Assignment 1, Autumn 2023
1. Ten moles of an ideal gas with = 1.4 is compressed reversibly and adibatically from
100 kPa and 27oC to 1 MPa. Determine the work done on the gas, the change in the
internal energy and the final temperature of the gas.
2. An insulated and rigid container of 1 m3 volume contains helium at 20oC and 100 kPa
pressure. A paddle wheel is rotated inside the container raising the temperature of
helium to 60oC. Assume that helium obeys the relations PV = nRT and dU = CvdT
with Cv= 12.4717 kJ/kmol K. Determine the work done on helium and the final
pressure of helium.
3. A system comprises one mole of an ideal gas at 0 0C and 1 atm. The system is
subjected to the following processes, each of which is conducted reversibly:
4. At the start of compression in a Diesel engine air is at a pressure of 100 kPa and at a
temperature of 27oC. The air is compressed till the final volume is 1/16 of the original
volume. The compression process in the diesel engine can be expected to follow the
polytropic process, PV1.25 = constant. Determine: (a) the pressure and temperature of
the gas at the end of the compression; 9b) the work done on the gas; and (c) the energy
transfer as heat per mole of air.
5. A rigid and insulated tank of volume 2 m3 is divided into two equal compartments by
a partition. One compartment contains an ideal gas at 400 K and 3 MPa, while the
other compartment contains the same gas at 600 K and 1 MPa. The partition is
punctured and the gases are allowed to mix. Determine the entropy change of the gas.
The isobaric molar heat capacity of the gas is equal to (5/2) R.
6. Two Carnot engines, A and B, are connected in series between two thermal reservoirs
maintained at T1 and T2 . The engine A operates between the temperatures T1 and
T(T1 > 𝑇). The energy rejected by engine A is received by engine B. The engine B
rejects energy to the thermal reservoir, which is maintained at T2 (T2 < 𝑇).
Show that:
(a) Temperature T is the arithmetic mean of temperatures T1 and T2 , if the work
output of the two engines is the same.
(b) Temperature T is the geometric mean of temperatures T1 and T2 , if the two
engines have the same efficiency.
7. An inventor claims to have developed a cyclically working device which absorbs 500 kJ as
heat from a reservoir at 800 K and 300 kJ from a reservoir at 400 K, and rejects 100 kJ as heat
to a reservoir at 600 K and 50 kJ to a reservoir at 300 K, while it delivers 650 kJ work. Would
you agree with this claim? Justify your answer on thermodynamic grounds.
8. Calculate the adiabatic flame temperature when C2H4 gas is ignited at 289K with (i)
stoichiometric amount of oxygen, (ii) 50% excess oxygen
Given:
Heat of combustion of C2H4 at 298K is – 1411.3 kJ/mol of C2H4 (with gaseous reference state
of H2O at 298K)
cp , CO2 (g) = 26.76 + 42.26 ∗ 10−3 T J/mol. K
