1 Overview
The information in this manual is provided to aid the user in the installation, operation, and
maintenance of the STATYS UL Static Transfer Switch (STS) manufactured by Powersmiths
(Socomec Group). Please read, understand and follow the procedures given to ensure trouble-free
installation and operation.
Note: For specific Installation Instructions please refer to the Installation Manual shipped with
each unit. Additional documents and setup software are available on request.

1.1 Equipment Description

The function of the STATYS UL STS is to provide reliable source of power to the load by selecting
between two independent sources. Typical applications include, but not limited to, IT
infrastructures, telecom, medical and diverse industrial applications. Under normal operation, the
STS connects the load at the output to the “Preferred” source and switches to the alternate source
if anomalies in its power quality (operating parameters outside set limits) are detected, provided
that the alternate source is within acceptable parameters. The controls in the STS monitor the input
sources and the output, to ensure that the outputs are operating within set of parameters.
STATYS UL has been designed with multiple levels of redundancy for the highest level of
reliability. Some of its other salient features includes:
• Front Only Access requirement for operation, installation and maintenance
• Maintenance Bypass equipped with Kirk-key interlock and HMI Guided instructions
• Redundancy on critical components including fans, controls, power supplies and SCR
drivers
• Fan replacement without power down
• Safe Maintainability aids
• Effective Preventative Maintenance through integrated IR View Ports and Grills
• Extensive modularization that facilitates quick MTTR (Mean Time to Repair)
• Cold tap power stage change-out without load interruption
• Optional dual output switches
• Pluggable switches for easy safe replacement

STATYS UL is available in different configurations for specific electrical system type, selected at
time of order by the engineer of record. The available model configurations are listed in the table
below with reference to the specific system type and rating.

The type of system for a particular distribution configuration impacts the internal structure and the
choice of the type of STS to be used. The entire STS range differs not just in terms of rating, but
also in terms of different number of switched poles which characterize the unit.
For the specific as shipped unit configuration please refer to the nameplate and documentation
package (Test Certificate, Installation Manual, Outline Drawing, Schematic) included with each
unit or contact Powersmiths International Corp. for support with reference to the nameplate serial
number. Units may be additionally supplied with configurations and options as defined by
customer at time of order.

2 Theory of Operation
The STATYS UL STS is a solid state, 3-pole or 4-pole (model dependent), double throw switch,
which connects the output to one of the two input sources. Under normal conditions, the unit
supplies the load from the preferred source. The user can select which is the preferred source via
the touchscreen LCD panel. The other source is referred to as the alternate source and powers the
load if the preferred source fails or if a manual transfer is activated. The topology of the switch is
shown in the single line diagram below with Kirk-keys, shunt-trip coils and auxiliary contacts.

S1 Input and S2 Inputs, Output A and Output B and S1 Bypass and S2 Bypass are 100% rated
(600Arms) molded case switches connected via pluggable bases for easy and quick service. The
molded case switches do not provide overcurrent protection but will operate for short-circuits.
Overcurrent protection is required to be provided by external means using Breakers or Fuses rated
for the unit rating. In normal operation, all the Input and Output switches are closed and the Bypass
Switches are only closed under specific procedures for maintenance Bypass operation. The transfer

STATYS UL MANUAL 13 228-005650-800 Rev: X00

procedure for manual Bypass is controlled by Kirk-key interlock to help assure a safe no-break
transfer to bypass and described in detail in section 7.2.
The transfer switch mechanism comprises Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) connected in anti-
parallel, to function as a bi-directional AC switch. For 3-phase 3-pole switching, three pairs of
SCRs are connected to each phase of both sources for a total of 6 switches. The switches are
turned on by the controls to select the appropriate source based on the selection of the preferred
source and prevailing power quality. The switching action is at sub-cycle speed and provides
essentially no-break transfer between the sources. For applications where the two sources are
independently grounded, such as with backup generators, a 4-pole neutral switch is used to also
switch the neutral where all conductors are switched. It is generally necessary to switch the Neutral
conductor where the two sources are independently grounded, such as with generator sets, to avoid
ground currents flowing between the sources.
Under normal operation, power is provided to the load through the appropriate source SCR being
turned on allowing power to flow from the input to the output to the load. When an anomaly is
detected in the output that falls outside set parameters, the alternate SCR on the other source is
gated on and the prior source SCR is switched off, transferring the load power to the other source
following the same power flow (Input Switch through Output).
The controls in the STS continuously monitor the status of the SCR switching devices for opens
or shorts for uninterrupted operation. In the unlikely event of an SCR short, the unit will generate
an alarm and isolate the other source by shunt tripping its input switch which prevents back-feed
(inadvertent connection between two sources) thus inhibiting any transfer operation. This prevents
the sources from being connected together under this fault condition. For failed open SCRs, the
system provides an alarm and transfers the load to the alternate source. Also, the status of all
switches is monitored via integrated auxiliaries which allows for greater system integrity.

