TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T

1984 Automatic Transmission Servicing CHRYSLER CORP. FWD

LUBRICATION
SERVICE INTERVALS

Light duty service requires transmission servicing (fluid drained and refilled, bands adjusted) every 37,500
miles. Under normal heavy duty conditions, service transmission every 24,000 miles. Vehicles subjected to
severe heavy duty conditions should have transmission serviced every 12,000 miles.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

1. Check fluid level with vehicle parked on level surface, engine idling at normal operating temperature and
parking brake applied. Move selector lever through all gear ranges, ending in "P" or "N".
2. Fluid level should be between "ADD" and "OK" marks on dipstick. Check condition of fluid for
contamination or burned smell.

RECOMMENDED FLUID

Use only Dextron II type automatic transmission fluid.

FLUID CAPACITY

NOTE: Use capacities listed in table as a guide. Correct fluid level should always be
determined by marks on dipstick.

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

Application Refill Quantity Dry Fill Quantity
A-419/A-470 4 qts. (3.8L) 19.0 qts. (8.6)

DRAINING & REFILLING

1. Loosen oil pan bolts. Tap lightly at one corner to break loose and allow fluid to drain. Remove pan.
Install new filter on bottom of valve body and tighten retaining screws. Clean oil pan. Clean magnet (if
used), and place over boss in right front corner of pan. Install pan with new gasket.
2. Refill transmission. Start engine and allow to run at idle for at least 2 minutes. With engine at curb idle
and parking brake applied, move shift selector lever through all ranges, ending in "P" or "N". Add fluid
up to "ADD" mark on dipstick. Do not overfill. Recheck fluid level when transmission reaches normal
operating temperature.

1. Locate kickdown band adjusting screw at left side (top front) of transmission case. Loosen adjusting
screw lock nut and back off 5 turns. Ensure adjusting screw turns freely in case.
2. Using Wrench (C-3380-A) with Adapter (C-3705), tighten adjusting screw to 48 INCH lbs. (5 N.m). If
adapter is not used, tighten adjusting screw to 72 INCH lbs. (8 N.m).
3. Back off front adjusting screw. See KICKDOWN BAND ADJUSTMENT . Hold adjusting screw and
tighten lock nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m).

LOW-REVERSE (REAR) BAND

1. Drain transaxle fluid and remove oil pan. Apply 30 psi (2.1 kg/cm2 ) air pressure to low-reverse servo and
measure gap between band ends. If less than .080" (2.0 mm), band is excessively worn and should be
replaced.
2. To adjust band, loosen lock nut approximately 5 turns and tighten adjusting screw to 44 INCH lbs. (5
N.m). Back off adjusting screw. See LOW-REVERSE BAND ADJUSTMENT . Hold screw in position
and tighten lock nut.

THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE

1. Ensure carburetor is not on fast idle cam (disconnect choke if necessary). Loosen adjustment bracket lock
screw. Ensure bracket slides freely along full length of adjustment. See Fig. 1.
2. Slide bracket to the left (toward engine) to the limit of its travel. Release bracket and move throttle lever
fully to the right against its internal stop and tighten lock screw. This completes adjustment. Cable
backlash is automatically removed.
3. To check cable freedom of operation, move transaxle throttle lever forward and slowly release. Ensure
cable returns to full rear position.

GEARSHIFT LINKAGE

Place shift selector in "P" position. Loosen lock screw on cable adjusting bracket on transaxle. Move shift lever
on transaxle all the way to rear detent (Park) position and hold. Tighten lock screw.

NOTE: If linkage cable is disconnected from transmission lever for any reason, always
use a new plastic grommet when reassembling linkage.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH

1. With transmission linkage properly adjusted, switch should allow starter operation in Park and Neutral
only. To test switch, remove wire connector and test for continuity between center pin of switch and case.
Continuity should exist only when transmission is in "P" or "N".
2. Check for continuity between 2 outer pins. Continuity should exist with transmission in Reverse, only.
There should be no continuity between either outside pin and the transmission case.

NOTE: Ensure gearshift linkage is properly adjusted before replacing a switch

that tests bad.

3. To replace, remove switch from case and allow fluid to drain. Move selector lever to Park and Neutral
positions and check that switch operating fingers are centered in switch opening. Install new switch and
seal. Retest switch for continuity and add transmission fluid.
