Accidents may happen to people in or near their homes. They may slip and fall or burn
themselves. Children must not play with matches. They may cause a fire.Last Friday my young
brother, Maged, was home alone. While he was playing with matches, fire broke out in the
house. Luckily, I arrived at that moment and I could smell smoke. I opened the door quickly and
grabbed a blanket, covered Maged with it and pulled him out of the house. I called the firemen.
They came at once and put out the fire.
Everybody was very proud of me because I acted bravely.

2- Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
Science has told us so much about the moon that it is fairly easy to imagine what it would
be like to go there. It is certainly not a friendly place. As there is no water or air, there can be
no life of any kind. There is no variety of scenery either. For mile after mile there are only flat
plains of dust with mountains around them. Above, the sun and the stars shine in a black sky. If
you step out of the mountain shadows, it will mean moving from severe cold into great heat.
These extreme temperatures continually break rocks away from the surface of the mountains.
The moon is also a very silent world, for sound waves can only travel through air. But beyond
the broken horizon, you see a friendly sight. Our earth is shining more brightly than the stars.
From this distance, it looks like an immense ball, coloured blue and green and brown.

Reading Comprehension
Unit Seven Magdi and the Dolphin
Section One: Reading Comprehension
1- Dolphins: Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
Dolphins are mammals although they live in the sea. They are members of a group of
15
mammals called cetaceans or whales. Whales are divided into 2 groups. One group lacks teeth.
Most large whales belong to this first group. Dolphins belong to the second group which has
teeth.Dolphins live mainly in warm, tropical seas in the Open Ocean, bays, and coral reefs.
They join together in herds or groups. Sometimes as many as one million live together but
they usually live in smaller herds. River dolphins can be seen in groups of only three or four.
Dolphins range in size from five feet to thirteen feet. They have black and white backs to
help them blend into colorless deep seas. Their bellies are light-colored and help them avoid
being seen by the sharks below. The light color blends with the sky-bright seas as the sharks
look up at them. The dolphin has a torpedo shape, long and thin. It can move quickly through
the water as the flippers help it steer. The dolphin doesn't have bones. The fins keep the
dolphin going in a straight line. Both the fin and flippers sense objects that may be in the way.
Strong muscles along the side of a dolphin move the tail up and down. Their skin is smooth
and has no scales. A thick layer of blubber is under their skin. This layer keeps them warm. A
dolphin's eyes move independently. One is located on each side of the head. They can see all
around and straight ahead. They do not have a sense of smell.
Dolphins communicate with their voices and have good hearing. With these abilities they
can catch food and speak with other dolphins. To find prey they make a clicking sound. The
sound of this clicking bounces off anything in its path. The dolphins hear the echo of the
clicking and know where prey is located. This method of finding prey is called echolocation.
Dolphins can also communicate with their friends by sounds. Certain sounds send different
messages. Dolphins will go to help another dolphin if they hear a cry for aid. Each dolphin has
its own specific sound. It can be identified by other dolphins. Being able to communicate well
with others is a sign of great intelligence.Dolphins swim between three and seven miles an
hour. They can go as fast as twenty-two miles per hour. They usually dive from ten to one-
hundred fifty feet to find food. A dive could last up to fifteen minutes. The most common type
of dolphin near the shore is the bottlenose dolphin. Their backs are grey and their underbellies
white or pink. They grow to about eight feet. They weigh about two hundred pounds. In
summary, dolphins are mammals although they live in the sea. They are one of two groups of
whales. Many larger whales belong to the group which has no teeth. Dolphins belong to the
second group of whales and have teeth.

In Egypt, the tourism industry has come to hold a position of great importance lately. It is felt
that it could help increase the national income. In some European countries, tourism has
brought in millions of dollars yearly, although they lack the natural and historical attractions
we have in Egypt. We could, for instance, establish tourist villages for children on the Red Sea.
We could teach fishing, swimming, diving and sailing there. Another good idea would be a
village in the New Valley for horse riding. And what about villages for people with health
problems like rheumatism? The warm dry climate of Aswan and Helwan would help them get
better. Our tourist today wants efficient and friendly service. He would probably prefer to try
our samples of our local food rather than to eat the international meals, which are served, in
some places. It must also be remembered that most tourists nowadays are seldom rich. Many of
them are students or hardworking employees. So what is needed is not expensive hotels but
clean comfortable places to sleep and eat in at reasonable prices. This, too, would encourage

Section Three: Grammar
Direct and Indirect
There are two ways of relating what a person has said: direct and indirect.
Remarks thus repeated are placed between inverted commas, and a comma is placed
immediately before the remark. Direct speech is found in conversations in books, in plays and
in quotations.
In indirect speech we give the exact meaning of a remark or a speech, without necessarily
using the speaker’s exact words:
There is no comma after say in indirect speech. That can usually be omitted after say and tell +
object. But it should be kept after other verbs: complain, explain, object, point out, protest etc.
Indirect speech is normally used when conversation is reported verbally, though direct speech
is sometimes here to give a more dramatic effect.
When we turn direct speech into indirect, some changes are usually necessary.
23
PRONOUNS AND ADJECTIVES: CHANGES NECESSARY
A. First and second person pronouns and possessive adjectives normally change to the third
person except when the speaker is reporting his own words. (I = he, she; me = him, her; my =
his, her; mine = his, hers; we = they...)
She said, “he’s my son”. ➔ She said that he was her son.
“I’m ill”, she said. ➔ She said that she was ill.

