PRACTICE 1

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

The holidays were here again. Six whole weeks of fun and laughter were in
store for Maggie and Jean.
There were so many things that they wanted to do. They wanted to go to the
beach to build their sandcastles, explore the jungle behind the old factory and visit
the dog pound at the other end of town. Mrs. Waters, Maggie’s neighbour, had also
invited the girls to tea. They were also
expected to paint Jean’s dog house as it was
getting old and dreary-looking. With so many
plans, the girls could not wait to get started.
The next morning, they woke up and Jean
went over to Maggie’s house. It was too
beautiful a day to be wasted indoors, so they
decided that they simply had to either go to the
beach or explore the jungle that day. Jean
preferred going to the beach as she wanted to pick seashells for her collection.
Maggie would rather go to the jungle as it was shady and cool. But they realized that
they had to choose one of the two as there was not enough time for them to do both
in one day. If they went to the beach, they could enjoy the sun and sea as it was a
clear day. If they went to the jungle, the trees would be blocking their view of the sun.
However, the beach would be crowded that day as it was a Saturday and also the
first day of the holidays. They might not be able to find a place to build their
sandcastles. Finally, the girls made a choice and spent and wonderful day together

PRACTICE 2

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

Myopia is a condition which affects the eye. A myopic person is also said to be
short-sighted. They can only see clearly objects which are near while those which
are far appear blurry.

Myopia is quite a common eye defect

in many people. Even though babies are
rarely affected, children are getting myopia
at a younger age. To correct short-
sightedness, a myopic person has to wear
corrective lenses, usually in the form of
spectacles. The lenses of the spectacles
help a myopic person to achieve normal vision.

Nowadays, there is an increasing number of people who have made a switch to

contact lenses. These lenses, which are round, thin films of plastic or glass, are
actually put onto the eyes and float on the moisture that is always present in the
eyes. These lenses, unlike those in spectacles, actually touch the eyes, hence the
name contact lenses.

PRACTICE 3

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

Long ago, there were no post offices or postmen. Letters were delivered by
hand. Some people even had to run from one place to another, just to deliver letters!
Due to the distance they had to cover, some letters would probably reach the
addressee several weeks or even months later. Now, we have the convenience of
dropping a letter in a post box, and it will reach any destination in the world in a
matter of days.

Twice a day, the postman goes to these post boxes. He empties the letters out
of the boxes and takes them to the post office. There, a machine stamps all the
letters with postmarks on the postage stamps.

After this, the letters are sorted. All letters addressed to a certain part of the
country are put into one box, while others which are addressed to other parts are put
in some other boxes.

After this has been done, postmen who are deployed to take charge of the
different areas will put the letters into the mailbags. Then, they will ride on their
bicycles or scooters to deliver the letters to our homes.

This has remained as the

A merchant kept a bird in a cage. He was going to India, the land from where
the bird came. He asked the bird whether it would like him to bring anything back for
it. The bird asked for its freedom, but was refused. So, it asked the merchant to visit
a jungle in India and inform the free birds there what had happened to it.

The merchant did so, and no sooner had he told them about the bird and how
he kept it in a cage than a wild bird just like his own at home fell out of a tree and
landed on the ground near his feet. The merchant thought that the bird must be a
relative of his bird and the shocking news he brought must have caused its death.

When he got home, the bird asked him whether

he had brought good news from India. “No,” said the
merchant, “I fear that my news is bad. One of your
relatives collapsed and fell at my feet when I
mentioned your captivity.”

As soon as these words were spoken, the

the cage. “The news of its relative’s death has killed
it too,” thought the merchant. Sorrowfully, he picked up the bird and put it on the

“Now you know,” the bird said, “that what you thought was disaster was in fact

Codes and ciphers are ways in which messages are made secret. If you and
your friends wish to share a secret, you can write it in codes or ciphers so that only
you and your friends understand. In a code, each word is written as a secret code
word or code number. In a cipher, each letter is changed.

Codes and ciphers have played an

important role in the history of the world.
For example, in World War II, the
Americans broke Japan’s most important
naval code and got enough information to
destroy a powerful Japanese fleet. Julius
Caesar, the Roman ruler about two
thousand years ago, used ciphers in
sending secret messages to his generals. If the enemies got to know of Julius
Caesar’s plans, the battles could not be won. In the sixteenth century, codes and
ciphers were very widely used among scientists. They wrote messages to one
another in code so that no one else would learn of their scientific studies.

In these modern times, codes and ciphers are in great use. Governments use
more complicated ones to safeguard their highly confidential information from being
deciphered should they fall into the wrong hands. Storekeepers use codes to mark
their goods to keep track of their stock. Sometimes, personal letters are also written
in codes.

