Implementation of Proper Waste Disposal and

Segregation, Promotion of Active Community,
and Sustainable Environment Towards Lifetime
Achievement Project
A. The rationale of the project:

Solid waste management is one of the common environmental

problems in our community, and it extends to the whole world. This causes
severe effects on the natural process of our environment and worsens the
natural disasters that we are experiencing. Presently, substantial ordinances
have been passed and implemented in different municipalities in the
province of Iloilo. But patently upholding the ordinances is one of the
problems in the success of the goal. In support of this rationale, there are
visible pieces of evidence that exposed the need for people to develop
ecoliteracy. The wide distraction of natural resources has been recorded in
the past decades that resulted in severe natural disasters that claimed the
lives of many.

The Philippines is one of the countries fencing the pacific ocean which is
visited by more than 20 typhoons each year, unfortunately, one or two of
those typhoons are considered deadly. One of the remembered typhoons in
the Philippines is typhoon Hyan or Bagyong Yolanda which claimed 6,300
lives and distracted 95.5 billion costs of properties. This is considered the
deadliest typhoon in history “so far”. We are responsible for what the
happenings that we are experiencing right now. We are producers of
excessive Carbon dioxide that damages our ozone layer, from the things we
purchase, use, and do and it extends to the biggest contributor to our
society which is the manufacturing, and big corporations that emit a huge
amount of carbon dioxides and wastes.

B. Statement of the problem:

There are two barangays that we have identified. They share both
environmental issues about proper waste disposal. These barangays are
Barangay Sta. Monica in the municipality of Oton, and barangay Igtambo in
the municipality of San Miguel. They are one kilometer away from each
other. According to Jonathan Andea, one of the proponents of this project.
The arousing problem of household waste disposal in their barangay
becomes undeniably a big concern to the point that it becomes visibly
observed the trashes along the sidewalks, drainage, and open lands. Trashes
like plastics, cans, papers, bottles, and even toxic wastes, such as batteries,
electronic waste, bottles of pesticides, insecticides, etc. In addition, the
same situation has been observed in the community of Edgar Caballero in
barangay Sta. Monica. Proper waste disposal has been ignored, most
household doesn't have garbage pit and ended up disposing of their garbage
in the creeks, some through burning, and worst throwing it into the drainage
of the roads. Before, there is a collection of waste every Sunday and they
need to pay 25 pesos for the collection, but there are no updates about the
program of the municipality of Oton. Thus, these factors motivate the group
to create a project to address the issue of solid waste management

C. Objectives:

IWASTo: Implementation of Proper Waste Disposal and Segregation,

Promotion of Active Community, and Sustainable Environment Towards
Lifetime Achievement Project is a project which sought to address the
problem of proper waste disposal and solid waste management specifically it
is expected to:

1. Lessen the wastes that are scattered around the community

2. Identify which areas of the said barangay have severe problems with
proper waste disposal to implement the extensive application of the project.

3. Disseminate information that could awaken the empathy of the citizens of

the barangays.

4. Educate people to develop ecoliteracy, and produce ideas that are

sustainable for the development of the place.

5. People will be able to develop a sense of discipline in segregation and

disposal.

6. To create a healthy community and ecoliterate people that value the

importance of the environment.
D. Goals:

IWASTo: Implementation of Proper Waste Disposal and Segregation,

Promotion of Active Community, and Sustainable Environment Towards
Lifetime Achievement Project is a project that aims to promote community
cleanliness and orderliness as well as the activeness of the community.

1. Stop dumping garbages in creeks and open fields. Through

Symposium activity that reveals the effects of improper waste disposal
and through the integration of the said project. The project's
proponents expect to stem the dumping of wastes into the creeks and
open fields of the target area.

2. Enhance the community engagements of the people in valuing

the environment Through the implication of the project which will
only work through the cooperation of the people and the leaders.

3. To sustain the project which will result in a healthy

environment in the future. It takes time for our environment to heal
or to regain its loss but the effort and discipline developed through the
project will have a significant impact on the betterment of the
environment and the community.
E. Project Methodology

This project will undergo several processes which includes Phase 1

(Preparation), Phase 2 (Orientation) Phase 3 (Implementation.

Phase 1: Preparation

In this phase, we will be after the consultation and permission of the

Barangays towards this project. We will have the proper meeting to have the
connection and coordination with their officials.

After that, the group will identify places of interest where the project
will be implemented. The place must be embodied at least two of the
following criteria.

• Clogged canals

• Scattered garbage along sidewalks and open field areas

• Dumping garbage in any bodies of water

• No garbage collection

• No proper garbage disposal area

After that, we will also prepare the materials of the project, and this
things needed for the next phase.

Phase 2: Orientation

Within this phase, we will conduct an orientation for each barangay.

And the goal of this is to inform the people about the project and the benefit
they will actually have on this. It aims to educate, enlighten the minds, and
develop a sense of empathy. The group will prepare a presentation to be
presented during the activity. It includes important facts on proper waste
disposal and a video presentation about the effect of these activities. The
group will also invite a guest speaker coming from the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources who will tackle the importance of proper
waste management. The latter part of the symposium will cover the actual
plan for proper waste management.
Phase 3: Implementation

The group will tap the Local Government Unit of the said Barangay
where it is located to collect the garbage twice a week. Each barangay will
be divided into 5 different zones, and each zone will be given areas where
they will drop off their solid wastes. It will be clarified that the wastes should
be properly segregated according to their components such as
Biodegradable, Non-biodegradable, and toxic wastes. The policy of “No
Segregation, No Collection” will also be strictly implemented
