Elements of a Story

READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM

-Is concerned with the reviewer’s reaction as an audience of a literary work.

-Claims that the reader’s role cannot be separated from the understanding of the work

-Criticism is focused on the message of the text.How do you feel after reading the story?What are the
lessons you learned from the story?

FEMENIST CRITICISM
-Focuses on how literature presents women as subjects of socio-political, psychological and economic
oppression

-Tends to reveal the patriarchal aspects of our culture

-Base on how men and women were presented

-Are the male character powerful or superior in their position while the female characters are
subordinate or inferior?Are the male characters decisive and the females are not?

MARXIST CRITICISM

-Concerned with the differences between economic classes

-Attempts to reveal that the ultimate source of people’s experiences is the socio-economic system

COMMON FORMAT

Introduction. Title or Name of the Subject. Author or Creator, Date Made, and other basic information
about the subject.

Body. (has 2 section)

A Summary – Explains what the subject is. It is a scholarly

about it? What are its good and bad points? Is the work significant? May use Critical Approaches –
formalism, feminism, Marxism and reader response

REACTION PAPER

-Presents your reasonable response toanything seen, heard, read, orexperiences

-Can be made by anyone.

-Focused on personal appreciation of the subject

-Is for expression of personal judgments.

REVIEW

-Always associated with the term paper or a book report

-Is an objective judgment of something

-Focused on highlighting the good or bad points.

-Gives audience an informed judgment about the subject.

-Made by knowledgeable people of a field

CRITIQUE

-Is the most academic and most elevated evaluation among the three.

-Is made by experts of the field

-Focused on analyzing and evaluating the components of the work

-Is usually made to provide direction for future improvement of the subject.

1.Description – Pure description of the object, piece of work, art, events etc.

a. Piece of Writing – What do you see? (form, structure, choice of words length, genre, etc.)

2.Analysis – Determining what the features suggest and deciding why the artist or writers used such
features to convey specific ideas.

b. Piece of Writing – How did the writer write it?

3. Interpretation – Establishing the broader context for this type of art.

a. Why did the artist/ writer create it and what does it mean?

4. Judgement – Judging a piece of work means giving it rank in relation to other works and of course
considering a very important aspect of the visual arts.
