CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Mental and emotional well-being is essential to overall health. Positive

mental health allows people to realize their full potential, cope with the stresses

of life, work productively, and make meaningful contributions to their

communities. Early childhood experiences have lasting, measurable

consequences later in life; therefore, fostering emotional well-being from the

earliest stages of life helps build a foundation for overall health and well-being.

Anxiety, mood (e.g., depression) and impulse control disorders are associated

with a higher probability of risk behaviors (e.g., tobacco, alcohol and other drug

use, risky sexual behavior), intimate partner and family violence, many other

chronic and acute conditions (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease,

HIV/STIs), and premature death.

The researchers will be conducting a study regarding the factors that

influence the depression of Grade 12 students at Baao National High School The

researchers will know how many Senior High School students experience

depression symptoms of depression are how to deal with depression, how to

deal with depression and how to prevent depression.

Symptoms of mental illness are plentiful; indeed, mental illness is far from

a silent illness that just its thing quietly in the background. Mental illness

symptoms feel loud, obstructive, disruptive, and emotionally and even physically

painful. Even before full blown symptoms of mental illness appear, there are

early warning signs of mental illness that either the person or others around the

person begin to notice. Mental disorders have signs that are observable by other

people, and they have symptoms that are experienced subjectively by the

individual. Knowing the symptoms of mental illness help people communicate

with a mental health care professional so he or she can work with you to

determine what is happening. (Peterson, T.2019).

Depression is one of the mental health issues that affects people of both

genders, all ages, and any background. People once believed that teens never

went through any form of severe depression. Depression can affect anyone,

anytime, and anywhere. Teens, children, and adults are all affected, some even

have the same problems in common, the causes too. Depression is experienced

mostly by teens even though it is mistakenly classified as an “Adult illness”

“Twenty percent of high school students are deeply unhappy or have some kind

of psychiatric problem.”

The causes for depression in teens are sometimes harsher than the

causes in adults. In a teen’s lifetime they have to face many problems and

sometimes they have to face these problems more than once. Teens have to

deal with peer pressure problems at school, problems at home, the deaths of

loved ones, and if they are already using drugs this could also be a cause. Many

teens also have to deal with the point in their life when they wonder if they are

attractive to other people, of the opposite sex. If they do believe that they are
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Region V
BAAO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
San Vicente, Baao, Camarines Sur
S/Y 2022-2023

unattractive they will most likely feel as though they have failed at something.

Then they will act as if they do not care anymore, then the uncaring attitude

increases until they no longer care about much at all. Depression also comes

after a teenager is trying to learn about himself or herself and understand their

body, and their emotions towards others. Sometimes these emotions have to

deal with homosexuality and finding out whether or not they like people of the

same gender.

Another cause of depression is said to be smoking, and that most

depressed teenagers who are in fact depressed have been smoking. “Teens who

smoked were at an increases risk of depression at a 73% higher rate than other

teens.” Sometimes teens may be depressed, and it will be easy for people to

notice, this is not always the case. In every teen’s life, at some point, they are on

a roller coaster ride, for this reason it is hard for anyone, even the parents, to

distinguish depression from just a plain bad day. Therefore, Invalid source

specified.it is important for parents to know what to look for, otherwise something

bad may happen. One sign to watch for is their grades in school, if you must, go

around and meet with the teachers to see how they are doing in classes and how

they are acting when you are not around. As some teens get depressed, they

sometimes begin not to care for their grades and may not try too hard to keep up

in classes.

Depression is common among adolescents, but many lack ready access

to mental health services. Integrated models of care of depression are needed,

along with evidence to support their use in regular practice. The authors

examined the effectiveness of an ongoing collaborative care program for

depressed adolescents embedded in a busy primary care practice. (Kibin 2021)

Whereas most of these factors arise in the earlier period of an individual.

For mental health and well-being, post-traumatic effects are the potential leading

cause of depression, and it can be influenced by a variety of factors in society. It

may come because of negligence. Previous studies have shown that these

problems are more likely to happen in areas with fewer opportunities and

facilities to live and contribute to society. On a large scale, people experience

horrible situations such as poverty, lack of awareness, and negligence towards

individual health and mental well-being (Moore et al.,2018) Moreover, respect

for individuals, could be affected the most by the interpersonal trauma resulting

due to unemployment, health problems, and relationship issues. While on the

other hand individual may suffer from violence, rape, and horrible events that

may affect the rest of their life if not assisted properly.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of this study to determine the factor that influence

well-being of Grade12 students in Baao National High School for the first

semester of academic year 2022-2023. We aimed to investigate whether metal

health was associated with attendance and engagement in trial of behavioral

weigh management programmers.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

The 1987 Philippine constitution states on article XIII section II that the

“state shall adopt an integrated and comprehensive approach to health

development which shall endeavor to make essential goods health and other

social services available to all the people of affordable of goods. There shall be

priority for the needs of the under - privilege, sick elderly, disabled, women, and

children. Just earlier house speaker Prospero Nograles and rep. Arthur pingo

jointly filed house bill that will substantiate a “National Mental Care Delivery

System” and the” Philippine council for mental health house bill 6679 aims to

address the increasing problem of the country on mental health and programs

regarding to mental health.