Of all the places in the world, I judge my home to be a paradise. As the old
saying goes, “East or West, my home is the best.” My home offers affection and
security. I live with my parents, my elder brother and younger sister.

I belong to a middle-class family. My father is a supervisor in a factory and my

mother is a production operator in the same factory. We have a four-room flat which
is well-decorated. The northern corner has a television set which is connected to a
video recorder. Some ten feet from that end, there is a mahogany sofa set with an
ornamented tea-table in front.

Our kitchen is fully equipped with cabinets and a small store. A small dining
table with four chairs are placed near the sink. A big refrigerator stands silent in the
corner. Our home has been decorated with many memorable souvenirs which
remind us of our visits to different places. Our home has three bedrooms. The
master bedroom is occupied by my parents. I share the second bedroom with my
younger sister. The third bedroom is solely occupied by my brother. Sometimes, it is
used as a guest room for our relatives from villages. They
usually visit us during festival seasons. Our family is
a small and happy family where every member
has consideration for the needs and comforts of
the others. All of us do our share of
housework. Most mornings, the place looks
busy as everyone rushes about doing one’s
morning chores. We normally have a light and
quick breakfast. Every evening, my family will

answers must be based on the passage.

The goldfish is one of the most attractive pets in the world. It is relatively easy
to look after.

First, you must decide on the size of your aquarium. It must be the right size
and shape for the number of fishes you decide to keep. Having too many fishes in
the aquarium will stunt the growth of the fish and also cause water pollution.

Goldfish grows best at a temperature of between 18 degrees Celsius to 22

degrees Celsius. The fish requires a good filter, food and oxygen. Plants in the
aquarium help provide food and oxygen for the fish.
Aquarium plants can be bought from pet shops.

When you have satisfied the conditions

mentioned, remember not to overfeed the fish. It can
get sick from over feeding. Young goldfish can be fed
three times a day. Mature goldfish should be fed only

Rice is a vital part of our diet. It is the basic diet for more than half of the people
in the world. Some people eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There are over 7,000 known varieties of rice. Rice belongs to the group of
cereals. The rice we eat comes from the seeds of rice plants.

Most rice seeds are small

and oval-shaped. They have a
tough, protective covering
called the husk. Inside this
brown covering is a grain of
rice. The grain is again
covered by a protective skin
called the bran. This is the rice
that we eat.

Most people prefer to eat white rice. That is why newly harvested rice are milled
in order to get rid of the tough outer skins. Milling is the process by which the husks
are removed from the grains of rice. Once removed, we get the grains of rice which
are sold in shops.

answers must be based on the passage.

An exciting incident occurred when I was ten years old. My family was staying
in a house in the countryside. My room was facing the back of a hill. It had a
wonderful view of trees and lush green vegetation. The breeze that blew into my
room was sweet and cooling.

One night, I woke up to a suffocating smell. I found that it was smoke. I looked
out my window and saw a giant column of smoke blowing towards my room. It came
from the chicken coop. It smelled surprisingly of something cooking. I ran out of my
room to alert my parents but they were already awake. We all ran to the chicken
coop located some distance away from the house.

All the chickens were flying

around frantically. Some of the
older hens were violently
flapping their wings. The poor
chickens were trying to escape
through the wire netting. The
fire had caught the left side of
the huge chicken coop. My
father hacked the door of the
coop with an axe to let the
chickens out.

A few minutes later, the sound of the fire-engine could be heard. The firemen
managed to put out the fire. It seemed that one of the light bulbs had exploded. A
spark had settled on the dry bedding of straw and started the fire. Luckily, only a few
chickens were burnt while the rest were singed here and there. As a result, we had
chickens for our meals the next few days.

PRACTICE 13

A Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

In the fourteenth century, there was a small Malay settlement on the banks of
the present Singapore River. The settlement was called Temasek which meant “Sea
Town”. The people in the settlement were mostly fishermen who built their attap-
houses on wooden stilts along the muddy coast and river banks. Later, Temasek
became known as “Singapura”. “Singa” means lion and “pura” means town or city.
The name was given by a Hindu prince, who on landing on the island, saw a strange
animal which he thought was a lion. He therefore named the place “Lion City”.

The history of modern Singapore really began in February 1819, when an

Englishman called Stamford Raffles landed on the island. Although most of the
island was then covered with dense jungle and mangrove swamps, Raffles saw that
there was a good safe anchorage for ships close to the shore. The mouth of the
Singapore River would make a good
harbour for small cargo boats. The island
was in a very good position, being on the
main trade route from China to India.
Realising all these advantages, Raffles
set up a trading post near the mouth of
the Singapore River. In a very short time,
Singapore became a great trading centre
to South East Asia. In fact, the position
of Singapore is so important that it is
sometimes referred to as the “Gateway
to the East”.

