Brief Note on Swarnamukhi Anicut System

Swarnamukhi River originates from Nallmalai Ghats in

Chandragiri Mandal and runs through Chandragiri, Tirupati, Renigunta, Yerpedu and

Srikalahasti Mandals in Chitoor District and runs in Pellakur, Naidupeta, ogili and Vakadu

Mandals in Nellore District and finally joins in Bay of bengal in Vakadu mandal of Nellore

Dist.

The river flows in the heart of Srikalahasti Town. An Anicut

was constructed in the year 1956 at a cost of Rs.6.75/11.66 lakhs. The anicut is situated D/S of

Poothalapattu-NaidupetE road bridge at latitude of 13° 45’ 20’’ and longitude of 79°

43’15”.

The anicut has a main canal (Chembedu canal from head regulator) for a length of

15.4 km, covering 8.40 km in SriKalahasti and Thottambedu mandals and 7.00 km in Nellore

District. There is no left canal to this anicut. The project was constructed for providing

irrigation facilities to an extent of 10,200 Acres duly feeding 46 tanks in 25 villages of

Buchinaidu kandriga, Thottambedu of Chitoor District and Pellakur mandal of Nellore District.

There is no direct ayacut to the main canal except this main canal feeds the

system tank i.e.Chembedu tank. Regulators are existing on the main canal to feed the branch

channels which in turn feeds the 46 system tanks to irrigate an ayacut of 10,200 Acres in

Chittoor and Potti Sree Ramulu Nellore District. This system tank also receives water from

T.G.P. The Modernization of Swarnamukhi Anicut System is now under JICA Project.
