Topic Overview

This learning activity sheet aims at helping you reinforce your current skill in writing expanded
definition of words. This skill is needed in writing a research report, from writing the operational
definition of terms until the review of literature.

How do you find definitions of terms that you are unfamiliar with? Do you know how to

You occasionally erred in communicating a word's precise meaning. So, before you can achieve
accuracy, it is crucial to broaden the meaning of words to explain difficult phrases, abstract notions,
contentious terms, unfamiliar and broad terms, and nebulous thoughts that go beyond some
fundamentals.

The achievement of this accuracy entails better understanding of research and well-profound
research report. Having oriented with expanded definitions also inculcate a skill in unlocking

Three Ways of Expanding Definition

1. Expanding by Giving an Example

It helps you illustrate and describe by providing clear, specific, extra facts or information to the
word and clarify an abstract and formless concept. You can use these signals for concrete examples:
for example, for instance, such as, similar to, specifically, to illustrate, much like, in the same way as.

Example: Honesty is the virtue of adherence to only facts. For example, a witness on the witness
stand tells only the truth based on what he/she saw.

2. Expanding by Comparing and Contrasting

It shows how the subject is like /unlike or how the topic differs or is similar from others
in the same class. They are used to explain two subjects and help you decide between two options.
With the signal words: also, although and, as well as, better, bigger than, but, compared with, different
from, either however, on the other hand, similar to, while, and yet.
 Example: Speed is a concept that marks our day. Sluggishness is out. Speed is demanded by
industry which is constantly on the look – out for new inventions. Sluggishness is penalized,
especially in industries where compensation depends upon output.

3. Expanding by Describing a Process

It gives a series of instructions to make or produce something. It joins with the use of linking
verbs and common signals such as and, then, and then, before, during, finally, first, lastly, today,
since, and immediately.

Example: Turn on your product. After which, press the home button, if necessary. Finally,
press the arrow buttons to select Maintenance, then press the OK button.

The Philosophical Rules of Definition

In basic and more standard system, definitions are governed by Philosophy. In this manner, a
well-structured definition has a pattern. This is known as the rule of genus and differentia.

1. Genus. It is existing definition that serves as a portion of the new definition; all definitions
with the same genus are considered members of that genus.
2. Differentia. It is a portion of the new definition that is not provided by the genus.
For example,
a. A rectangular prism is a polyhedron with two congruent and parallel bases.

A Definition is a
coming up with uniform names and meanings of objects, events, and things.

Expanded definition may explain the word’s etymology or historical roots, describes sensory
characteristics of something (how it looks, feels, sounds, taste, smells) identifies its parts, indicates
how something is used, explains what is not, provides an example of it, and /or notes similarities or
differences between this term and other words or things. It comes in the form of additional sentences
that support a formal definition which becomes the topic sentence of a paragraph.