2.1 Modes of Operation

When the output power quality falls outside acceptable power quality limits such as voltage or
frequency limits of the set parameters, the STS transfers the output to the alternate source (if it is
in acceptable limits) and returns to the preferred source when its parameters return to normal
conditions with an appropriate time delay as set/programmed.
The parameters that define the quality thresholds of the sources and operational characteristics are
adjusted using the Socomec ExpertSoft software suite (contact Powersmiths for support).
For a totally secure transfer between sources, the parameters must be within acceptable limits, or
transfer cannot take place. The unit continuously monitors the alternate source. If the alternate
source is unavailable (or if the voltage exceeds the preset tolerances), the transfer function is
inhibited. An alarm is triggered to warn the operator that the transfer is not permissible.

STATYS UL MANUAL 14 228-005650-800 Rev: X00

The transfer function is also inhibited, in case of a short circuit or overcurrent at the output of the
supplied equipment. This prevents the short circuit from being propagated to the alternate circuits
and thus protects the other source and the SCRs from a cascading potential fault.
There are three types of automatic transfer that could occur, namely synchronous, asynchronous
and sliding, which is initiated according to the relationship of the sources (phase/frequency) and
the user set configuration.
Synchronous Transfer
Synchronous transfer occurs automatically when the parameters of the two sources are
synchronized and are within acceptable tolerance limits i.e. when their phase deviation is within
tolerance window.
If the phase deviation exceeds this tolerance window, synchronous transfer is inhibited and
automatic changeover to the alternate source will not be possible unless the system is configured
for synchronous/ asynchronous transfer.
Note: STATYS UL is configured for synchronous/ asynchronous transfer by default.
STATYS UL may be configured to ‘synchronous only’ transfer for applications where the loads
are sensitive to phase shifts.
Asynchronous Transfer
Automatic asynchronous transfer occurs only if it is set as a permissible parameter (standard
factory configuration) and if both the sources are not synchronized i.e. their phase deviation
exceeds the tolerance window. Switching the source in this case may produce a significant phase
variation during the changeover.
Note: When STATYS UL is configured for synchronous/ asynchronous transfer, the out-of-
tolerance alarm is NOT active.
Sliding Transfer
If the sources are sliding, automatic transfer occurs when the parameters of both sources are within
the user set synchronization window or can be forcefully transferred to the other source manually.

The user is able to force the transfer of the load from one source to another by selection of this
operation on the HMI. Manual transfer does not disturb the output to the load.
If the synchronization conditions are not met after 30 seconds (factory default setting), an
asynchronous transfer occurs, if authorized, otherwise the request is cancelled.
If the transfer cannot take place (for example, 2nd source out of tolerance), the following message
appears: “Transfer Impossible”
Note: Alarms will turn off automatically when normal conditions are restored.

STATYS UL MANUAL 15 228-005650-800 Rev: X00

The STATYS UL includes a Bypass circuit which allows for safe maintenance of the units. In this
mode, the operator manually transfers the output to the selected source and isolates active the
power train of the unit. Bypass procedures are described in detail later in this manual.

When both the sources are unavailable due to out of tolerance parameters and STATYS UL is in
the ready conduction state, an automatic restart and conduction occurs on the return to one of the
two sources which ever returns to normal operating parameters first.
The supply is retransferred automatically onto preferred source as soon as this source becomes
available. The automatic restart function can be configured and is set OFF by default.

