from the local newspapers to provide them with the latest news in current events.
Centuries later, in the 1890s, the radio would soon replace the newspaper as the most
trustworthy source for mass media. Families would gather around it to listen to their favorite radio
station programs and to hear the latest news regarding politics, social issues, and entertainment.
Several years later came the invention of television. This device would soon take the place of
the radio as the most effective platform to reach the general public. People could be informed
through the news as well as entertained by watching different kinds of programs such as soap
operas, sitcoms, talk shows and TV series. Today, 5________is the most relevant form of mass media

CUADERNO DE TRABAJO | INGLÉS 5

Read the text. Then complete the chart and answer the questions below.

Would we die if honey bees didn’t exist?

Honey bees don’t just give us honey and wax. A lot of food
we eat is directly or indirectly provided by bees too. Why is
that? Because they pollinate the fruit and vegetables that
we eat. They also pollinate the grasses and cereals that
cows, pigs, sheep and chickens eat, and that we then eat
ourselves.

But honey bees around the world are disappearing fast.

Pesticides, parasites, disease and loss of habitat are all
responsible. If there weren’t any honey bees, what would
we do without them? If they disappeared completely, would
we starve?

Well, if that ever happened, some other creatures could

help to fill in the gap. Other kinds of bees and some kinds of (21)

flies are good at pollinating a wide variety of plants and

flowers. Butterflies are quite good too, though not as good
as honey bees. And of course, there are always humans. We
could do it ourselves. But if we did it ourselves, it would take
a lot of time and it would cost a lot of money, making food
very expensive. So, while we probably wouldn’t starve if
honey bees disappeared, life would be a lot difficult. So, let’s
protect those bees as much as we can.

In pairs answer the questions.

ü What chores do you do?
ü How much time do you spend doing housework?

Read the text and answer the questions.

Men, Women, and Household Chores

After doing a survey, we came to the conclusion that men create more housework for women.
Although he may take out the trash, wash the car and make repairs here and there, a husband adds
seven hours per week to the load of chores conducted around the house. The information comes
via the analysis of time diaries and questionnaires from men and women from regions all across the
US between 2000 and 2010.
Of the people surveyed, single women in their twenties and thirties did the least amount of
housework, with approximately twelve hours per week. On the other hand, married women did the
most, about seventeen hours on average. These numbers are down significantly compared with past
surveys of similar characteristics. In 1985, for example, the same demographic of married women
spent twenty-six hours doing housework each week. It seems men help more now. Although there
was difference between households, the results of the survey showed the following: Marriage
means more work for women and less for men. In addition, the situation worsens when children
come on the scene. With three kids, the wives took on twenty-eight hours of chores per week, while
hubbies did only ten. There were some surprises, too. Older men were more likely than younger
men to help, even though surveys from thirty years ago showed that men contributed only six hours
per week to household chores. Women in their sixties and seventies still did the most amount of
work. Single women did the least amount, or about twelve hours each week.
So what does it all mean? Women have traditionally adopted more responsibility around the house,
and the sphere of work and careers has been relegated to men. Despite equal rights and better
career opportunities for women, traditional patterns remain taken for granted by both sexes.

Read the following text. Write T for True or F for False.

Natural Disasters
When something is natural, it comes from nature and it is not manmade. A disaster is
something that usually causes major problems. It would be a disaster if a bridge suddenly fell
because it was not built properly. Disasters are negative but can be manmade. However, when
speaking about natural disasters you can combine the two terms and define them as catastrophes
that occur in nature or by natural processes. They are not manmade. A natural disaster takes place
in populated areas of the world where lives may be lost, the property is severely damaged, and the
economy is negatively affected.
Natural disasters may include an asteroid collision with Earth, avalanche, landslide, blizzard,
thunderstorm, earthquake, flood, gamma-ray burst (from space), volcano, heat wave, hurricane,
solar flare, drought, tornado, tsunami, hail, and wildfire.
It is not a natural disaster if it occurs in an unpopulated area and there is no loss of life or
property damage. For example, if a tsunami took place on an uninhabited island, it would not be a
disaster. Disasters cause a loss. There are many things that can happen during a natural disaster.
Sometimes, more than one disaster occurs at the same time. Landslides may occur during severe
flooding and thunderstorms.
The most common types of natural disasters in the world are floods and storms.
All-natural disasters cause damage and destruction, and often one or more people die due
to the effects of the natural disaster. Many of the disasters can be predicted ahead of time with
some warnings given for people to prepare and move to safety.

