Project no: S08050 Date: 15/10/09 Sheet no.: 1 of 4 Computed by: B.S.K
General Assumptions:
1- The calculation presented here below are for reference and guidance only,
as foam system is a pre-engineered system to come complete from the supplier.
Discharge Criteria = 6.5 l/min.m2 = 0.16 gpm/ft2 (Refer to NFPA 16, section 4-3.2)
But for the maximum spacing between sprinklers not to exceed 3.7 m
(Refer to NFPA 16, section 4-3.7.2)

And hence,
Nozzle minimum operating pressure= 30 psi (Refer to NFPA 15, section A.8.1.2)
(Refer to ANSUL foam systems
design and applications manual attached)
(Refer to Viking design data, attached)
Type of foam concentrate used is AFFF (Refer to NFPA 11, section 4.3.1.4)
Density of foam concentrate (ρ) = 1.011 g/ml (Refer to ANSUL design data, attached)

Since,
Q (gpm) = K √P (psi)
And,
K= 3 (Refer to ANSUL foam systems design and applications manual attached)
and since we have two approaches, one is to satisfy the density and the other is to satisfy
the minimum pressure required; we'll calculate both and apply the one with the greater demand.
Q= 14.3 gpm
P= 30.0 psi
Q= 16.4 gpm
