Example 7: A plate clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and
two discs on the driven shaft, providing four pair of contact
surfaces. The outside diameter of the contact surface is 240 mm
and inside diameter 120 mm. Assuming uniform pressure and
coefficient friction 0.3, find the total spring load pressing the plates
together to transmit 25 kW at 1600 rpm. (AU-Nov. 2009)
Given data: z1 = 3, z2 = 2, z = 4, R = 0.12 m, r = 0.06 m, Uniform
pressure, μ = 0.3, Power = 25 kW, N = 1600 rpm

Example 8: A multi disk clutch consists of five steel plates and four
bronze plates. The inner and outer diameters of friction disks are
75 mm and 150 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.1
and the intensity of pressure is limited to 0.3 N/mm2. Assume the
uniform wear theory, calculate the required operating force and
power transmitting capacity at 750 rpm. (AU-May 2008)
Given data: z1 = 5, z2 = 4, r = 0.0375 m, R = 0.075 m, μ = 0.1, P = 0.3
