Determination of Setting Time of Hydraulic Cement: Reference Standard ASTM C 191-42 AASHTO T 131-93
Determination of Setting Time of Hydraulic Cement: Reference Standard ASTM C 191-42 AASHTO T 131-93
Objectives:
1. To determine time of set of hydraulic cement using Vicat Apparatus
2. To evaluate the setting of the tested Portland cement based on the required
initial setting time.

1. Are there differences in the standard setting time of the various types of Portland cement?
Why or Why not?
The type of cement used in concrete has a direct impact on its strength, durability,
shrinkage, and life. There are many different types of cement on the market. Ordinary
Portland cement, Portland pozzolana cement, hydrophobic cement, coloured cement, high
alumina cement, quick hardening cement, and so on are only a few examples. All of these
varieties are employed in accordance with our requirements. They're all different depending
on what they're used for.
2. Relate cement fineness to its time of setting and the development of its strength.
The fineness of the cement is determined by the particle size. The needed fineness
of excellent cement is attained in the final phase of the cement manufacturing process by
grinding the clinker. Cement fineness is critical because cement hydration rate is directly
proportional to cement particle size.
Thus, the time setting will help the cement to develop its strength through that is
why there was an initial time where the cement it started to lose it flexibility and it will
reach its final composition as hard, this give enough strength to be compactly durable.
