1.A collar that can slide on a
vertical rod is subjected to the
three forces shown in fig.
a) the value of the angle  for
which the resultant of the three
forces is horizontal
b) the corresponding magnitude
of the resultant. 
2. A body weighing 2000 N is
suspended with a chain AB 2 m
long. It is pulled by a horizontal
force of 320 N as shown in Fig.
Find the force in the chain and
the lateral displacement (i.e., x)
of the body.

fig and a couple 'M' are applied
to an angle bracket. Determine
the moment of the couple 'M' if
the line of action of the resultant

through point B.

each of 3 m length freely
supported at its end points. The
girder is loaded at B and C as
shown. Find the forces in all the
members of the girder,

loaded as shown in Fig. Find the
reactions at A and D.

13. A block (A) weighing 1kN


rests on a rough inclined plane
whose inclination to the
horizontal is 45°. This block is
connected to another block (B)
weighing 3 kN rests on a rough
horizontal plane by a weightless
rigid bar inclined at an angle of
30° to the horizontal as shown in
Fig. Find horizontal force (P)
required to be applied to the
block (B) just to move the block
(A) in upward direction. Assume
angle of limiting friction as 15° at
all surface where there is sliding.
14. Determine the minimum
force P required to overcome to
overcome static friction and
begin to lift 100 N block ‘A’
shown in fig. The weight of 200
wedge ‘B’ is 5 N and the
coefficient of static friction
between all surfaces is 0.4.

12kmph due north. Determine the velocity of B with respect to A and also the shortest
distance between the two ships
26. A driver of an automobile starts from rest and increases his speed uniformly to
72kmph in 10 seconds on a curved road of radius 500m. Determine the magnitude of
total acceleration 6 seconds after start
27.The acceleration of a rocket travelling upward is given by ; a= 6+ 0.02s m/s2,
where s is in meters. Determine the rocket velocity when s=2km and the time
required to reach this altitude. Assume initial velocity, distance and time as 0.
27 A train starts from station with an acceleration of 1m/sec2. A boy is 48 m behind
the train runs with a constant velocity of 10 m/sec. What is the minimum time after
which the boy will catch the train.
28.A car starts from rest on a circular curve of 250 m radius and accelerate at a
constant tangential acceleration 1.2 m/sec2. Determine distance travelled and time
taken when magnitude of total acceleration of car becomes 1.5 m/sec2.
29. The velocity of a particle moving in a straight line is given by the expression V=
t3 - t2 – 2t +2 . The particle is found to be at a distance 4 m from station A after 2
seconds. Determine: the acceleration & displacement after 4 seconds and maximum
or minimum acceleration

31.The acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion varies linearly from 2m/s2 to

particle at x=40mm is 0.4m/s. Determine velocity at x=120mm. Find the value of x

63 km/h over a distance of 200 m along a curve of 500 m radius. Determine the
magnitude of the total acceleration of the automobile after it has travelled 100 m
along the curve
35.A small block of mass 100 gm is kept on a rotating disc at radial distance 15 mm
from centre of rotation. If co-efficient of friction between the block and surface of
disc is 0.2, find out the rotational speed at which the block will slide.

in the same direction. Determine their common velocity after coupling. What is
amount of energy lost.
41. An automobile weighing 20 kN is driven down a 5° incline at a speed of 60 kmph
when the brakes are applied causing a constant total braking force of 7.5 kN. What is
the distance travelled by the automobile as it comes to a stop.
42.A bullet moving with a velocity of 165 m/sec penetrates through a plank. The
bullet has a velocity of 143 m/sec, the movement it comes out of the plank. Find the
number of planks through which it can penetrate before it comes to rest.
43. A 50 kg box is pushed to slide along a horizontal floor with an initial speed of
4 m/s. If µs = 0.3, find distance travelled by the box before coming to rest.
44.A 2 kg stone is dropped form a height h and strike the ground with a velocity of
24 m/sec. Using work energy principle find the kinetics energy of the stone as it
strikes the ground and the height (h) from which it was dropped.
45. If 20 Joule work is done in compressing spring from 60 to 0 mm, then how much
work is done in compressing the same from 30 to 60 mm.

47. Two swimmers A and B of mass 75kg and 50kg respectively dive off the end of a
200kg boat. Each swimmer has a relative horizontal velocity of 3m/s when leaving the
boat. If the boat is initially at rest, find its velocity assuming that both swimmers dive
simultaneously.
