ADAPTING CONTINUOUSLY:

THE SKILLS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Hello everyone,

To be able to constantly adapt to our changing world, certain skills are essential. Let's
find out about them together.

WHAT SKILLS ARE NEEDED TO GIVE YOU THE EDGE IN THE 21ST
CENTURY?

One of the most widely used models for listing and categorizing the essential skills for
the 21st century is the "4Cs" model. In fact, following the recommendations of the scien-
tific community, it has been officially adopted by many organizations, such as the Word
Economic Forum and the OECD.

And for good reason, since the four skills it enshrines - creativity, critical thinking, com-
munication and cooperation –have a major impact on academic and professional perfor-
mance. In reality, these are the cognitive skills that enable us to adapt to a situation,
while also being the most complex ones to computerize in the short or medium term.

CREATIVITY

Creativity is a process designed to transform what already exists in an original way or to

produce something new. It generally includes:
Originality and inventiveness;
Divergent and innovative thinking;
The ability to consider failure as an opportunity for improvement.

Creativity is particularly useful when no known solution exists to solve a problem. It is

closely linked to sensitivity and empathy.

CRITICAL THINKING

Critical thinking refers to the mental processes, strategies and representations that
people use to solve problems, make decisions and learn new concepts. It’s used to ana-
lyze and cross-check information, to make links, and to identify the answers that are
best suited to a given situation. It’s associated with 4 capacities: observation, identifica-
tion, pertinence, and selection.

COMMUNICATION

The aim of communication is to transmit or receive messages accurately, that is, with the
fewest possible undesired effects. It’s a very complex skill, involving many behavioural
aspects, such as humility and empathy.

COOPERATION

Cooperation enables people to find their place within a group in order to achieve a goal,
and to facilitate the work of the other members of the group.

It’s underpinned by 4 core features:

- The awareness of sharing common objectives;
- Real discussion about common goals;
- Intrinsic motivation;
- Sensitivity to oneself, to other people, and to the context.

So while cooperation seems unlikely without communication, it is in itself essential: an

organization can only survive through its members’ cooperation.

Thank you for your attention, and see you soon!
