Research Theme: The environmental impact of digital transformation Research
Topic: The impact of digital endpoint devices and ways to reduce environmental damage.
“The amount of data created and stored globally is expected to reach 175 Zettabytes by 2025, a six-fold
increase from 2018. This will demand additional hardware and power consumption, which; in turn, will
increase the environmental impact of the digital sector and there is already increasing attention on the
environmental footprint of ICT equipment and services as they become more widespread in all aspects
of human life. It is the responsibility of everyone to take action in addressing the challenges of climate
change, as professionals we must also seek ways that the digital sector can play its part. While digital
technologies are one of the sectors that have achieved greater efficiency; achieving about 100 times
more computation power from the same amount of energy per decade, it remains unsustainable. The
sector must continue to seek ways in which it can continue to support and drive innovation while
addressing the global climate emergency for a greener and fairer future.”.(Pearson, 2022)You are
expected to carry out small-scale research in order to explore the impact of digital endpoint devices
and ways to reduce environmental damage, from the standpoint of a computing professional. The
research that you carry out can be based on an organization that you have access to gather sufficient

Chapter 01 – Introduction and Research Questions & Objectives
1.1 Background study of the research
1.2 Introduction to the Organization
This office is established to register births and deaths of people and print them. The
scope of this research is the applicants who regularly visit Kurunegala birth and death
registrar office. On an average, about 200 applicants visit the registrar's office daily.
The main objective of this study is to reduce the environmental damage caused by the
use of digital endpoint devices at the Kurunegala Birth and Death Registrar's Office.
Specific objectives –
- To identify the impact of email based verify system to environmental damage
- To identify the impact of digital application system on environmental damage
- To identify the impact of digital billing system on environmental damage
S.A.H.I Dissanayaka
2.1 Introduction
Every Birth and Death Registrar Office uses a book for the applicants’ details are
recorded in this Book. Since all the details are recorded in a book, it cost paper which
leads to environmental damage.
Every applicant should submit an application in order to get a copy of a Birth and Death
Certificate. These applications are papers and paper cause environmental damage.
All the certificates are printed using a printer or a photocopy machine. Certificates are
printed in A4 sized paper These papers are certified by Additional District Registrar
Officer and issued to the applicant. Most of the time these certificates are used to verify
person’s date of birth, mother’s name, father’s name, etc. in the end all these certificates
are stored in a file somewhere in an office inside a cupboard. Finally, certificates are
stored and there isn’t any much of a use other than verifying. Hence these papers are
wasted and caused environmental damage.
S.A.H.I Dissanayaka
submitting file. The applicant should come to the Registrar Office in order to request a
certificate, and take the certificate back to where it needs. But using e-mail system, the
applicant doesn’t have to come to the registrar office. The government officers can send a
verified email to preferred receiver to verify their certificate.

Research Type
The research type is Quantitative. Quantitative research is the process of collecting and
analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and averages, make predictions,
test causal relationships, and generalize results to wider populations.
S.A.H.I Dissanayaka
Quantitative research is the opposite of qualitative research, which involves collecting
and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio).
Quantitative research is widely used in the natural and social sciences: biology,
chemistry, psychology, economics, sociology, marketing, etc.
In descriptive research, you simply seek an overall summary of your study variables.
In correlational research, you investigate relationships between your study variables.
In experimental research, you systematically examine whether there is a cause-and-effect
relationship between variables.
Correlational and experimental research can both be used to formally test hypotheses, or
predictions, using statistics. The results may be generalized to broader populations based
on the sampling method used.
To collect quantitative data, you will often need to use operational definitions that
translate abstract concepts (e.g., mood) into observable and quantifiable measures (e.g.,
self-ratings of feelings and energy levels).
Research Approach
In this research the author used Deductive Approach
Mainly there are two types of approach inductive and deductive.

