BAKING TOOLS, UTENSILS AND EQUIPMENT IN


MAKING BREAD, COOKIES, MUFFINS
AND BISCUITS
Baking is a sophisticated method of cooking food. It requires special, tools and
equipment in order to bring out the best results.
To prepare for baking familiarize yourself with the following baking tools, utensils
and equipment classified according to their use.
LIQUID MEASURING CUP- a transparent
cup calibrated to indicate the amount of
input

DRY MEASURING CUP- is a set of marked


cups used to measure dry ingredients such as
flour and sugar. They are either made of
plastic, aluminum, or stainless steel.

MEASURING SPOONS-a set of spoons


used to measure small amounts of
ingredients.
DIETETIC SCALE- is an instrument used to
measure the weight of the items or
ingredients.

DOUGH CUTTER- a tool with a sharp edge


used to cut dough

FLOUR SIFTER- used in sifting course or


dry ingredients such as flour and sugar

ELECTRIC MIXER-a motor powered


device used to stir and blend mixtures used
in baking

GRATER- tool used to grate food into finer


form

MIXING BOWL- a hollow dish where


ingredients for baking are mixed
ROLLING PIN- a solid elongated wood with
handles at both ends that is used to flatten
dough or pastry

ROTARY EGG BEATER- a hand-held


device for beating eggs, cream, and other
liquids

RUBBER SCRAPER- a tool used, to mixing


and scraping mixture on the side of a bowl

SPATULA- a flat, thin and blunt metal used


for leveling-off dry ingredients and
spreading icing and frosting on cakes

WOODEN SPOON- a tool used for mixing


and stirring flour mixtures
OVEN- an equipment used for baking,
heating, or drying foods

BAKING PAN-an aluminum or tempered


glass dish, rectangular or square, round and
heart in form used for baking cakes

MUFFIN PAN- an aluminum rectangular or


square pan with hallow rounded

COOKIE OR BAKING SHEET-is a flat


aluminum sheet used for baking cookies

COOLING RACK (also known simply as a


wire rack) is used to allow air to circulate
freely to cool baked goods, and to prevent
them getting soggy from condensation
PASTRY BRUSH is a cooking utensil used
to spread butter, oil or glaze on food.
Traditional pastry brushes are made with
natural bristles or a plastic or
nylon fiber similar to a paint brush, while
modern kitchen brushes may have silicone
bristles.

CAKE TASTER- used to check the doneness


of cakes after baking. Typically, any utensil
that is thin-shafted will work, such as a pick,
slender knife, or a traditional cake
testing utensil.

COOKIE CUTTER-used for seasonal


occasions when well-known decorative
shapes are desired, or for large batches of
cookies where simplicity and uniformity are
required. Cookie cutters have also been used
for, among other uses, cutting and shaping
tea sandwiches.
BAKING SHEET-a sheet pan or baking tray
is a flat, rectangular metal pan used in an
oven. It is often used for baking bread rolls,
pastries and flat products such as cookies,
sheet cakes, Swiss rolls and pizzas.

PASTRY BLENDER - is a cooking utensil


used to mix a hard (solid) fat into flour in
order to make pastries. The tool is usually
made of narrow metal strips or wires
attached to a handle, and is used by pressing
down on the items to be mixed (known as
"cutting in").

DOUGHNUT PAN - is constructed similar


to a muffin tin except that the cups have a
rounded bottom and a stem that comes up in
the center of each cup to create the hole in
the doughnut. The pan helps produce a lower
calorie doughnut because they are baked
rather than fried in oil.

PIPING TIP-commonly referred to as a


decorating tip or frosting tip, this is the
nozzle that attaches to the end of the pastry
bag. Piping tips come in a variety of sizes
and shapes for different decorating purposes.

PASTRY BAG-also known as a piping bag,


frosting bag, or decorating bag, this product
is what holds the food that you’re piping.
Pastry bags come in a number of types and
materials, which are ideal for different tasks.
COUPLER- is a plastic insert that consists of
a base and a ring. It’s used to hold the piping
tip onto the end of your frosting bag.

FLOWER NAIL-a metal, nail-shaped device


that is used for piping roses and other
flowers.

PASTRY WHEEL-a pastry wheel is a device


to cut out rolled pastry. It consists of a
cutting wheel attached to a handle.
The wheel will have a straight, sharp edge.
The wheels come in different sizes.
