Purpose of Maintenance

-Proper maintenance of a ship is the right way to extend the life

cycle of its components and reduce degradation or even failure of
the machinery. Vessel upkeep must follow all safety and
prevention regulations, which helps to achieve optimal reliability
across all systems.

Is maintenance onboard ship is important and why?

-THE IMPORTANCE OF ONBOARD MAINTENANCE FOR SHIPS.

Maintenance of deck coatings on ships is important for structural
corrosion protection, and also for maintaining the appearance of the
vessels and providing a safe environment for passengers and crew.

Why is maintenance important as a management

tool in maritime operations?

-A comprehensive ship maintenance plan is especially crucial for cruise

ships to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, maintain the vessel's
longevity, comply with regulations, optimize operational efficiency,
uphold the reputation of the cruise line, and demonstrate environmental
responsibility.

-Maintenance is one thing that keeps any mechanical equipment or

machinery going. Weather it is a small machine or a large structure,
efficient maintenance can help with prolonged life and favorable
outcome. On a ship, maintenance is one thing that keeps machinery up
to date and is smooth running condition. In this article we will learn as to
how maintenance is being carried out on a ship.

It is for this reason important to plan the maintainence of the machinery

in advance so that the machinery can be overhauled and maintained
properly. Generally second engineer is required to plan the schedule of
maintenance on a ship.

Efficient planning and adequate usage of equipments is the key to

productive maintenance. In this article we will have a look at the main
types of maintenance procedures followed on a ship.
Types of Maintenance Procedures

1) Preventive or Scheduled Maintenance System

It is famously known as the PMS or Planned Maintenance System. In

this type of system, the maintenance is carried out as per the running
hours like 4000 hrs, 8000 hrs, etc., or by the calendar intervals like 6
monthly, yearly, etc. of the machinery. The maintenance is carried out
irrespective of the condition of the machinery. The parts have to be
replaced if it is written in the schedule, even if they can be still used.

2) Corrective or Breakdown Maintenance

In this system, the maintenance is carried out when the machinery

breaks down. This is the reason it is known as the breakdown
maintenance. This is not a suitable and good method as situations may
occur wherein the machinery is required in an emergency. The only
advantage of this system is that the working of machinery parts is used
to its full life or until it break. This system might get costly as during
breakdown several other parts may also get damaged.

3) Condition Maintenance system

In this system the machinery parts are checked regularly. With the help
of sensors etc. the condition of the machinery is accessed regularly and
the maintenance is done accordingly. This system requires experience
and knowledge as wrong interpretation may damage the machinery and
lead to costly repairs which may not be acceptable by the company.

Four general types of maintenance philosophies can be

identified: corrective, preventive, risk-based, and
condition-based maintenance.

Corrective Maintenance: Corrective maintenance (or run-to-failure,

breakdown or reactive maintenance) It is described as non planned and
taking place once a failure is detected. It's the action performed because
of failure or deficiencies occurring; or more generally, to repair an item
to its operating condition.

Preventive Maintenance: Preventive maintenance includes regular

inspection, cleaning, lubrication, reassembly according to the equipment
maintenance schedule, and conditional analysis to keep equipment in
good working order and prevent further damage

Risk based Maintenance: is maintenance that addresses risk-

sensitive systems and machinery. This type of maintenance determines
the most economical way to distribute resources, in order to repair a
system or minimize risk
Condition Based Maintenance: Condition-based monitoring has
its own share of drawbacks and benefits. Because a maintenance
program based on condition monitoring doesn’t require advanced
planning, there’s little opportunity to prepare for possible defects early
on.

What are the factors to consider when planning a

maintenance system of shipboard machineries?

-Maintenance plan is an imperative element of ship’s routine operations

and also forms an integral component of ship’s maintenance mechanism.
While making a maintenance plan, several aspects are taken into
consideration, starting from the International safety management code
(ISM) to the guidelines put forth by the machine manufacturers. As
mentioned before, the main objective of a maintenance plan is to make
sure that the work is done in the least possible time with utmost
efficiency and at optimum cost.
In order to carry out a successful maintenance plan,
the following steps are considered in order to form a
strategic approach:
1. Identifying the problem
2. Establishing the clause
3. Proposing solution
4. Evaluating solution
5. Implementing solution
6. Evaluating effectiveness
7. Solving
While developing a maintenance procedure for a particular ship, the
shipping company takes the following points into consideration:
 Maintenance guidelines and specifications given by the
manufacturer
 History of equipment including failures, defects, damagers, and
remedial action
 Guidelines mentioned in the ISM code
 Age of the ship
 Third party inspections
 Consequences of failure of equipment on safe operation of the ship
 Critical equipment and systems
 Intervals of maintenance

Considering the above mentioned points, a systematic approach to

maintenance is made. This is necessary to ensure that nothing is missed
while carrying out the maintenance procedure.
Following steps are included in the approach for maintenance
procedure:

 Establishment of maintenance intervals

 Methods and frequency of inspections
 Specification of the type of inspection
 Type of measuring equipment to be used
 Establishment of appropriate acceptance criteria
 Assignment of responsibility for inspection activities to
appropriately qualified personnel
 Clear definition of reporting requirements and mechanisms

Planned Maintenance System

- A planned maintenance system allows shipowners and operators to

plan, perform and document vessel maintenance at intervals complying
with Class and manufacturer requirements. The objective is to ensure
safe and reliable vessel operations, including equipment, in addition to
compliance with all applicable regulations.

-An example of how planned maintenance works with preventive

maintenance tasks in the manufacturing industry is when equipment,
which we will call Machine A, naturally gets its oil level go below
normal every month. Planned maintenance can be performed monthly to
replenish the oil in Machine A to avoid machine failure
-The purpose of planned maintenance is to determine what work needs
to be completed and how it needs to be done. Planned maintenance starts
with a problem and identifies the materials, tools, and tasks necessary to
work on the problem.
Planned maintenance system for technical ship
management - ShipManager Technical

-Planned maintenance system on ships (PMS)

A planned maintenance system allows shipowners and operators to plan,
perform and document vessel maintenance at intervals complying with
Class and manufacturer requirements. The objective is to ensure safe and
reliable vessel operations, including equipment, in addition to
compliance with all applicable regulations. There are different ways of
achieving this, depending on the size and complexity of the shipping
company and the types of vessels in operation. In all cases, a systematic
approach to maintenance is based on risk assessment and begins with the
establishment of a complete database of machinery, equipment and
fittings.

-A planned maintenance system on ships is mandatory

according to the International Safety Management Code (ISM). An
effective planned maintenance system not only helps meet safety and
environmental objectives laid out in the ISM Code, it is also an
investment in the protection of the assets and optimization of their
management.
-Technical ship management system
ShipManager Technical is the technical ship management system for
both planned and unplanned maintenance, defect reporting and technical
asset and data management. A planned maintenance system streamlines
the planning, documentation and implementation of maintenance work
and surveys onboard ship.

-ShipManager is offered for all vessels independent of

Class. The Planned Maintenance System is type approved
by DNV.
Modularized fleet management system for ships
ShipManager is comprised of individual modules or a complete ship
management system that will cover the full range of ship management
needs. ShipManager Technical is normally combined with other
modules, for example shipping procurement, ship safety management
system, crew management system, hull integrity management and
shipping data analytics (business intelligence). An integrated solution
provides the insight that is needed to gain efficiency, reduce Opex and
remain competitive in the maritime market.
