The attached ARC Tech Aid No. 97 provides interim descriptive, adjustment
and parts information for the improved Converter Assembly A5, ARC P/N
47447-0000, used in MOD 3 and later R-1048B Navigation Receivers. Complete
information for the assembly will be included in a revised service/parts
manual.
The information in this Tech Aid should be retained for future reference
for servicing the R-1048B Receiver.
1. General Information
a. Beginning with serial number 4000 of the R-1048B Navigation Receiver, an improved
VOR/LOC Converter Assembly A5, ARC P/N 47447-0000, is used in the receiver. Re-
ceivers with this A5 assembly are identified as "MOD 3".
b. The original converter assembly A5 (ARC P/N 45938-0000) and the improved assembly
(ARC P/N 47447-0000) are physically and electrically interchangeable in the re-
ceiver. The improved assembly uses solid-state analog circuits to replace the
conventional transformer functions of the original assembly. (See Figure 1.) It
features a low-impedence output that does not require the inclusion of load com-
pensation resistors to satisfy any unused indicator load capability. Also, it
supplies output signals for operating the automatic radial centering (ARC) feature
of the IN-1048AC and IN-1049AC Course Indicators when one of these indicators is
included in the navigation system.
NOTE
For "ARC" operation, the R-1048B must include the MOD 4 change as follows:
c. Except for layout, some component values, and reference designation assignments,
the circuits of the improved A5 assembly are similar to those used in the B-445
Converter and described in the 300, 400, 1000 Series Course Indicators, Types
IN-38( )( ), IN-48( )( ), IN-104( )( ) and 400 Series Converter Type B-445A Ser-
vice/Parts Manual. Reference to this manual will be helpful for servicing the
converter until the next revision of the R-1048( ) Service/Parts Manual is avail-
able.
2. Parts Information
A parts location diagram and parts description for the component parts of Converter
Assembly A5, ARC P/N 47447-0000, are presented in Figure 2 of this bulletin.
3. Adjustment Information
Refer to the B-445 Converter Service/Parts Manual for suggested test equipment and
test connections, and compare with the connector functions shown on Figure 1 of
this bulletin. The following controls are included for adjusting the VOR and local-
izer circuits of the improved converter assembly:
VOR Localizer
Step 1. Apply a standard VOR input signal with 75° TO course, and set
test OBS to 75°.
Step 2. Remove the 30 Hz component of the VOR input signal and adjust
A5R40 for a vertical deflection indication of 0 ± 0.5 mV be-
tween A501-5 and A501-30.
Step 3. Replace the 30 Hz component of the signal and adjust A5R36 for
a vertical deflection indication of 0 ± 0.5 mV between A5J1-5
and A5J1-30.
Step 7. Apply a standard VOR input signal with 345° TO course, and set
test OBS to 345°.
Step 10. Apply a standard VOR input signal with 355° TO course, and set
test OBS to 345°.
Step 12. Apply a standard VOR signal with 0° TO course and set the test
OBS to 0°. TO/FROM indicator should show "FROM".
Step 13. Set the test OBS to 90° ; the TO/FROM indicator should switch to
a "TO" course.
TECH AID NO. 97 Page 3
Step 14. Apply a standard VOR signal with 75° FROM course, and set
the test OBS to 75°.
Step 15. Switch navigation signal between a TO and FROM course and
adjust A5R115 for a vertical deflection indication of
0 ± 0.5 mV between A5J1-12 and A5J1-14.
Step 1. Set the test OBS to 345° ; apply a 355° TO course input signal.
Step 3. Adjust A5R87 for flag current indication of greater than 235 uA
(flag just showing).
Step 1. Apply a standard VOR input signal with 0° TO course; set the
test OBS to 0°, and connect A5J1-29 to ground.
Step 2. Select both TO and FROM courses at 30° increments, and check that
the centering error does not exceed ± 15 mV (1°) between A5J1-12
and A5J1-14.
Step 3. Apply a standard VOR input signal with 10° course, and set the
test OBS to 0°. Indication between A5J1-12 and A5J1-14 should be
150 ± 15 mV.
NOTE
Step 4. Check that the flag current indication is less than 230 uA be-
tween A5J1-25 and A5J1-33.
Step 6. Check for +27.5 ± 0.2Vdc at A5J1-6, and check that flag current
is greater than 235 uA.

its equipment without obligation to incorporate such changes in previously
delivered equipment.
