Assignment title: Language-related tasks

Assignment number: 2

Number of words: ___________________

Submitted on (date): ______________________________

This assignment is my original work and I have acknowledged all sources.

Full name:

To be completed by CELTA tutor (John Fowler)

Overall grade: Resubmission

General comments:

Armando, there are a lot of inaccuracies and missing information. Too many to be able to pass the
assignment at the moment. Please read the comments carefully and fix them all.

First of all, you only analyzed one lexical item. You need to analyze two. 2 x grammar & 2 x lexis.

Pay special attention to all areas for greater accuracy and more complete answers, especially CCQs,
phonology, and stating correct form. Include anticipated problems and solutions for MFP for all 4
items.

Finally, make sure you fill out the first page with the relevant information.

*Please resubmit by Monday 22nd August latest.

Language Assignment Analysis

The use of language is growing in the world of academics. Using language in a

correct context and proper manner boosts a student. Therefore, with different learning

materials available, learners must understand various components of the English language

and how to use it correctly. Being one of the most difficult subjects, a teacher must offer

guidance to ensure that the students are not confused. Therefore, the paper offers an analysis

of grammar and an understanding of major challenges that may occur during its use.

Part 1

Grammar Example

Everything that has happened to us during the day

Meaning of the sentence

The verb tense is used to indicate the action or state in which action had been performed

before the present.

It can also mean that the action has extended to or has the results continuing to the present.

CCQs:

What occurs to every person's failure to take medicine? Die

What time did it take place? During the day

Form

It is the auxiliary verb ( have or has+ past participle of the main verb).

Everything that has happened to us during the day

The sentence structure and arrangement are in the present perfect tense.

In contractions: Have

Has-'s

Pronunciation
4

• • •

…everything that has happened to us during the day.

Appropriacy

The form is neutral; therefore, it can be utilized to draft essays contrary to the contractions.

Also, it can form part of our daily communication, information communication in emails, and

chats because it permits contractions. This form can be used in businesses, offices, and

conferences

Problems likely to happen and their solutions

Problem

The learner must use an extra syllable when pronouncing the verb "happen" in the past

participle tense. It is more common among Brazilians who struggle to separate past regular

verbs' three sets of pronunciations.

Solution

The best solution is revising and mastering the past of the verbs. That way, it becomes easy to

differentiate and use them correctly.

/Id/ /d/ /t/

Problem

Most of the learners find it hard to differentiate the present perfect from the simple past tense

hence leading to confusion

Solution

The learner must draft a timeline indicating the differences between the two tenses, their

meaning, and how they are used in sentences (Rauhun et al., 2022).

Part 2

Example of lexis

We can put off sleeping for a limited time

Meaning of the sentence

The sentences mean to decide or organize an event or activity at later times or dates.

It is an act of postponing the performance of an act dates or times.

CCQs

When we plan to do something later, do we do it now? No

At what time do we do it? Later

Can we prevent sleeping forever? No

Examples of such situations

Individuals can decide to put off plans, activities, and appointments

For instance, the conference has been put off for a month

Do not put off activity until tomorrow, which can be done today.

Form

Put: verb Off adverb Put off: phrasal verb (it can be separated)

An object must follow the use of put-off. Put off something. It can function separately;

however, the object must be converted to a pronoun, which is put something/pronoun off.

For example, we can put it sleeping for a limited time (object)

Pronoun: we can put it off for a limited time.

Pronunciation

Put off is pronounced as /pʊt ɒf/

Problems likely to occur during the use of the sentence

Problem 1
6

As a teacher, you may give the student an example using the phrase put off in various

sentences and require them to substitute it with one meaning such as dislike, discourage or

postpone (Kranjec, 2020). In this case, the learners are likely to be confused about using

transitive and intransitive phrasal verbs.

Solution

As a teacher, make the student understand that transitive phrasal verbs can be separated;

therefore, the object must be placed between the verb and the preposition in a situation of the

pronoun

For example, it is correct to say "put it off" instead of "put off it"

Also, give the student several sentence structures with the phrase and ask them to identify the

right and wrong ones (Rauhun et al., 2022).

For example

 they put off sleeping

 they put off it

 they put it off

Conclusively, Language analysis is one of the most critical parts of English study. It

not only helps the student to be fluent in their communication but also to know the context in

which they are supposed to use a given verb or phrase and which tenses to use in different

scenarios. Many mistakes the student makes arise when they are not guided on how to

differentiate the context of using a specific phrase and verbs; hence it leads to mixed up.

Therefore, learning a language must start early enough to ensure proper usage of English.
7

Be used to: Means be familiar with or be accustomed to.

CCQ:

If you are used to something it means that it was strange to you at first?

Does it still feels strange to you now?

Form

subject + main verb + used to + object

be/get

If it involves a verb we use -ing form

Pronunciation

biː juːzd tuː

Problem

Students may confuse be used to with the special structure used to do.

Solution:

Show examples of both next to each other.

Show the definitions next to each other.

Problem
They might have difficulties differencing get used to and be used to.

Solution:
I could ask them if you say I am used to if you were talking about your habit of using the
phone.
8

Get used to: Indicates that something is becoming familiar.

CCQ:

If you are getting used to something does it mean that you are used to it or that you will be

used to it in the future?

If you are getting used to something, are you already familiar with something?

subject + main verb + used to + object

be/get

If it involves a verb we use -ing form

Pronunciation

gɛt juːzd tuː

Problem

They may thing that get used to means that they are already used to something.

Solution:

Clarify that you say get used to when you are still not used to something, but in the process

of getting used to it.

Show examples of phrases using be used to and get used to.
