AIM: Calculate refrigeration/ air conditioning load of given theatre / restaurant /cold storage by using
standard data sheets.
Objectives of the Load Calculation: After completion of the practical, student will be able to,
Calculate load of refrigeration/Cold Storage (HVAC) systems.
(a) List of various instrumentation required to measure the required data:
Example No 1: Tonne Potato at 42°C temperature enters in a cold storage, where its
temperature is reduced to 15°C in 8 hours. If specific heat of Potato is 3.2 kJ/kg then calculate
the cooling load produced in kW to store potatoes
Solution:
Mass of potatoes = 6 Tonne = 6 * 1000 = 6000 kg
Specific heat of Potato = 3.2 kJ/kg
Cooling time = 8 hours = 8 * 3600 sec
Initial Temperature of potato = t1=42°C
Final Temperature of potato = t2=15°C
∗ ∗
Product Load (Qp) =
6000 ∗ 3.2 ∗ 42 15
=
8∗3600
= 18 k W
Case Study 1: Calculate load to store 2000 METRIC Tons of seed potatoes at the indoor
temperature of 20C DBT is to be maintained with relative humidity 92% from the given below
data.
1. Outside conditions = 330C DBT, 85 % RH
2. U‐ value for walls = 0.176 W/m2k
3. U‐value for Ceiling = 0.18 W/m2k
4. Total Effective temperature difference (TETD) for wall = 350C
5. Total Effective temperature difference (TETD) for Ceiling = 460C
6. Cold storage dimension: 38 m length * 28 m width * 15 m height
7. Full capacity of storage occupy by potato in 25 days.
8. Specific heat of potato = 3.45 kJ/kg K
9. Rate of respiration of potato per kg = 1.97 * 10‐5 kW
10. Operating time of plant in a day = 20 Hours
11. Occupancy = 5 (350W total heat/person)
12. Air Change = 2660 m3/hr
13. Density of air = 1.13 kg/m3
14. Lightning load per square meter of floor are = 10 W
(Note: Neglecting the door size in compare to wall size and infiltration due to door opening during
operation)
From Psychrometric Chart:
For the inside conditions of 330C DBT, 85% R.H.
Wi = .0274 kg/kg or 27.4 gm/kg of dry air
For the outside conditions of 20C DBT, 92% RH
Wo = 0.004 kg/kg or 4.0 gm/kg of dry air
External loads:
(a) Heat transfer rate through the walls:
Total wall area is = 2 *H * (L + B)
= 2 * 15 * (38 + 28)
= 1980 m3
Qwall = Uwall* Awall* TETDwall
= 0.176*1980 *35
= 12197 W (sensible)
= 12.20 kW
(b) Heat transfer rate through roof:
Qroof = Uroof*Aroof*TETDroof
= 0.18*1064*46
= 8810W (sensible)
=8.810kW
(c) Heat transfer due to infiltration:
Wall infiltration = Air change per hour
= 2660 m3/hr
= m3/min
= 44.33 m3/min
(i)Sensible heat transfer rate due to infiltration:
Sensible heat: Qs = 0.02043 * 44.33 * (to‐ tr)
= 0.02043 * 44.33 * (33‐2)
= 28.08 kW
(ii) Latent heat transfer rate due to infiltration:
Latent heat: Q L = 0.0491 * Q * (Wo‐ Wr)
Note: Wo & Wr are taken from psychometric chart)
Psychometric chart, Wo = 27.4 gr/ kg (@3 °C, 85% RH)
Wr = 4 gr/ kg (@2 °C, 92% RH)
QL =0.0491 * 44.33 * (27.4‐4)
= 50.93 kW (latent)
(d) Occupants Heat:
Q = No. of occupants*SHG
= 5*350
= 1750W (sensible)
= 1.75 kW
(e) Lighting Load: Heat given up by the source of light is lightning load.
Qlight = 10 * (L * B)
= 10*(38*28)
= 10640W
= 10.64kW
(f) Product Heat: It is the amount of heat to be extracted from the product to maintain the
product at desired temperature. Product heat is calculated by using formula
One day input load = 2000000/25 = 80000 kg
∗ ∗
Qp =
∗
∗ . ∗
=
∗
= 118.83 kW
(g) Respiration Heat: It is the heat generated by the product during the respiration and given by
formula
Qr = m * R
= 2000000 * 1.97 * 10‐5
= 39.40 kW
So, total load on cold storage is
Qtotal = 12.20 + 8.81 + 28.08 + 50.93 + 1.75 + 10.64 + 118.83 + 39.40
= 270.64 kW
= 270.64/3.5 TR
= 77.32TR
= 78 TR
