Solid Block Size Chart [4, 6, 8 inch block size] - Buildpro Store
By : Shankara Buildpro Aug 06, 2022

Solid blocks, sometimes referred to as Concrete Masonry Units (CMUs), offer extremely dependable non-structural partitions. They are used in more practical
locations like mechanical rooms or basements as a backup wall that is covered with a finish material or left bare.

They can be painted to give a cleaner surface, but they are also made with various finishes that enhance the conventional grey CMU's visual appeal.

In this article you will find the solid block size chart, their average price & different types of solid concrete block shapes.

How is the size of solid block calculated?

CMUs have actual dimensions, just like a brick. The real dimension of a CMU is multiplied by the width of the mortar joint to determine its nominal dimension.
3/8 mortar joints are typical for CMU ". The nominal size fits inside the 4 "that other building materials adhere.

Solid Block Sizes

A range of sizes are produced for concrete masonry units. They can be recognised by their depth or the height of the wall they build. In contrast to a 10" CMU,
which is nominally 10" deep, a 6-inch solid block size is 6" deep.

Additionally, concrete blocks are available in half-sizes, which lessens the requirement to cut blocks on-site at corners or wall ends. To minimise waste and
labour caused by cut blocks, the architect should always try to design buildings utilising nominal dimensions to the nearest half-block size.

The actual dimensions of solid block sizes are shown in the following table. While the common sizes are 4", 6", 8", 10", and 12", an 8-inch solid block size and 4
inch solid block size is the most common one.

Solid Concrete Block Masonry Unit Specifications

When creating a solid concrete block, CMU producers must adhere to ASTM requirements:

1. According to the specifications, suitable materials, compressive strength, dimensional tolerance, moisture absorption, and other
performance parameters are identified.

2. Concrete brick is constructed in sizes that are similar to typical clay bricks (i.e., 2 2/3" tall), however, unlike concrete block, concrete
brick is formed from the same material.

3. The density of the concrete mix used affects the weight of concrete masonry units. There are three different categories for CMU.

There are three weight categories:

1. Light (less than 105 lb/ft3)

2. Medium (between 105 lb/ft3 and 125 lb/ft)

3. Heavy (above 125 lb/ft3)

4. Less expensive, easier to install, and typically with greater fire resistant characteristics are lighter CMUs. Although heavier units tend to
be more expensive and more expensive to install, they also tend to have lower sound transmission, substantially higher compressive
strengths, and larger thermal storage capacity.

5. In cases where a specific weight is necessary, architects must define the CMU weight.

Solid Concrete Block Shapes

There are practically countless CMU shapes possible. The most typical shapes are shown in the photos here, but if unusual shapes or finishes are required, one
should check with the local CMU maker.

CMU Surface Finishes

Like, shapes, there are many finish options available to transform the plain grey concrete block into something much more aesthetically beautiful. Make sure to
speak with the CMU representative in the area to find out what kinds of finishes they provide and at what premium price.

Coloured CMU

Both the mortar and the concrete block can be coloured using pigments. This enables the block and mortar to contrast sharply or melt together. Even if the
CMUs originate from the same manufacturing batch, there will be some natural variance in their colour. The architect must examine at least three sample
blocks that show the anticipated colour variance.

One option is to paint the block and mortar if the colour must be precise or constant. Although outside surfaces can also be painted, interior painting is more
common. Make careful to choose the appropriate paint for the application by consulting with the CMU manufacturer and paint supplier.

Raked CMU

Vertical rake marks are introduced during the moulding process for raked (or "striated") pieces. The rake markings don't lend as much depth to the block as the
scored or ribbed blocks mentioned above in the Shapes section, but they do give it a nice texture. Additionally, it is possible to specify that blocks with scores or
ribs have a raked pattern applied for added texture.

Split-Faced CMU

To create a split-faced CMU, two units are moulded side by side, fired together, and then mechanically split apart. Since the block's fragments are also split or
exposed, this results in an extremely rough texture that some people mistake for stone. To give even more texture, ribbed or scored units can optionally have a
split-faced finish.

Sandblasted CMU

Concrete masonry units can be sandblasted to reveal the aggregate and to add a rougher appearance by blasting some of the sand and cement away. Some
individuals think this produces a naturally worn appearance as opposed to the smoother appearance of burnished or polished CMU.

Soft-Split CMU

Instead of breaking the blocks manually, Soft-Split CMU is manufactured using special moulds that produce a split-faced look. A little less harsh than split-
faced, the effect. Mould also prevents particles from being revealed.

Glazed CMU

A coating comprised of resin gives glazed CMU its tile-like glazed surface. Numerous colours and faux material designs are available in the coating. These
surfaces might provide better chemical and graffiti resistance. The ASTM C90 standard for load-bearing CMU still needs to be followed by the blocks even
though ASTM C744 covers glazed CMU.

Polished CMU

Concrete blocks can be burnished or polished to reveal the natural aggregates in the concrete mix, which is also known as Ground Face CMU. To ensure they
achieve the desired aesthetic, it's crucial to collaborate with the manufacturer to choose an appealing material and test the polishing procedure.

Conclusion:

As so many different aesthetics can be created with concrete masonry units, it is one of the most adaptable building materials on the market. To achieve a
variety of finishes and applications, concrete masonry units are produced in a variety of sizes, forms, colours, and textures.

Additionally, due to its modular design, different concrete masonry modules can be mixed to create varied textures, patterns, and colours within the same wall.

Different sizes and shapes of concrete masonry are considered conventional, whereas some are only common in particular areas. Local producers can offer
comprehensive details on certain products or the viability of building custom units.
