a. About the Studio
Stages of the Studio:
At the end of the studio, students learn the basic fundamentals of lighting
design with three projects in the term, to help them understand and respect
light in a better way
Learning Outcomes:

b. Design Exercises
ex 1: Lighting Analysis
Brief & Intent
Students need to build an understanding about artificial light and daylight and how it
has evolved over the time in the interiors. The students explored ideas and concepts that
revolved around lighting by examining the projects through the lens of various parameters.
Learning Outcomes:
Familiarizing with natural & artificial light in interior design projects.
(For the booklet, each student has choosen 4 projects out of their 20 projects; 2 from national
category and 2 projects from international category.)
MINT RESTAURANT
SFERA BLU
The main lighting
intervention is the jaali

space’s ambient lighting
scheme but also promotes

same time
ESQUIRE OFFICE

ex 2: Market Survey
Brief & Intent
Do a market survey to understand and familiarize yourself with the lighting vocabulary
describing the lighting / lighting systems. Understand the properties such as type of lamp,
beam angle, temperature, CRI, Lumens, Wattage, Capacity, Typology (Industrial / Commercial
/ Residential / Other).
Learning Outcomes:
The students developed the ability of investigating, inquiring the elements and format the
information.
The students understood the vocabulary which became the base for them to utilize it
appropriately in the upcoming exercises and the final project.
ex 3: Modhera Sun
Te m p l e R e p o r t
Brief & Intent
A visit to Modhera Sun Temple for the Primary Case study and understanding lighting design
factors of a space considering the influences of daylight and artificial light.
Topics to cover:
Learning Outcomes:
• Ability to evaluate the quality of daylight in indoor spaces.
• Ability to evaluate the light quality through materials.
• Also understand daylight considering effects on energy use and design.
• Understand the way daylight is behaving w.r.t to different interior architectural elements
in the space.
ex 4: Play of Light
Brief & Intent
Use the inferences from Ex 3 Modhera report to create criteria that are developed considering
the daylight, and create a 3D model to understand the day-light through the ‘Play of light’.
Students can model the main shell using any material and in any form. There is no size limit.
Study should incorporate:
• A model/ box of any size with apertures where you have the possibility to use light
source from outside as well as inside and play with light and shadows. There should be
possibilities to explore with internal surfaces and light sources also.
• Final output should have study models with a presentation of the study of light.
• Can go as creative as possible! Play with apertures, light sources, filters and internal
surfaces.
Learning Outcomes:
• Ability to understand how daylight affects and effects the interior spaces and its
interaction with different materials.
• Ability to create and understand sciography in space.
NARRATIVE & METAPHORIZATION EXPLORATION

INFERENCES FROM MODHERA REPORT
FOCAL GLOW - The slits around the jali create a visual frame, allowing it to behave as a single entity
PLAY OF BRILLIANCE - The shadows from various slits come together to create harmony in geometry
AMBIENT LUMINESCENCE - This variation works on the RGB spectrum and overlaps multiple hues
ex 5 : Light Synthesis
Brief & Intent
Combine & translate the conclusions / inferences from the Play of light exercise and Modhera
Visit to the interiors of a Virtual Model through lighting strategies.
• Make a Virtual cube : 10ft x 10ft x 10ft.
• Translate the inferences, observations and conclusions in this interior space to create the
same effect that you observed at Modhera Temple.
• Students can add elements in their interior space to create the lighting effects that were
observed at Modhera.
• Also translate and use the observations from the exercise of Play Of Light in this virtual
cube.
• This interior space will have no openings and therefore no natural light.
• All the lighting that will be in the cube will be in the form of artificial light.
• Students can use sketchup and photoshop to depict your interior spaces.
Learning Outcomes:
• Ability to come up with artificial lighting strategies.
• Ability to do renders specific to lighting design.

c. Design Project
Design Brief & Lighting Brief
THE ARMADA - PORTUGUESE MARITIME INTERPRETATION CENTRE, FORTALEZA DE DIU
Diu Fort, Portuguese, Island and Water, all these elements have one thing in common, that
is the Portuguese carrack. Due to these carracks, the Portuguese were able to establish
their rule over the Indian subcontinent. The project is an attempt to link all of these ele-
ments and showcase the development of these carracks through an experiential journey
set in the Diu Fort. It is a strategy to reinterpret and re-establish an investigative storyline
journey set within a strong sense of context and history. The exhibition is split in five parts,
namely Artilaria, Velas, Lacos, Cartografia & Artilaria II
In this project, light plays the role of a re-interpretor. It helps reimagine the intended sto-
ryline of an interior of a Portuguese carrack in a contemporary manner yet retaining the
rusticity of a Portuguese carrack. The light plays its part either through focal flow, play of
brilliance or ambient luminescence. It helps weave multiple experential storylines within a
finite imaginative spectrum. It also inculcates a level flexibility and modularityconsidering
the temporality of the project.
