Subject: Response to the article of Jonathan Jones about his opinion on graffiti

Dear editor,

I am writing to express my thoughts regarding graffiti and the article “Graffiti is ugly,
stupid and threatening, there’s more creativity on crochet.”

For first I wish to provide a distinct perspective from the one presented in the
article. To begin, the author Jonathan Jones expresses his opinion saying that the vast
majority of graffiti is ugly, stupid, and vaguely threatening, Jonathan quotes too on the
article David Lynch opinion (that graffiti is ruining the world and making our planet ugly)
to prove his point of view. He punctuates too that Graffiti is a pretentious subcultural
backbeat that is replicated everywhere, with the same style, chunky lettering, and
coded messages. And still not enough he says that graffiti is hypermasculine,
aggressive and destructive of people’s desire for a decent environment, and that the
society only value this kind of art because is done by men.

Well to start in my perspective Jonathan Jones is tremendously mistaken by

saying that graffiti is ugly, threating and all with the same style, because graffiti is a highly
creative and diverse art form with numerous styles and techniques used by artists worldwide.
Jones based his opinion without really knowing about graffiti, he in general to form his opinion
picked a portion of artists on graffiti, who uses the style of tags on their paints, this style is the
simplest form of graffiti, consisting of the artist's name or signature written in a stylized manner.
And because some graffiti arts use this style not being the most visually attractive, he
generalizes all graffiti’s by being ugly and stupid, he just ignores the innumerous amazing styles
and techniques that graffiti has, like the 3D graffiti, Stencils, Bubble letters, and etc... Other
misconception made by Jonathan is the fact of the saying that graffiti is only valued because are
made by men, and I partially disagree with his opinion because graffiti is a form of art that is
made on urban environments, and most people that see this kind of arts don’t appreciate more or
less because its made by a men or a women and yes because its own beauty, but I understand too
that in general women on the world of graffiti have less space in context of a society male-
chauvinist.

Based on this concerns it is important to punctuate that art is subjective, and that it don’t has a
based form, considering what is visual attractive or not, everyone has an unique point of view to
understand art.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,

Pedro Pontes