STATYS UL overload is based on a current/time algorithm. When STATYS UL is in overload

condition, an ‘OVERLOAD ALARM’ message appears and the ‘GENERAL ALARM’ is
triggered. Also, an over temperature alarm is triggered if the overload is maintained causing the
SCR heatsink to exceed set temperature limits.

2.2 EPO (Emergency Power OFF)

An Emergency Power Off (EPO) pushbutton is provided so that the unit may be manually
shutdown in an emergency by an operator. Depressing the EPO Button will shunt trip the input
switches for both sources and the output switches simultaneously. This function is also available
via remote input contacts.

precautions are required for temperature extremes in the range of – 20 OC to + 70 OC but it should
be protected from rapid temperature changes to avoid moisture condensation.

STATYS UL MANUAL 38 228-005650-800 Rev: X00

6.2 Handling and Moving
STATYS UL is normally shipped using Powersmiths “Easy Skid” which is designed to minimize
shipping materials, maximize shipping efficiency and facilitate easier handling and safer
installation. It is also equipped with attachment features to facilitate the use of lifting eyes for
overhead crane handling. Contact Powersmiths for support to use this feature.
CAUTION The unit is heavy and tall, making it necessary to handle with care; it should be moved
slowly to avoid tipping with the support of two additional persons on either side of the
! unit for safely guiding the unit into place
Lift only by a forklift or pallet truck from the bottom of the STS case (see “Caution”
above) or by overhead crane using externally fitted lifting Eyes
To avoid tipping or damage, ensure that the forks are centered and extend beyond the
rear of the unit.
Lifting Eyes: Lifting Eyes, when used, are screwed into the vertical supports on each
corner structural member. Spreaders are to be used to prevent any sheer stress which
will dramatically reduce the lifting strength. The Eye bolts are to be M12 threads and
rated for 2250 lbs. (1000 kgs), vertical stress only and are only supplied per request;
contact Powersmiths for support in this.

• Forklift or Pallet truck handling: Prior to lifting, ensure that the forks are centered and
penetrate to the rear of the unit to avoid damage and tipping. Slowly lift and move the
unit into the prepared position.

f

8 System Maintenance
DANGER Static switch maintenance should be performed only by a trained and
qualified service personnel.
Lethal voltages exist inside the unit during normal operation.
The unit is supplied by multiple AC power sources. Disconnect and lock-
out all power sources before working inside the unit.

STS, like any other piece of equipment, will require periodic attention and maintenance in order
to ensure trouble-free service. The system should be regularly inspected for electrical connection
integrity, signs of excessive temperatures, dirt accumulation and proper system operation.
Attention should be paid to any alerts for preventive maintenance that the unit may automatically
display with alarm or warning.

8.1 Tightening torques

The recommended tightening torque for all nuts and bolts is as shown in tablesTable 8.1 &Table
8.2. All power connections are designed to remain at proper torque throughout the lifetime of the
unit.

8.3 Infrared (IR) Inspection View Ports
IR Ports are provided for thermographic imaging of input and output terminals and all molded case
switches, without the need to shut down the equipment. This feature facilitates early detection and
preventive maintenance to repair defective connections that could deteriorate due to excessive
heat. The IR Ports facilitate safe, non-invasive IR imaging by providing inspectors with a
comprehensive view of all critical power connections. This feature is designed to eliminate the
risk of operator induced triggers causing electric shock and arc flash hazards associated with
traditional IR inspections which require the removal of a panel or opening of a cover or door.
The IR View Ports are accessed by opening the covers over each port. See illustration below for
the location of all the ports:
Note: Update figure
IR View Ports

Fig 8.1 Location of IR View Ports

8.4 Fans
Fans are used to force cool the SCR power and this function is provided by a pair of fans which
operate redundant to each other and the failures of either fan is alarmed. The life of the fans used
to cool the power parts is dependent on the usage and environmental conditions but with an
excepted lifetime of about 5 years. However, preventive replacement of fans is recommended
within 4 years (normal operating conditions) and it can be done without power down of the
equipment.
