Discussion of the Field of Astronomy

Astronomy is the oldest science, with the first observations of the heavens conducted by our early
human ancestors. Historical records of astronomical measurements date back as far as Mesopotamia
nearly 5000 years ago, with later observations made by the ancient Chinese, Babylonians, and
Greeks. Humans seek to explain their world with (internal) models; one of the earliest is that the
affairs of humans and the world are controlled by the positions of the stars and planets.
Although astrology now regarded as a pseudoscience, it was the original motivation for the mapping
of the stars and the assignment of constellation.

Astronomy is more than simply a mapping of stars and planets into outlines of gods and magical
creatures. It is the scientific study of the contents of entire Universe: stars, planets, comets,
asteroids, galaxies, and space and time as well as its history. Astronomy is a science that seeks to
explain everything that we observe in the Universe, from the comets and planets in our own solar
system to distant galaxies to the echoes of the Big Bang. Astronomy is a study that aims to explain
everything that we witness in the Universe, from the comets and planets in our own solar system to
distant galaxies to the echoes of the Great Bang.

The study of astronomy includes everything in the universe besides our planet's atmosphere. It
includes celestial bodies like the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars that we can see with our unaided
eyes. It also includes things like far-off galaxies and small particles that we can only glimpse through
telescopes or other tools. The legacy of astronomy can be seen in a number of technological
advancements, including computers, satellites and the smartphones they support, the Global
Positioning System (GPS), energy-efficient solar panels, digital camera sensors, airport security
scanners, portable X-ray machines, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners.
