Mechanical engineering technology notes from the Technical University of Mombasa discuss engineering applications of friction. Friction is both desirable and undesirable in engineering applications. It can be static or dynamic, where static friction is greater than dynamic friction. The coefficient of friction is the ratio between the frictional force and normal force and depends on the relative roughness of the surfaces in contact. Angles such as the angle of friction are used to quantify frictional forces. Friction allows or prevents motion depending on whether forces exceed static or dynamic friction limits.
