BRIEF INTRODUCTION

It is believed that Earth’s climate has

considerably changed over time. Experts say that
this change in the planet started to happen during
the onset of industrial revolution. This leads to
climatic phenomena that occur on a global level.
These include global warming, greenhouse, El Niño,
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F
La Niña, and Tropical Cyclone. These phenomena %2Fclimate.nasa.gov%2Fresources%2Fglobal-warming-

do not just affect the planet but human beings and

every living thing on Earth as well. NOTE:
It is important to study and to learn these
This module was designed

LESSON 1: Climatic Phenomena on a Global Level

Climatic phenomena affect people, living creatures and the Earth. They may
also cause to increase Earth’s temperature and even bring extreme weather
conditions. We neeed to understand and to learn these phenomena to gain deeper
understanding of their effects and what else we can do to protect the Earth.

ACTIVITY TIME

Activity 1: CRYPTOGRAM: Deciphering Hidden Message

Objective: Identify the climatic phenomena that occur on a global scale

Think critically:
1. Solve the cryptogram to determine the different climatic phenomena that occur on
a global level.
2. You may use reference materials such related to earth and space to help you
accomplish the task.
3. Write your work in the ANSWER SHEET provided in this learning material.

Note: You are allowed to collaborate with someone at home that you think can help you
complete the cryptogram.

Directions: Below is a CRYPTOGRAM. Decipher the hidden message to find out the
climatic phenomena that occur on a global scale. You may also use the clues

. A greenhouse is also known as a glass-
house or hothouse where plants, flowers, and
vegetables are grown. Greenhouse warms up
during the day because of the penetration of sun’s
rays that provides heat to plants and vegetables
inside. This structure also ensures that crops are
shielded from excessive cold and extreme heat of
the sun because it is made up with glass walls and
a glass roof. This the reason why, greenhouse is a
suitable place for growing plants. This mechanism
is also similar to the Earth’s ability to trap heat https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/greenhouse/en/
from the sun. You will find out more why this greenhouse
is important to us by performing the next activity.

ACTIVITY TIME

Activity 2. Greenhouse
Objective: Describe Greenhouse
Materials: Reference materials such as books and internet sites

Think critically:
1. Two jars are shown below. The first jar has a cover while the second jar has no
cover. Both jars have thermometer to record their temperature. These two jars were
left outside on a sunny day.
2. The temperature of the two jars are recorded every 1 hour. Results are shown on
Table 1.
3. You may use reference materials such related Earth science to help you
accomplish the task.
3. Write your work in the ANSWER SHEET provided in this learning material.

Table 1. Recorded Temperature of Two Jars on a Sunny Day

Time Temperature in oC
(Hours) Jar 1 (with cover) Jar 2 (without cover)
1 30 28
2 33 30
3 36 32

Guide Questions

1. Which jar has a higher recorded temperature after

observing every hour?
https://
Which jar has lower temperature? www.earthsciweek.org/
2. What happened to the temperature in Jar 1? Jar 2? classroom-activities/your-
3. Why do you think there is a difference in the recorded own-greenhouse
Temperature for the two jars? What must have happened in the jar that’s why
it recorded higher temperature?
4. In this activity, the bottles serve as greenhouse. This simple model is similar
to the atmosphere’s ability to trap heat. Why is this ability to trap heat
important to us? (You may use other reference material to find out why!)

LESSON 3: Role of Increased Carbon Dioxide on Earth’s

Atmosphere

Carbon dioxide acts like a blanket on the Earth’s atmosphere. It absorbs

energy from sunlight that keeps the Earth warmer and radiates heat out into space.
This mechanism keeps the planet warm and ensures that living things are provided
with suitable and appropriate environment. For the next activity, you will further learn
what will happen if there is an increased level of Carbon dioxide in the Earth’s
atmosphere.

ACTIVITY TIME

Activity 3: Carbon Dioxide on Earth’s Atmosphere

Objective: Identify the relationship between increased emission of carbon dioxide
and greenhouse effect.
Directions: Below is a CRYPTOGRAM. Decipher the hidden message to find out the
effect of increased emission of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. You may
also use the clues provided

HIDDEN MESSAGE: _________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________

Guide Questions

1. What will happen if there is an increased carbon dioxide in the Earth’s

atmosphere?
2. Based on what you found out from the cryptogram, how will it affect people
and every living thing on Earth?

Note: You may ask the assistance of your parents or collaborate with any member of the
family to help you perform the procedure of the activity.

LESSON 4: Greenhouse Gases

Greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation which hold heat in the atmosphere.
They play an important role to keep the planet warm. However, increased level of
greenhouse gases caused too much heat in the atmosphere that contribute to
greenhouse effect and lead to global warming. Burning of fossil fuels, as one of the
sources of greenhouse gases, contribute greatly to Earth’s increase in temperature.
For the next activity, you will find out more of the greenhouse gases and their
sources. Common, lets continue learning!

ACTIVITY TIME

Activity 4: Greenhouse gases and their sources

Objective: Identify the different greenhouse gases and their sources.

Directions: Identify the greenhouse gases and their sources through the given word
search. Write your responses in the answer sheet provided.