CUADERNO DE TRABAJO | INGLÉS 5

C. Read the following text.

Writing a Résumé
A Résumé is an outline (description of the main facts) of a person’s educational and professional background.
In some countries, like the UK, it is known as a CV. 1_______________but remember the following two
principles:
§ Make it clear. Use direct, simple language, short headings and highlight the important things like the titles
of previous jobs.
§ Make it short, no more than two sides of a sheet of paper. 2_______________
Standard résumés are usually divided into a maximum of seven sections. One of the most common ways
to order the sections is like this:

1. Personal details. These are facts about you and how to contact you. The section should include your name,
address, date of birth 3_______________, and nationality. Some people attach a passport size photo, which
can help catch an employer’s interest. This is especially common in the USA and is becoming normal practice
in many international or sales-oriented business. 4_______________ so that employers can decide straight
away if they like the sound of the candidate or not.
2. Education. This should outline your educational background and your qualifications. There’s no need to give
details about primary or elementary school! If you left school some years ago and have done company or
professional training courses, it may be more important to highlight these. 5 _______________
3. Employment. This should include different jobs you have done. 6_______________ You should list the
main duties of each job as it may not be clear from the job title.
4. Skills. 7_______________, like computer skills or speaking another language.
5. 8_______________ These include sporting and leisure interests. Avoid obvious ones that most people share
like reading and watching TV.
6. Personal Profile. This section describes the kind of person you are and is usually written in complete
sentences. 9_______________ Don’t be modest and use phrases like ‘fairly good’ or ‘usually hard-working’.
Other applicants will write the best descriptions that they can, so you must too!
7. References. You should include two people who would be able to provide a reference. One should be your
last employer, if possible. 10_______________

D. Insert the following phrases to the text above. There are five extra sentences you are not
going to use.
A. Here you should list any other skills that employers might be interested in
B. The advantage of this is that the jobseeker’s achievements and qualities are presented right
at the start
C. A busy human resources manager with 20 résumés to read in half an hour won’t want to
read anything longer.
D. Other skills.
E. Try writing down ten words or phrases which describe your good points and then putting
them into a paragraph.
F. Don’t ask your references for their permission.
G. In this case, you can call this section ‘Education and training’.
H. Make sure you ask their permission first.
I. (not age, as this will have to be changed every year),
J. Holidays
K. There is no one correct way to construct a résumé,
L. Interests and hobbies.
M. Start with the most recent as this is usually the one where you had the most responsibility.

Ten Commonly Asked Interview Questions and Tips on How to Answer

When you start looking for a job, there are some steps you need to take before actually going to
a job interview. Once you have written you CV and cover letter it’s time to get ready for the job
interview! And there is no better way to prepare for a job interview than to practice. Here we
have ten commonly asked questions in a job interview and some tips on how to answer them to
make a good impression.

1. Tell me about yourself. TIP -Talk about a couple of your key achievements and the interviewer
will likely select an accomplishment and ask you to tell more about it.
2. What is your greatest strength? TIP - Figure out what your number one strength or skill is, then
talk briefly about it and provide a good example. Before going into an interview, write down
several of your top strengths and examples of each.
3. Can you describe a situation in your past where you learned from a mistake? TIP - The best
mistakes to share are those from which you learned something. Use your mistakes to show how
you have matured and grown.
4. What is the most difficult situation you have ever faced? TIP - Pick an example in which you
successfully resolved a tough situation. Tell your story briefly but try to reveal as many good
qualities as possible. Your interviewer wants to hear about your accomplishments and qualities
such as being decisive, creative and persuasive.
5. Is there anything you would like to improve about yourself? TIP - Pick a weakness (for example,
not being comfortable with public speaking), then show how you're working to improve it (being
part of a debating team). Your goal here is to provide a short answer that satisfies the interviewer.
6. What is the most important thing you are looking for in a job? TIP - Figure out what you want
most in a job. Talk about one or two items and explain why they are important to you.
7. What are your career goals? TIP - The interviewer likes to see if you are a person that plans
your future and if you might be someone that would meet the company's needs after you finish
school. Your task is to talk about the goals that you think the company can help you achieve
8. What motivates you? TIP - You can mention specific skills that you are motivated to use, such
as problem solving, decision-making, listening, writing, speaking, planning or counseling people.
9. Why would you like to work for us? TIP - This is a great opportunity to impress the interviewer
with what you know about their organization. Talk about the positives of their organization.
10. Why should I hire you? TIP - This is a great opportunity to sell you. Talk about your strengths
and how they fit the needs of the company.
