Design of Slabs (14 Marks)
Q.1) All Questions are only TWO marks.

a) Define the aspect ratio in case of slab and state its importance.

ANS: The ratio of Ly/Lx is know as aspect ratio of the slab, where Ly is longer side and Lx is the
shorter side of the slab.

The importance of this is that, if the ratio of Ly/Lx is greater than 2, then the should be designed as a
one way slab and if the ratio is less than 2 it should be designed as a two way slab.

b) State any two difference between simply supported slab and cantilever slab.

ANS:

Floor finish = 0.5 kN/m2, support lintel = 230 x 300 mm concrete M20, Fe 415 steel, sketch the c/s of
chajja. Showing steel details.

d) Design a simply supported RC Slab for a Hall 3.8 m x 12 m clear dimensions is supported on wall
230 mm wide all around. The Slab is subjected to live load of 3 kN/m2 along with finishing load of 1
kN/m2 . Use M20 concrete mix and Fe415 steel grade. No checks are allowed for the design and use
modification factor equal to 1.4. Draw sketch of cross section showing reinforcement details along
shorter span only.

e) Calculate the reinforcement required for a RC slab panel of 6.3 m x 4.5 m is simply supported on
all four sides. It has to carry the live load of 4 kN/m2 including self-weight of slab. Use M25 concrete

details. Use Modification factor equal to 1.4 and bending moment coefficient are αx = 0.085 and αy
= 0.056.

f) Design a cantilever slab 2 m x 3 m effective in plan dimensions is fixed along 3 m slab edge. It is
loaded by superimposed load of 4 kN/m2 including its own weight of slab. Use modification factor as
1.4 and take M20 concrete mix and Fe415 steel. Sketch the cross section of the slab showing
reinforcement details. No Checks are required during design.

g) Design vaenadah slab supported along two longer edges having effective span of 2.5 m. Tale Live
Load = 4 kN/m2 , Floor Finish = 1 kN/m2 . Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Take M. F. = 1.4. Also
Sketch c/s of slab along longer Span Showing.

h) Design a simply supported slab panel of effective plan dimensions of 4.0 m x 6.0 m. the slab is
subjected to a live load of live load of 3.5 kN/m 2 and Floor finish as 1 kN/m 2 . Use M25 concrete
and Fe 500 steel. Assume M. F. = 1.6 and corners are free to lift up. Take αx = 0.104 and αy = 0.046
Sketch the structural details ( No checks required)
