AM 305 Tutorial 1

Question 1:
The moisture content at field capacity of a clay loam soil is 28% by weight while that at permanent wilting
point is 14% by weight. Root zone depth is 1 m and the bulk density is 1.2 g/cm3. Calculate the net and
gross depth of irrigation required if the irrigation efficiency is 0.7. If the peak et is 7.5 mm/day, determine
the shortest irrigation interval.
Question 2:
In a cropped field, the following data were observed; Moisture content at field capacity (weight basis) =
36%, Current moisture content (weight basis) = 24%, Bulk density of soil = 1.5g/cc, Effective root zone
depth= 0.8m, Conveyance efficiency = 80%, Application efficiency = 90%, To bring soil moisture content
to field capacity, the depth of irrigation will be?
Question 3:
Determine the project irrigation efficiency for a scheme with a long canal system. The canals are
constructed in heavy clay and the irrigation method is furrow irrigation. The conveyance efficiency of the
system is 80% and the field application efficiency is 60%.

Question 4:
A cropped field with peak crop evapotranspiration of 5mm/day and rooting depth of 0.915m has to be
irrigated. The soil in this field is loam with field capacity soil moisture content of 21% by volume and
wilting point water content of 7% by volume. The irrigation efficiency is 70% and irrigation starts with
50% depletion of soil water reservoir. Determine;

a) The total available soil water (moisture) capacity of the soil

b) The gross depth of water to be applied during each irrigation
c) The irrigation interval.

Question 5:
A 12-hectare field is to be irrigated with a sprinkler system. The root zone depth is 0.9 m and the field
capacity of the soil is 28% while the permanent wilting point is 17% by weight. The soil bulk density is
1.36 g/cm and the water application efficiency is 70%. The soil is to be irrigated when 50% of the available
water has depleted. The peak evapotranspiration is 5.0 mm/day and the system is to be run for 10 hours in
a day. Determine;

a) The net irrigation depth

b) Gross irrigation depth
c) Irrigation interval
d) Area to be irrigated per day

Question 6:
45 m3 of water was pumped into a farm distribution system. 38 m3 of water is delivered to a turn out (at
head ditch) which is 2 km from the well. Compute the Conveyance Efficiency.
Question 7:
Delivery of 10 m3/s to a 32ha farm is continued for 4 hours. Soil probing after irrigation indicates that 30
cm of water has been stored in the root zone. Compute the Application Efficiency.
Question 8:
The net irrigation dose (d) for an area of 1 ha is 19.8 mm, i.e., 198 m3. The water delivered during
irrigation is 280 m3. What is the application efficiency?
Question 9:
In an irrigated plot, the net irrigation requirement of a crop is found to be 14.9cm, the application efficiency
is 80% and the water conveyance efficiency is 70%. What is the gross irrigation requirement?
Question 10:
In an irrigation project with F.C = 38%, PWP = 18%, Rz= 90cm, AD=50%, Cu=4mm/day, on the 20th of
January morning the moisture content in the soil was found to be 26%. On the 25th of January the effective
rainfall of 10mm was recorded. On the 28th of January (evening) water was applied to full irrigation, 10%
of the net depth was runoff. Find;

a) Gross irrigation water

b) Irrigation efficiency
c) Initial water content on the 31st of January (evening).