Part I: GREENHOUSE GASES

Part II: SOURCES OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
LESSON 5: Greenhouse Effect, Global Warming, & Climate Change

Greenhouse effect is a process where

gases found in the Earth’s atmosphere trap
the sun’s heat. This process makes our planet
warmer which makes it a conducive place to
live in for all living things. However, too much
heat trapped in the Earth will result to global
warming. Global warming happens when the
Earth’s average temperature increased than
its normal level. This may be caused by
greenhouse effect which is a result of higher
level of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbon, what_is_climate_change_and_global_warming_and
and other pollutants.
This abnormal in the Earth’s temperature eventually leads to climate change.
Climate change is a global phenomenon characterized by an unusual change in the
climate of the planet, temperature, wind, and precipitation. This sudden and extreme
change in atmospheric condition of the planet may also affect the environment and
all living things.

ACTIVITY TIME

Activity 5: Finding Hidden Message

Objectives:
Differentiate Greenhouse Effect from Global Warming
Relate Global Warming and Climate Change
Directions:
Part I: LETTER TILES. Unscramble the tiles to reveal a message about
the given word. Write your answer in the blank boxes shown below.
A. Greenhouse Effect
B. Global Warming
Part II. FALLEN PHRASES. Letters are provided below. Your task is to
arrange these phrases to guess the meaning of climate change.

C. Climate Change

Guide Questions:
1. What do you mean by a greenhouse effect?
2. How is greenhouse effect related to global warming?
3. How is global warming related to climate change?

LESSON 6: El Niño and La Niña

El Niño is an abnormal change in a weather pattern in the Philippines caused

by the increase of the Pacific Ocean ‘s temperature that can affect air and sea
current causing a reduced rainfall in the area. While La Niña happens when there is
a decrease in the normal temperature of the Pacific Ocean which cools the area of
water near the equator causing extreme heavy rains in the Philippines. Let’s further
differentiate these two phenomena as you perform the next activity. Common, let’s
go!

ACTIVITY TIME
Activity 4: El Niño and La Niña

Objective: Differentiate El Niño from La Niña

Materials
Small, same sized cups (any material; e.g., ceramic, plastic, styrofoam)
Hand-held mirrors
Hot and cold water

Procedure
1. Get two cups with the same kind and size. Label these cups as Cup A and
Cup B.
2. Fill cup A with cold water, while cup B with hot water. Place these two cups on
a table.
3. Place each of your hands over one cup and feel the difference in the air
above the water.
Caution: (DO NOT TOUCH THE HOT WATER. Just feel the air).
4. Hold a small mirror over the cup of hot water for a few minutes. The moisture
in the air should collect on the mirror, and form tiny droplets once cooled.

PICTURE ANALYSIS

Guide Questions
1. What was formed when you place your hand over a cup filled with hot
water? How about in cold water?
2. How will you relate the activity performed on cup with hot water to El Niño?
3. Based on the picture, how will you differentiate El Niño from La Niña?
4. Can you tell the effects of El Niño and La Niña?

REMEMBER

Greenhouse refers to a building made up of transparent material such as

glass to shield crops from excess heat or cold.
Greenhouse Effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface
though gas particles that trap the heat in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and
water vapor.
Sources of greenhouse gases burning fossil fuels, transportation, industry
agriculture, residential, and commercial areas.
Global warming happens when the Earth’s average temperature increased
that its normal level because of greenhouse effect caused by a higher level
of carbon dioxide chlorofluorocarbon, and other pollutants.
Climate Change.
Climate change is a global phenomenon characterized by an unusual
change in the climate of the planet, temperature, wind, and precipitation.
El Niño is an abnormal change in a weather pattern in the Philippines
caused by the increase of the Pacific Ocean ‘s temperature that can affect
air and sea current causing a reduced rainfall in the area.
La Niña happens when there is a decrease in the normal temperature of the

Greenhouse Effect - A process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap
the Sun's heat. Greenhouse effect makes Earth warmer. The absorbed energy
warms the atmosphere and the planet.
Global warming - Increase in the temperature of Earth due to greenhouse gases
from burning fossil fuels
Climate Change - Change in the average conditions of the Earth due to gradual
warming of planet.
Guide Questions:
1. Greenhouse Effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface
through gas particles that trap the heat in the atmosphere.
2. Since greenhouse effect means a process where gas particles trap heat in the
Earth’s atmosphere, this is phenomenon is related to Global warming. If there
is too much heat trapped in the atmosphere, this leads to global warming
where there is an increased in the planet’s temperature.
3. A phenomenon when Earth becomes warmer that its usual temperature refers
to global warming. When this happens, climate change happens which may
manifest through the following conditions: extreme weather patterns, flood,
etc.).
ACTIVITY 6: EL NIÑO AND LA NIÑA
1. Moist was formed when the hand was placed over a cup filled with hot water
while no moist was formed in cold water.
2. Hot air will soon rise and will carry the moisture with it like what happens in
the Pacific Ocean which later on caused El Niño.
3. El Niño refers to warming of the ocean producing high air surface pressure in
the Pacific. It occurs when tropical there is no sufficient Pacific Ocean trade
winds and ocean temperatures become warm. La Niña happens when cooler
air than usual temperature occurs on the equator. It also occurs when the
trade winds blow unusually hard and the temperature becomes colder than
normal.
4. El Niño and La Niña affect people and living things since they bring extreme
weather conditions.