Mental health and Mental Well-being

Your mental health is an essential part of your overall well-being

comfortable, health and happy. It is more than the absence of mental ill-health

but is something that everybody experiences over their lifetime. The world health

organizing defines mental health as a “state of well-being in which every

individual realizes his or her own potential can lope with normal stresses of life,

and can work productively and fruitfully, and Is able to make a contribution to his

or her community “It is normal and natural to feel down at times. Problems you

may encounter might range from general everyday worries or low periods in your

life. To more serious long-term conditions. One in four of us will experience a

mental health difficulty in our lifetime. Everyone is difference and how we

respond to mental difficulties can vary from person to person. Well-being maybe

compromised when negative and painful emotions are extreme or very long

lasting and interfere with the person’s ability to function in daily life. For some

people it may be difficult to talk about mental health, but it can help to talk about

how you are feeling people you can talk to might include friends, family, councilor

a GP. (The Samaritans,2014).

Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity or apathy that

can affect a person’s thoughts, feeling, behavior and sense of well-being. It is a

very serious problem condition that occasionally leads to suicide or premature

death due to mental health problems. The annual prevalence of major depressive

disorder is 6.6% and the lifetime. Prevalence of depression is 16.2% an

estimated 6.6 million (one in a ten people) are affected by depression worldwide,

804,000 people committed suicide in 2012, making depression one of the leading

causes of death in young adults (as well) (15-29 years) second to road traffic

accidents. Person with major depression have a 40% greater chance of dying

prematurely. The economic problems of disorders on to all individuals as well as

society is both direct (e.g.. interment and outpatient treatment cost) and indirect

cost (e.g. lost productivity of the patient and their care Globally, $2.5-8.5 trillion in

lost output was attributed to mental, neurological and substance abuse disorder

[5]. These costs include direct cost of treatment as well as the direct costs related

to unemployment and lost productivity at workplace. (Al Qahtani A, Department

of Psychiatry, Imam Ablmam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal, September 11,2017).

Academic stressors refer to any academic demand (e.g. environmental, social, or

internal demands) that cause a student to adjust his or her behaviors, and

examination, performance competition, especially mastering much knowledge in

a short time, would lead to different degrees of academic pressure. Student’s

stressor has been typically grouped into three major categories; academic

pressure (Barker Et 2018, Karaman MA et al.2017), social and interpersonal

pressure (Cairo MJ et al 2017. Seigel DM et al 2018).and environmental

pressure (Campsie J at al. Metzger IW et al. 2017) separation from school

(representing social and interpersonal pressure) and fear of contagion

(representing environment pressure).

The entrance to the university marks a periods of transition for young

people through this transition students face new challenges such as making

independent decision about their lives and studies adjusting to the academic

demand of an ill-structured learning environment, and interacting in a diverse

range of new people in addition many student must often for the first time, leave

their homes and distance themselves from their support network (Clearly et al

2011).Indeed mental health and well-being are nebulous concepts and their

history and development are quite intricate with a multitude of perspectives and

contributions emerging from various disciplines and contexts (Conceptualization

of mental health, Mental illness and well-being) Therefore mapping research on

mental health and well-being in university student is essential to identify

contribution and challenge to the development of the field to help guide policy

research and practice towards areas domains, population and contexts that

should be further explored and for provide better care of students at higher

education institutions (Wavered et al 2017)

World health organization in the Philippines according to Cheridin P. Cro-

Joseph MD, EPAFP, FPCGM (2014) the study that they conducted in the

province of Rizal using the Geriatric depression scale (Short Form) showed a 6-6

percent rate of depression this prevalence among the elderly in the populated

province of the Philippines shows the depress can be present in health Filipino

communities. However, it is considerable to note that a fourth (26.5 percent of the

population has scores suggestive of depression this is a window for early

intervention in the community level. Depression has been found to be associated

with poorer progresses, longer recovery there's from illness and increased

health-care utilization. Screening the elderly population for possible depression

therefore is important to decrease health -care utilization and increase wellness

for this age. Group it is rescissory for primary care physicians geneticin and

caregivers identify symptom of depression in patients with scores suggestive of

depression to avoid the development of outright depression.

The social and mental health aspect of student welfare in tertiary level

instructions have gained more attention from stake holders of education in the

Philippines. News reports have revealed student involved in violent acts such

Synthesis of the State of the Art

All the mentioned related studies literature provides information including

key findings in terms of traditional knowledge that might effect of their mental

health condition.

There are also different types of mental health condition that students

experience in their lives. Specially the study focuses on their academic

performance and workload.

The survey has enabled us to build on the best evaluation practice

identified to develop a measure for assessing the mental health, social inclusion

and empowerment outcomes of arts participation for people with mental health

needs.

Research Gap

Despite the fact that our literature and studies focus on the mental health

condition. Our studies may appear to be comparable to the earlier studies.

Therefore, our new study focuses only on Grade 12 students at Baao National

High School.

Psychosocial (Social Learning Model). Researchers in this area study the

relationship between a people’ thoughts (Psychological) and their social

behavior. This includes the meaning a person gives to their psychological

processes. According to Bandore people learn through observation and modeling

of other people behavior behaviors (Mclead,2016).

Biological this medical model of treating mental disorders. The idea is that

something physical is the cause of the mental illness. Symptoms are “outward

signs of the inner physical order” (McLead,2018).

Cognitive Behavior therapy (CBT). focuses on assisting the person in

changing destructive thought and behaviors. It is a type of psychotherapy that

helps a client to quickly identify and manage problems. The approach is “gold

oriented and often involves homework. The homework helps to reinforce the in-

person sessions. It the golds standard in psychotherapy field” (David, Cristea,