3.3 Sampling
The targeted domain is the applicants who visit to the Office in Kurunegala within a day.
The number of applicants visiting to the Office is changes depending on the requirement
of the applications. From the collected data in Kurunegala registrar office, the average
number of applicants within a day is nearly 200. Therefore according to the Morgan’s
table, the sampling number is 132. There for the author should collect data from at least
132 applicants.

H03 was accepted and the null hypothesis H04 in set 2 was rejected. Which implies the
using online application system can reduce environmental damage.
According to the correlation analysis in table 4.11, there is a significant Positive
correlation (r=0.289, p<0.01) between introducing email system. Therefore H05 was
accepted and the null hypothesis H06 in set 3 was rejected. Which implies the using email
system can reduce environmental damage.
According to Reliability analysis the Cronbach’s Alpha value is 62.1% which is greater
than 50%. Therefore the collected data can be implied as reliable data.
S.A.H.I Dissanayaka
The project was supposed to acquire the effect on environmental damage by using digital
application, digital billing system and email system.
The analysis show that majority of the people likes to submit digital application. And they
also think using paper application is a waste of product which cause environmental
damage. Hence, we can imply that the project was a success.
The digital billing system worked well since most of the customer caring organizations
issue bills digitally printed or use email system to send bills. Therefore, it makes easier
for the government employees and also reduce paper usage.
Basically, collecting data from the applicant was a challenge, but most of the applicant
volunteered to fill the form. The researcher used google form to collect data. the author
has to ask personally to fill the google form depending on their experience.
The author learned about how to conduct research while undertaking this project.
It takes a lot of time to get the required data from the applicants. Which takes most of the
time in the project. The author should start collecting data as soon as the necessary
information are gathered.
Analyzing data was easy when author use excels sheets and SPSS software. The author
used excel “IF” statement to easily get output from input data. writing the literature
review was not authors field of expertise.
Researches help to identify problems and give solutions for them. In the filed of software
development, its all about finding solutions for a question. Hence research helps to find
solutions for a question which is same as software development.
5.2 Conclusion
The Registrar office was not satisfied because they use too much paper and it causes
paper waste. In every day there are 200 applications that are stored in the registrar office
Kurunegala. All the applications are printed in the government printing department and
they need to transport these applications to Additional District Registrar Offices all
around Sri Lanka. Some registrar offices use death applications for birth application by
erasing the “Death” part of the application. Some people needed to use more than one
application because they submitted wrong information. In order to overcome this paper
waste, in this research; the researcher has introduced a method where the applicant don’t
need to submit a paper application. The researcher has concluded that people are more
likely to use a digital application other than paper applications. Since paper usage cause
environmental damage.
S.A.H.I Dissanayaka
Every applicant needs to pay some cash money to get a verified copy of their requested
certificate. When issuing a certificate, the Registrar Office issue a receipt from a receipt
book. These receipt book has 200 pages; the officer uses carbon copy to make one copy
for the office and another copy for the applicant. When issuing an application one receipt
is also issued, this receipt is a waste of paper. The researcher has introduced a digital
billing system where the applicant can view the bill from their phone or get a small
thermal printed paper bill. From the analysis of the research the majority of the people
likes to have a digital bill instead of a paper receipt.
The verified certificates that issued from the registrar office are used to verify a person’s
name, Birthday, patents names, etc. all the certificates are printed in a A4 sized paper.
These papers are only used for above mentioned purpose. After verification these
certificates are stored in a file in most of the offices. This can be considered as a waste of
paper. The researcher has introduced an e-mail method in order to send verified certificate
using digital file format (PNG, PDF). Since most of the offices are using digital
technology for their day today work, a digital certificate is a good form of storing data
without physical data.
5.3 Recommendations
- Encourage every applicant to submit a digital application.
- Aware all government employees about digital application and the web
application system.
- Acknowledge all applicants about digital certificates and their usage.
- Acknowledge applicants to use digital technology in order to use less paper and
reduce environmental damage.
