TOPIC 2 - BASIC ALGEBRA

1. 2016 SPECIMEN P1
Simplify 5(2a - 3b) – (6a – 2)

Step 1 - Start with the brackets and multiply 5

5 (2a - 3b) – (6a – 2) with (2a - 3b) and (-) with (6a - 2).
= 10a - 15b - 6a + 2 Step 2 - Group the like terms.

= 10a - 6a - 15b + 2 Step 3 - Subtract 6a from 10a.

= 4a - 15b + 2

2. 2017 P1
Simplify 3x - (y - 2x) - 3y
Step 1 - Start with the brackets and multiply
3x - ( y - 2x) - 3y (-) with (y - 2x).
= 3x - y + 2x - 3y Step 2 - Group the like terms .

= 3x + 2x - y - 3y Step 3 - Add 3x and 2x and subtract -3y from -y.

= 5x - 4y

3. 2017 G.C.E P1
Simplify 2a - 7b - 2(a - 3b)
Step 1 - Start with the brackets and multiply
2a - 7b -2 (a - 3b) (-2) with (a - 3b).
= 2a - 7b -2a + 6b Step 2 - Group the like terms .

= 2a - 2a - 7b + 6b Step 3 - Subtract 2a from 2a and add 6b to -7b.

= 0 - 1b
= -b NOTE: -1b = -b

= 50°.
(ii) Measure and write the length of PR.

(b) On your diagram, within triangle PQR, construct the locus of points
which are
(i) equidistant from P and Q
(ii) equidistan t from PR and PQ
(iii) 5cm from R

(c) A point T within triangle PQR is such that it is 5cm from R and
equidistant from P and Q. Label point T.

(d) Another point X is such that it is less than or equal to 5cm from R,
nearer to Q than P and nearer to PQ than PR. Indicate by shading,
the region in which X must lie.
