    Main idea: The main idea of the Hunger Games is to show how people, no matter
    how big or small, can overcome any problem they put their mind to. It also shows the
    incredible cruelty of dictators and how people can mindlessly go along with things just
    because others may be doing it.
    Summary: The Hunger Games is a novel that unfolds in Panem, an apocalyptic
    world. The story is centered on a 16-year-old girl, Katniss Everdeen and her struggle
    for survival in dystopia. Each year, as a punishment for the failed rebellion by District
    13, the 12 Panem Districts are forced to pay tribute to the ruthless Capitol regime. The
    story begins on the day of reaping at District 12. A day that each district is required to
    offer two tributes, a boy and a girl aged 12 to 18 years to participate in the games. This
    was going to be the 74th hunger games.
    In a twist of fate, Prim Katniss’ 12-year-old sister is selected as one of the tributes.
    Having lost their father at a young age, she isn’t going to let her mother lose her too as
    she swore always to protect them. She volunteers to take her sister’s place, and
    together with the baker’s son, Peeta Mellark they represent district 12. What follows is
    a series of events that will put Katniss in the spotlight both as a source of hope for the
    oppressed and as an enemy of the Capitol.
    Her feelings for Peeta will be exploited for the games, which are aired across all the
    districts. She will make new friends, enemies, inspire and give hope to many people in
    Panem thanks to her performance in the games. What makes the hunger games a more
    thrilling story is the games win or die rule. After Rue's death, one o her friends in the
    game,the announcer, wanting to bring back the romance story between Peeta and
    Katniss, changes the rules of the game: two people from a single district can now win.
    Before she can stop herself, Katniss calls out Peeta's name. Katniss goes hunting for
    Peeta and eventually finds him. He is wounded and camouflaged in the muddy bank of
    a stream. She nurses him back to health and realizes that by playing up the romance
    angle, they can get gifts from mutated killing machines. Finally, Katniss shoots Cato
    and he falls into the pack. They've won, right? Wrong. An announcer comes back on
    and says the rules have changed back: only one winner allowed.

    Katniss and Peeta can't kill each other, so they make a show of taking poisonous
    berries in an act of double suicide. Fortunately, the announcer comes back on before
    they can kill themselves, and says that they win.
    Katniss and Peeta keep up the star-crossed lovers routine for the post-games reunion
    and interview, knowing that this is the only way to keep from being punished by the
    Capitol for the rebellious trick with the poisonous berries. Eventually Katniss figures
    out that Peeta really is in love with her – he wasn't acting at all – and he figures out
    that she wasn't ever in love with him. As the train pulls into District 12, they put on a
    happy face for the camera, take each other's hands and step onto the platform.