The port of Singapore is an extremely busy port. It is an entreport, importing

products from one country, assembling and processing the products and then
exporting them to another country. The main trading partners of Singapore include
the USA, West Malaysia, Japan and New Zealand. Ships also call at Singapore from
all over the world for trade and refueling. At present, Singapore is the largest port in
the world after Rotterdam.

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

It was a cold winter day in 1910 when Mr. Elias Disney said to his family, “I’m
going to sell the farm.”

Nine-year-old Walt gasped. He loved the apple farm near Marceline, Missouri,
where he had lived since he was four. The country was beautiful. Besides, Walt liked
to draw the animals – horses, cows, chickens, ducks and pigs. Drawing was about
the only fun he had, because he had so many chores to do. “Please don’t sell the
farm!” Walt begged. His sister, Ruth, also pleaded with her father.

Mr. Disney silenced the children with a look. He ruled his household with an
iron fist and a ready whip. Only three years earlier, two of his sons, Ray and Herbert,
had run away from home. Walt and seventeen-year-old Roy were now the only boys
at home.

“Make some signs for advertising the place,” Mr. Disney ordered Roy. “Then
you and Walter tack them up on trees and telephone poles.”

Walt, hoping for sympathy,

looked fearfully at his mother,
although he feared it would do no
good. Mrs. Disney never went
against her husband. The children
did not know whether she agreed
with their father or whether she was
afraid to speak her mind. Roy put
his arm round Walt and led them out of the room. He always treated his younger
brother with kindness and understanding. “Pa has to sell the farm,” Roy explained
kindly. “The price of apples has dropped so low that he can’t afford to hire workers
and he can’t run the farm with just you and me to help. Besides, he isn’t well.”

PRACTICE 16

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

Cats have excellent vision. They can recognize their owners at a distance of
more than thirty meters. Their favorite color is red.

The cats’ ears are constructed in such a way that the animals can listen in all
directions without moving their head. The animal can hear much better than man. A
sleeping cat can hear a mouse seventeen meters away. A fully awake cat
recognizes the sound at twenty-two meters.

A cat is able to pin-point the location of a

mouse hidden in tall grasses by the use of its ears
alone. From a distance of up to two meters away, it
jumps high into their air and pounces on the mouse.
Cats are successful in catching the mouse about
sixty per cent of the time.

A cat’s horny whiskers appear above its mouth. These whiskers are very
useful. They help the cat to keep perfect balance, even when it is walking on a very
narrow fence. When the cat is transporting a mouse, the whiskers fold around the
prey.

A cat stalks and catches mice alone. If two cats stalking the same mouse in tall
grasses leap at the same time, they may accidentally collide into each other.
Otherwise, cats usually like the company of other cats. In the evenings, they are
quite likely to be found in groups.

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

The bat is a remarkable creature. Its face is a cross between a cat and a rat. It
has thumbs, toes, tails, big ears and is covered with fur.
There are about nine hundred species of bats in the world. These can be
divided into two main types. They are the microbats and the megabats. Megabats
feed on flowers, pollen and fruits. Microbats eat a variety of food such as insects,
fishes, and fruits.
A few microbats like the taste of blood. People have associated the name
“vampire” with blood-sucking ghosts
for a long time. When these blood
sucking bats were discovered, they
were named the “vampire bats”.
Vampire bats attack chickens, horses,
cattle and other large animals. These
bats are small. They are even smaller
than a man’s hand. They can only be
found in the American tropics.
Bats only fly out during the night. During the day, they hang upside down in
dark places such as caves.
Bats are edible creatures. In Western Samoa, people consider the bat a

PRACTICE 18

Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow. Your
answers must be based on the passage.

Prema had a little garden at the back of her house. She grew peas, tomatoes,
carrots, and cabbages. One afternoon, while she was picking some peas for dinner,
she heard a chirping sound. She thought it was a bird’s call. She looked up and
around. Prema did not see any bird around. Then she heard the sound again. It
seemed to come from somewhere near her feet.

She looked down. There was a big toad with a puffed-out throat. It was
frantically trying to escape from a tiny grass snake. The snake was nipping at its
heels like a little naughty child teasing a fat man.

The scene was both pathetic and ridiculous. The toad could easily have
swallowed the little “whippersnapper” in a wink. As
Prema tossed the snake into the bushes, she saw
the toad cheep despairingly and roll over on its
back. She thought it had died of fright. For several
minutes it was still, appearing not even to be
breathing. Then it stretched up, flipped over and
hopped away.

It moved so quickly that Prema did not have a chance to see in which direction
the toad had hopped. She had hopped to examine the little creature more closely.

Prema searched the garden. She saw more than a dozen toads snapping up
flea, beetles and gulping up grasshoppers. The toads ate insects that destroy plants,
