Topic: Word classes & Form and Function
1. In here, we’ll practice identifying what we traditionally call parts of speech, but often
referred to as word and lexeme categories.

i. Noun The dog barked. That’s Mary. We saw you.


ii. Verb The dog barked. It’s impossible. I have a headache.
iii. Adjective He’s very old. It looks empty. I have a new car.
iv. Determinative The dog barked. I need some water. All things change.
v. Adverb She spoke clearly. He’s very old. I almost died.

2. Identify the parts of speech in these longer passages.

v. Hold tightly to what is good.


Subject and predicate
Nouns function as subject, direct object, or predicative complement (see linking or copula
verbs) as in the following examples.
i. The old lady lived alone. My aunt visited the old lady.
ii. The new changes caused great losses. Great losses were caused by the new changes.
iii. That letter was beautifully written. Joseph wrote that letter.

3. Divide the main clauses of the following examples into subject and predicate. Underline
the subject and circle the predicate. For example: This is the house that I built.

i. I think it’s interesting.


ii. The guy in that house over there works for the university.
iii. Most of the mistakes he mad were very minor.
iv. The thing that puzzles me is why no one called the police.
v. One of her daughters, the oldest one in fact, is training to be an English teacher.
4. Write your own sentences imitating the patterns of the exercise above.

5. Complete the following statements using the part of speech in parenthesis.


i. The evenings have turned (adjective) cold recently.
ii. The evenings have turned cold (adverb) recently.
iii. The evenings have turned cold recently but…
iv. The evenings have turned cold since…
6. Identify the main clauses in the following scriptural passage. See the relationship
between punctuation and grammar.
For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living
waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

7. Unscramble the words to create meaningful sentences.
