Professor Bridges
Spring 2023
I am choosing this profession because I enjoy working with young children. I have always loved
being with children. They are so innocent and pure, and they take such a huge interest in
learning. I get so excited knowing that one day I will be one of the adults that makes a difference
in these children’s lives. I have a child of my own and she is always so curious and wants to
learn about everything. So naturally as her mother, I teach her how things work, and it is so
much fun to see her understand what I’m teaching her. The experience that has inspired me to get
into this profession is when I went to school as a child. I always wanted to be the teacher’s helper
in class. It was always fun for me. For as long as I can remember, I have thought being a teacher
would be so fun, even though it comes with its challenges. My personal knowledge and skill set
that will help prepare me for this career field is knowing how to connect with kids on an
emotional level so they feel okay with me as their teacher. Kids are more likely to behave better
when they have a good connection with an adult. My field observation helped me understand the
teaching environment by seeing single handedly by myself what teachers go through daily and
seeing firsthand the typical behavior of a class full of second graders. I saw the teacher teaching
the class in whole group instruction, small group instruction, and independent work. The teachers
try to blend all learning styles into one class day. The educational philosophy that most closely
fits my current beliefs about education is progressivism. I believe that a child’s intelligence
shouldn’t be based on standardized testing, because every child has different strengths in
different areas of knowledge. No child is the same. Instead of expecting a whole class to be on
the same page about understanding all the things that you teach them is an unrealistic teaching
expectation. The historical event that set the stage for how I will think about children and schools
is the Head Start program. As a child, I went to Head Start because I was behind in speech. My
parents are deaf, and they couldn’t teach me words/how to talk. So, I had to start going to Head
Start for speech therapy and early learning. I was only two years old when I started going to
Head Start. I went to Head Start until I was old enough to be enrolled into Pre-K. The
instructional strategies that I will implement is using a reward system. When the classroom or a
student is making really good progress in class or goes out of their way to help student(s), I will
reward them for going out of their way to be good students and helping others. I will approach
student learning, student diversity, variability, and assessment by making sure each student’s
individual progress is being monitored and kept track of. While their progress as a class is
important, so is their individual progress. Also, they will be taught that accepting one another for
being different is important. Diversity in the classrooms is more and more common these days.
So, it is important that these kids don’t bully others because of what makes them different. The
skills and characteristics that you need to possess to continue in this career is being VERY
patient, understanding, compassion, strong-willed, and the drive to make a difference in these
kids’ lives. The specific steps I will take to achieve my goals and requirements for my teacher
licensure is continuing schooling and attending elementary schools for more hands-on
experience of teaching. Later, starting to sub for elementary classes. Then, eventually completing
all the required tests and other things needed. Lastly, graduating from college with a bachelor’s
teacher. I have been looking forward to working in the education field for such a long time. So
far, I have no doubts or regrets about choosing Education as my career path. It is hard but
fulfilling work. I am so excited, and I look forward to my future as an educator for children.
