Introduction

One of Garmin BaseCamp mapping software’s best features is the database nature of
storing the user’s routes, waypoints and tracks in its Library. The default Library is
shown in the upper Left window and contains My Collection List Folders and Lists.
One challenge new users may run into after setting up their Library is that they want to
access the Library from different computers; say for example an office desktop and a
travel laptop. Many people simply backup their main Library and restore it to the other
computer but this can be cumbersome and tedious.
Garmin has provided a feature that allows a simpler solution though. Basecamp allows
the user to select where on the computer to save the Library (database), and by saving
the Library to an online personal cloud storage service such as Drop Box or Microsoft’s
One Drive the user can access the Library from any computer with Basecamp
installed.
For these instructions we’re using Microsoft’s free OneDrive online cloud storage. It’s
important to note that with MS OneDrive a copy of the Library is stored locally on each
computer. The local Library is synced to the cloud storage when Basecamp is opened
if connected to the internet. This means that you still have access to the Library
without an internet connection.

(Note: this document was created based on BaseCamp v.4.6.2 Some functions or features may
change with future releases)

New England Riders is a group of motorcyclists who self-organize to ride and have fun with other
riders. It is not a club; there are no dues, membership, rules, or officers. We are an inclusive club and
all motorcycle brands are welcome. We believe in safe group riding and being respectful toward
others. Everyone is welcome to participate in the Facebook Group, the forum, at social gatherings,
and on rides.
Basecamp Library Access from Multiple Computers
In order to set up your Basecamp Library across different computers using cloud
storage (what I will refer to as a shared drive) the following steps should be followed in
order:
A. Make a backup of your existing Basecamp Library

B. Create folder on the shared drive for your Basecamp Library

C. Redirect Basecamp to the new folder on your shared drive

D. Restore the backup to the new folder on your shared drive

Following these steps in this order is important to maintain not only your data but also
the My Collection List Folders and Lists structure you have in place.

A. The first step is to make a backup of your BC Library.

 Use: File/Backup in the pull down menu and to make a backup file of your
Library. This may take a few minutes if you have a large database.
 Save the backup to your desktop.

B. Now we need to create a folder on your shared drive to hold the Basecamp
Library. What you name this folder is not important – I called mine Basecamp
One Drive
 Navigate to your shared drive using Windows Explorer
 Click on the New Folder icon and enter a name for your folder.
C. The next step is to redirect Basecamp to the new Library folder on your shared
drive.
 In Basecamp use the pulldown menu to select: Edit/Options

 In the window that opens click on “General” and then the “+” icon in the
Database Options section.
 Enter a name for the database. This is the name that will display within
Basecamp in place of “My Collection”. I chose “Shared”. Browse to the
new folder you created on your shared drive.

 Click Ok, and it should look something like this:

 Click OK to close the Edit Options window. Basecamp will need to restart
at this point. (Note that you may need to close and/or restart the program
manually.)

D. Restore the backup to the new Library folder.

 Since we’ve redirected Basecamp to the new Library folder on your shared
drive the backup will be restored to that folder.

 In Basecamp using the pull down menu select: File/Restore. A window will
pop up warning that some data may be lost. Click Ok to begin the restore.
Once finished Basecamp will need to restart again.
E. Now we have to redirect Basecamp on the other computer to this new Library
folder.
 Simply repeat Step C on each computer you wish to have access to the
shared Library.