Chatterboxes
Section One: Reading Comprehension:
1- Read the passage “Animal Communication” carefully and answer these questions.
Can animals talk? We know that parrots and some other birds can imitate sounds. Alex, an
African grey parrot who lives in Boston, can say eighty different words. However, most scientists
believe that parrots cannot understand language.
Animal Communication
In the 1960 s scientists in America tried to teach chimpanzees to talk. They soon realized that the
animals did not have the right kind of vocal organs. In 1966, scientists started teaching American
Sign Language (ASL) to a one-year-old chimp called Washoe. ASL is used by deaf and dumb
people and uses signs instead of sounds. Four years later, Washoe knew 132 words. Majority of
these words were nouns or verbs. Most importantly, she and other chimps could put signs
together to communicate ideas, like ‘want food’ and ‘time drink.’ Washoe even worked out how
to put ‘dirty’ in front of peoples’ names when she was angry with them.
In 1972, Dr. Francine Patterson started working with a baby gorilla, called Koko. Koko
eventually learned about 1,600 different words. Dr. Patterson used to teach Koko sign language
with children’s picture books. Koko’s favourite story was ‘The Three Kittens.’ She used to look
at it when she was on her own and sign to herself. Every year Koko had a birthday party. When
Dr. Patterson asked her what a birthday was, Koko signed: ‘Eat-drink-get old.’ One year she
41
signed to Koko, ‘What present do you want for your birthday?’ Koko signed back, ‘Cat.’
Dr. Patterson bought her a toy cat, but Koko became very angry.
Six months later, a friend turned up with some kittens. Koko wanted one. She signed, ‘Love that.’
She picked out a kitten without a tail and even chose the kitten’s name, Ball. She looked
after Ball like a baby and spent hours cleaning it and playing games. Ball was a
very aggressive little cat and often bit Koko. But she never struck the kitten back.
The next December a car ran over Ball. Koko was very distressed. Later, when somebody signed,
‘What happened to your cat?’ Koko replied, ‘Sleep Ball.’ Dr. Patterson tried hard to find Koko
another kitten. Koko wanted one without a tail. At last, she found a tailless kitten and handed him
over to Koko. She kissed him and held in her arms. ‘Baby,’ he signed.
Q 4. What did Dr Patterson bring Koko as a gift? Why was Koko angry?

Reading Comprehension
4- Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
52
Many people like to collect things, stamps, for example some stamp collections are very
valuable. Usually the fewer the number of people who have a stamp in their collections, the more
valuable the stamp is. Some very rich people collect works of art. They often pay millions of
pounds for a painting by a famous artist. These paintings become usually more valuable when
time passes, so people buy them hoping to sell them at a later date for more than they paid for
them. We do not have to be rich to start collecting things. There are many interesting thing all
around us that are useful to collect. Some people, for example, collect menus from the
restaurants, or even bus tickets. Such collections may not be worth a lot of money, but they may
be very valuable to historians in the future. They may tell them many things about people lived in
the 20th and early 21st centuries. The best way to start a collection is to choose something we are
interested in. This may be something to do with sport, music, books- or anything else. It does not
matter what it is as long as we have enough money to buy it, or the time to look for it. If we
collect the same things that a friend of us is also collecting, we can sometimes them something
that we don’t want from our collection, and they can give us something that we do want from
them. This kind of collecting with friends can be fun. Many collections have been started by
people for fun, or just for interest. Years later, they have been worth a great deal of money.

Joe and Helen had two small children, six and four years old. They never wanted to go to bed.
Helen was always complaining to Joe about this, but as he always came home after they had gone
to bed, he was unable to help, except weekends. Joe thought he was a good singer but his voice
wasn’t that nice at all. He decided that if he sang to the children when they went to bed, it would
help them relax and go to sleep. He did this every Saturday and Sunday night until he heard his
son whisper to his younger sister, “if you pretend that you’re asleep, he will stop singing”.

The Development of Eyeglasses
Do you know when eyeglasses were
first invented? Take a guess! They
were actually invented nearly
800 years ago in Italy. They were quite
a simple design then. They were two
glass circles and they sat on the nose.
In the 16th century, eyeglasses were
improved so that different types of
glass would help people who couldn’t
see things close-up or further away.
But they still sat on the nose. They still
fell off the face very easily. In 1730, in London, Edward Scarlett invented “arms”
for glasses. These went over the ears and kept the glasses on the face. Suddenly,
eyeglasses became very popular. Sunglasses were another important development.
Movie stars began to wear them in the 1930s and people discovered they were
useful to wear in bright sunshine. The invention of eyeglasses has included many
steps that created the eyeglasses we see and use today.
Answer the following questions:
1- What is the first important event in the development of eyeglasses?
……………………………………………………………………………………
2- What is the second important event in the development of eyeglasses?

3- What is the third important event in the development of eyeglasses?

Underwater Buildings
What if we could build entire cities under the water? Is it possible, or just a dream? Ian Koblick
decided it was possible. In 1972, he built an underwater structure called La Chalupa. It was used
for research under the ocean. There are now three similar buildings underwater where people can
study the ocean and even get married! The difficulty with building underwater is that safety
is so important because the water must be kept out of the building. It is a challenge to get the
right balance of air, temperature, and humidity, and it is also difficult to find and use an
appropriate source of energy. This means that it becomes very expensive to build such buildings.
However, research into this fascinating idea is continuing. Perhaps one day, you’ll live under the
ocean!

Money is used for buying and selling goods. In the past, anybody could exchange a sheep, for
example, for anything in the marketplace that is considered to be of equal value.
Now, we have money, piece of metal or paper which bears numbers showing its value.Which is easy
to carry. We can buy our goods with money. Now we don’t exchange like old days.

the stage workers sees a man in a black evening coat, but he has the head of a dead man, with a
yellow face and no nose. People hear a voice in another room, but the room is empty.

the donkey was mad, and he shouted, "Help! Help!" Men came running in with sticks, and they
