Songdo city, Korea Songdo international city is a model for the sustainable city
that includes planning and activating a ubiquitous computing
• officially known as Songdo environment. This is achieved by linking an organic axis to a
International Business District central control center for integrated monitoring and
(Songdo IBD), is a smart city, built management of different services, including information
on 600 ha (1,500 acres) of reclaimed technology, management facilities,
land along Incheon's waterfront,[3] healthcare, and security.
30 km (19 mi) southwest of Seoul,
South Korea. It is connected to
Incheon International Airport by a
12.3 km (7.6 mi) reinforced concrete
highway bridge called Incheon
Bridge. Along with Yeongjong and
Cheongna, it is part of the Incheon
Free Economic Zone
• POPULATION (167,346)
• Started building in 2002 until 2022

1- Smart mobility
• The streets that connect the district are lined with sensors that measure energy use and
traffic flow as a means of quantifying sustainability to support its highest concentration of
LEED-certified projects in the world
• The city is planned so as to residents need not walk more than 12.5 minutes to reach all
services such as parks, shops, or transportation.
• Observing traffic—both vehicular and pedestrian—is essential for the workers of roads and
transport access.
2- Smart environment
• Songdo also features a massive seaside park outfitted with self-sustaining irrigation
systems to provide ample public space.
• At the level of individual residents, trash tubes take garbage away to a central plant
where it is automatically sorted into recyclables and waste to be burned
• the villas and surrounding landscapes have been planned in the shape of a “Dragon
village” as a central feature of this site. Each villa has been designed in a sustainable
way that exploits solar energy.
• Attention to energy efficiency and environmental impacts began in the construction
phase, with the objective to recycle 75% of waste.
• The CENTRAL park also has a rain-saving feature to save on water consumption

3- Smart living
• homes are operated by cellphone apps that control everything from heating and air conditioning, to
artificial light levels.
• the village has been designed as a residential area (apartments) to accommodate the middle economic class
of citizens and students. The general organization of the village has been designed in a sustainable way,
optimizing orientation to the sun.
• The city has been designed for tourist villas, based on the East Asian style of high-tech buildings. In order
to achieve unity in the plan
4- Smart people
• involving positive types of responsibility such as making public employers more responsible for their
decisions
• Listening to citizens: increasing the input of residents into public zone decisions and actions,
which could be viewed either as democratisation or as participation
• developing communication between government and business by digitising business
governance, procurement, and services, to improve quality, suitability, and cost
• Creating partnerships: forming organisational groupings to achieve economic and social
objectives
• Developing communities: developing the social and economic capabilities and wealth of local
communities

5- Smart economic

• Canal Walk is centrally located along a stretch of man-made canal running through the heart of Songdo
IBD. It runs 2625 feet within blocks D1–D4, each containing five story glass buildings. The first two
stories include shops such as bookstores, general stores, fitness clubs, and restaurants. The top three
stories contain 445 office units. Pedestrian movement is also encouraged by protecting people from traffic
and noise.
• Songdo Central Park
• The U-life business model also has the characteristic to be a value -generating model. It is not focused
only on technological features but also practicable business model. Moreover, a part of the income
generated will be invested into community projects that will serve the inhabitants of Songdo, containing:
• - U-business, U-finance, U-transportation
• The main idea of a Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is to provide companies with the best environment for
worldwide business activities. This zone will also involve quality schools, hospitals, and transportation
and tourism services. Eventually, FEZs are planned to offer world-class cities based on global standards
and serving multinational and multicultural communities. become a popular filming location for
commercials and music videos.
6- Smart governance
• Better planning at : the village has been designed as a residential area
(apartments) to accommodate the middle economic class of citizens and
students. The general organization of the village has been designed in a
sustainable way, optimizing orientation to the sun
• tourist villas based on the East Asian style of high-tech buildings. In order to
achieve unity in the plan, the villas and surrounding landscapes have been
planned in the shape of a “Dragon village” as a central feature of this site.
• Policy tasks for U-government • Creation of suitable future government and city
development methods for a ubiquitous city. •Improvement of law and regulation
for the future community. •Private information safety and system stability.
•Improving Government Processes: U-government schemes within this field deal
especially with improving the internal workings of the public zone. They include:
• Reducing process costs: improving the input-output ratio by reducing financial
or time costs • Controlling process performance: planning, observing, and
controlling the use of process resources (financial, human, etc.) • Creating
strategic relations in government: connecting government agencies, levels, and
databases to reinforce capacity to improve, investigate, and implement strategies
and plans in relation to government processes • Creating empowerment:
transmitting power and resources for processes from their existing sites to new
sites

Disadvantages of Songdo city

• There’s no doubt that Songdo is revolutionary and is by far the most
technologically integrated city in the world. But what it forgets in its
vision for the city of the future, is that cities are designed for people,
not for fancy AI features and sensors. Many critics and inhabitants
alike say that living there is “cold” and “deserted”, with some going so
far as to compare it to the ghost town of Chernobyl.
• What the designers and planners of Songdo should have done was
design around the perspective and needs of a human being first with
technology acting as the supplement, instead of designing for
technology, with humans being just in the peripheral
• It’s easy to automate many processes, and collect infinite amounts of
data- but is it necessary to ensure that a city is performing?
