AM-305 Tutorial 2:

Question 1:

In a sprinkler irrigation system, the lateral spacing along the mainline is 20m and sprinkler spacing
along the laterals is 15m. The application rate for fulfilling the peak demand of the proposed crop
should be 8 mm/day. Find the discharge rate per sprinkler.

Question 2:

In a sprinkler irrigation system, the required total capacity of the system is 0.5m3/s. determine the
pump capacity. Assume that head loss in pipe and bends and velocity head required to be 3m.

Question 3:

A solid set permanent micro-irrigation system is installed in a vegetable field of 1 ha area. The
spacing between the micro sprinklers is 2.5 m and spacing between laterals is 5m. the peak
evapotranspiration rate is 10 mm/day. The application efficiency is 80%. Irrigation system
operates 5 hours in a day. The total operating head of the pump is 30m at 65% pump efficiency,
what will be the horse power of the pump?

Question 4:

A sprinkler system consists of two 192 m long laterals. On each lateral, 16 sprinklers are located
at an interval of 12 m. the spacing between the laterals is 10 m. What is the required system
capacity in L/s if the application rate is 1 cm/h.?

Question 5:

A 10ha cropped field (Peak Crop evapotranspiration is 5 mm/day and rooting depth of 0.915) has
been irrigated by a hand moved portable sprinkler irrigation system. The soil in this field is loam
with field capacity soil moisture content of 21% by volume and wilting point water content of 7%
by volume. Sprinklers each discharging 30L/min, are used at 12.2 m spacing and lateral spacing
is 12.2m. the irrigation efficiency is 70% and irrigation starts with 50% depletion of soil water
reservoir.

Determine:

a) The total available soil water moisture capacity of the soil.

b) The gross depth of water to be applied during each irrigation
c) The irrigation cycle.
d) The quantity of water needed from the source if the sprinkler system operates 12hrs/day
during the irrigation cycle.
e) The rate of application of irrigation water.

Question 6:

A pump is to be selected for a sprinkler system which will be required to produce 12.0m of head
which does not include friction losses of 2.0 m. plots of 20.0 ha in area are to be irrigated by the
system at one time and 8 hours pumping will be required per 20 ha plot during each irrigation
interval. The peak period crop water requirement is 10mm/day and the irrigation frequency is 10
days. Spray/drift losses are estimated to be 6% and the design percolation are 19%. Compute the
pump horsepower required if the efficiency of the pump is 90%.

Question 7:

A lateral runs down slope on a ground surface with constant slope 0.01 m/m. the actual friction
loss in the lateral is 0.0085m/m and the lateral length is 274m. a 1.2m riser is required for the crop.
Compute the design operating pressure for the sprinkler nozzle if the pressure head required at the
mainline is 3448Kpa.

Question 8:

A field has 22 cm of available water. The management allowable deficit is 40%. During the peak
periods, the crop evapotranspiration is 8 mm/day. The grower wants to allow one day without
operation for each interval during peak periods and operated two set per day. The hand move
sprinkler irrigation system has 1180 m of main line with valves (hydrants) at both ends and every
20m. how many laterals are required to irrigated this field.?

Question 9:

A small centrifugal pump discharges water at a rate of 20,000 litres per hour and works for 10
hours each day. Estimate the area commanded by the pimp if the average depth of irrigation is 100
mm and the irrigation interval is 14 days.
Question 10:

If the conventional peak ETc is 8.0 mm/day, and 75% of the area is shaded by trees in an orchard,
determine the design ETc rate, volume of water required per tree per day and the application rate
in L/h per tree for a drip irrigation system. Assume EU=0.92, a tree spacing of 3x6m, 20h/day
operation and irrigation interval of 2 days. Also, assume a course textured soil of low density, a
1.5m root zone and 40% of the area is to be irrigated.

Question 11:

Determine the emission uniformity of a drip system section that uses drip emitter with coefficient
of discharge (k) = 0.3, exponent (x) = 0.57 and coefficient of variation (Cv) = 0.06. Two emitters
are used for each plant. The average pressure is 120 kPa and minimum pressure is 90 kPa.
