General
Multiplexed electrical system
Volvo Buses has introduced an integrated multiplexed
electrical system built up of control units which define a
bus’s subsystems and functions.

The multiplexed electrical system has four data links:

an A-bus handles the driveline functions, a B-bus body
functions, C-bus chassis functions, and a D-bus is a link
between the C and the B-buses.
The control units on the A-bus communicates across a
fast control link J1939 and a slower information link J1708.
Control signals are sent on the fast link, and information
and diagnosis signals are sent on the slow link.

A template can be laid on breakout box 9998699 when

it is use for fault tracing. The template is numbered and
divided into coloured fields. There are different templates
and template selection is determined by which adapter
cable is used. The numbering and the coloured fields are
determined by the adapter cable connector and the number
of pins. This makes measuring easier when this involves
two contacts in the measuring box at the same time.

Group 37 MID 188 CECM-B Design and Function

Design and Function

CECM-B
Design
CECM-B, Central Electronic Control Module-Body, is
the control unit which is the central component in the
body system. It communicates via SAE J1587, SAE
J1939, and the CAN-bus for the body (B-bus). For more
information on the multiplexed electrical system, see
“Multiplexed electrical system” page 2. On the B-bus,
the CECM-B communicates with the body modules via
the VOLCANO-B link. CECM-B is also connected to
VOLCANO D if the bus is equipped with AIC.

T3014575

Function
The functionality of the CECM-B is designed to control
inputs and outputs on the different body functions. In
addition to this, it manages communication between the
driveline and the body, which is particularly clear when
down loading software. CECM-B receives the software
which comes from the Master ID and then distributes it to
the correct control units in the body.

Parameter list
Information on vehicle and customer parameters, per
vehicle, are available via the Master ID web page.

8
Group 37 MID 188 CECM-B Design and Function

I/O-A
Design
I/O-A, Input/Output-A (Body), is a control unit which has
the task of controlling specific functions which do not
have high power requirements. It communicates via the
CAN-bus for the body (B-bus). For more information
on the multiplexed electrical system, see “Multiplexed
electrical system” page 2. It has three connectors:

• Connection for inputs and outputs.

• Connection for system power.
• Connection for communication links.

T3015585

Function
The module manages specific functions in the body which
do not have a high power requirement. The number of
I/O-A varies dependent on the level of equipment on the
bus. I/O-A communicates via the CAN link and also on
J1587.

I/O-B
Design
I/O-B, Input/Output B, is a control unit which has the task
of acting as the distributing electrical circuit for CECM-B.
The difference between I/O-A and I/O-B is that I/O-B has a
significantly higher current tolerance. It communicates via
the CAN-bus for the body (B-bus). For more information
on the multiplexed electrical system, see “Multiplexed
electrical system” page 2. It has three connectors:

• Connection for inputs and outputs.

• Connection for system power.
• Connection for communication links.

T3015586

Function
The module acts as the CECM distributing electrical circuit
for the body functions when it has very high current levels.
The number of I/O-B varies dependent on the equipment
level on the bus. I/O-B communicates via the CAN link.

9
Group 37 MID 188 CECM-B Malfunction

Malfunction
MID 188 CECM-B, fault tracing
If the control unit gives strange responses or does not
respond, it can be assumed that there is a fault. The
following faults can occur:

• A function is not activated or does not function as it

should.
• Fault on downloading software to the control unit.
• Fault on the CAN cabling.

Link up to the Master ID and go in under ”Fault log”. If

this indicates that the ”CECM-B is not responding”, this
means that there is a CECM-B related fault. Start fault
tracing by restarting the CECM. This is carried out by
disconnecting the power. If after this the fault continues,
make measurements on the control unit and the cabling
to the control unit as described in the tables below. After
this step has been taken and if there is still no contact, it
can be assumed that the control unit is defective.

Measurement at the control unit

Check measurements at the control unit are made by
connecting measurement box 9998699, 9813194 and
9998533 at the control unit’s connector. Conversion
templates 9990130 and 9990132 are required when
making measurements. Voltage and resistance
measurements can therefore be made directly on the
control unit’s pins.

Voltage measuring at the control unit

• The breakout box should be connected to the control
unit using the connector, see picture.

• The ignition switch should be in position (II).

Oscilloscope measurements in VCADS Pro

Measurements are made via the breakout box. Select

VCADS tests with oscilloscope (for example fuel
pressure), tests with a red border around can include an
oscilloscope.

Information can be obtained from the graph. The graph

should be between 0 and 5 V and be reversed. There
may be some disturbance of the signal in the form of
distortion/saw-tooth. This does not necessarily mean that
there is a fault (in a correctly functioning oscilloscope
there is a pure square wave). Measurements can be
made at several points on the link (at different control
units) to check whether there is traffic on the entire link.

Suitable settings:
Channels.. ± 5 V on channel A and B respectively
Time base.. 50 ms (x-axis)
