Hi, I’m Taylor of About.com and today I’ll be showing you how to complete a job application
form, any additional materials you may need and some tips on how to use proper handwriting. I’ll
be using the instructions from www.About.com’s job application site.
It’s very important that your application is correct, accurate and complete. Since you’re
going to be asked about your previous education and employment history, take the time to find out
any names, addresses, phone numbers, and dates of employment before 1 _________ the
application. Have at least three 2_____________ available. Make sure you have their permission
before using them as a reference. These people can be teachers, members of an organization you
volunteered for, or previous employers. Don’t use family members though.
Using blue or black ink, fill up your personal information like your name, 3____________
and phone number. When writing, leave enough space between each letter, so the words are easily
legible. Be conscious of how much space you are given, so don’t write too big or too small.
In the Education section, write down the most recent year of education first, include
vocational school and training programs, as well as 4___________ and high school. Write down your
major along with 5_____________ or diplomas and the graduation dates.
When filling out the 6____________ applied for information, write down the title of the job
you’re applying for. Fill out the hours and days you’re 7___________ to work. Keep in mind these
are the hours you’re available, not already committed to, to things such as school, extra-curricular
activities, or another job.
Using the information you gathered previously, fill out the employment history section,
include names, addresses, and phone numbers of previous employers, supervisor names, dates of
employment, and 8____________. If there was a reason you left or were asked to leave, include
that, too. Be honest, that’s what they’re looking for. 9____________ the information required for
your references; this is typically their name, address, and phone number. Before turning it in,
proofread for spelling and grammatical errors. Make sure all information is correct and sign your
application. And don’t forget to attach your 10_____________ if it was requested.

3. Collocations
A. Work with a partner. Read the text and answer the questions below.
What is a collocation?
A collocation is a pair or group of words that are often used together. These combinations sound
natural to native speakers, but students of English have to make a special effort to learn them
because they are often difficult to guess.
Some combinations just sound ‘wrong’ to native speakers of English. For example, the adjective
fast collocates with cars and food but not with a glance or a meal. Learning collocations is an
important part of learning the vocabulary of a language.
Some collocations are fixed, or very strong, for example, take a photo, where no word other than
take collocates with photo to give the same meaning. Some collocations are more open, where
different words may be used to give a similar meaning, for example, keep to / stick to the rules.
Here are some more examples of collocations.
• You must make an effort and study for your exams (NOT do an effort)
• Did you watch TV last night? (NOT look at TV)
• This car has a very powerful engine. It can do 200 km an hour. (NOT strong engine)
• There are some ancient monuments nearby. (NOT antique monuments)
Sometimes, a pair of words may not be wrong, and people will understand what is meant, but it
may not be the natural, normal collocation. If someone says I did a few mistakes, they will be
understood, but a fluent speaker of English would probably say I made a few mistakes.
Taken from: English Collocations In Use: Intermediate, McCarthy & O’Dell, Second Edition, 2017
B. Read the dialogs. Find and circle the collocations with GET.
1.
Jack: I think I said something wrong at the meeting today.
Mark: I’m sure of it! Even I got the message with the angry look the boss gave you.
2.
Lucy: Just give me five more minutes to get ready. I’ll be out in a second.
Ted: Sure! Take as long as you need, we still have time to catch the movie.
3.
Lucy: Hey Lily! What are your plans after graduation?
Lily: Well, first I want to get a job. Then, once I get started with that I want to start saving
money to buy a better car.
4.
Tom: Hey! You shouldn’t get worried, after all you did get permission from your dad to
be here, right?
Terry: That’s the thing, he doesn’t even know I’m here.

can use a dictionary.

A permanent job

Idioms are expressions whose meanings are different from the words that make them.
Understanding an idiom requires some other knowledge than knowing the words used. Idioms
normally cannot be modified or the words within them changed.
Example:
“I lost my head completely” as an idiom means 'I got very angry', NOT that literally you don’t
have your head anymore.
A. Work in pairs. Look at the examples. Match the idioms with their meaning.
• I thought she was as hard as nails when I met her. • I have mixed feelings about the film.

My name is John Croft. For almost thirty years, I worked as a taxi driver for
Downtown Taxi, the biggest cab company in Vancouver, Canada. I drove my
cab five days a week from 3:00 in the afternoon until around 11:30 or 12:00 at
night. I took a lot of businesspeople home after work. Vancouver is a big city,
and there were traffic jams every afternoon. Traffic was always the worst from
4:30 until about 6:00, but it didn’t bother me.

Most passengers were nice enough. I liked to show tourists our beautiful city. A lot of tourists from

interesting to see people dressed in their best clothes for parties. The most interesting customer I had
was a man dressed as a bird!
My cab was always clean, and I always tried to be friendly. I always helped people with their bags. The
trip to the airport was usually my highest fare. Most passengers tipped me 15% or 20%. Sometimes
they just said, “Keep the change.” My largest tip ever was $100. I liked my job and made a comfortable
living. I don’t drive a taxi anymore—I’m retired. I have lots of free time, but sometimes I miss meeting
new people.

1. Chasing the world 2. Ten tips for traveling 3. Work and travel interview questions
Katharina Parsons at the age of 30 quit her job and has traveled
around the world. She’s been to 50 different countries and has
knocked big adventures off her bucket list.
26
Q:
A: Definitely in summer because that’s usually when students have their summer break, and
the cities are crowded. For some people, it’s a disadvantage, but for me it’s a chance to
meet new people, to enjoy the hot weather and take advantage of the longer days.
Q:
A: I wouldn’t say I have been anywhere truly disappointing. However, I went to New Delhi, in
India, in 2016 and even though it’s a famous city, it’s pretty noisy and polluted. People are
impolite and it’s almost impossible to get a rickshaw (Indian taxi).
Q:
A: I’d absolutely say Italy. It’s a place where you can visit many ancient museums, see old
sculptures on the streets and admire famous paintings. Besides, the food is amazing. Don’t
forget to visit the Colosseum and take a lot of pictures
Q:
A: I think the most memorable experience I’ve ever had while on vacation was in Brussels.
According to my friend Lily who tasted different chocolate brands, “Neuhaus Chocolatier”
is the best place for chocolates. I wouldn’t agree more.
Read the interview again, then write the questions for each paragraph.
1. What’s your next travel destination?
2. What’s been your most memorable experience on a vacation?
3. What’s your favorite time of the year to travel?
4. Which is the worst place you’ve ever been?

Cozumel is a beautiful island in the Caribbean. It is a very popular place for people who like
the sun and tropical beaches. Cozumel is a small island but there are lots of different things
to do and see, like sailing or scuba diving. There are also beautiful beaches with crystal-clear
water, where most tourists spend their time. Unfortunately, it is a bit difficult to get around
the island because there aren’t many buses or taxis, but you can always get a motorcycle
and it’s quite cheap. I like Cozumel because it’s a beautiful, exciting place without the noise
of a busy city. I would really like to visit it again one day.
Write a description of one of the places below. Describe the place, the people, the food, the

I have never been on television, but I have been on the radio once. It was a show about life in the
military about twenty years ago. I met the Prime Minister on the same day. Actually, I’ ve met a lot
of famous people: members of the royal family, important politicians and also distinguished movie

7. Modern Technology
Discuss the following question with your partner:
What do you think about the statement “Technology makes our lives easier.”?
Read the text. What’s the main idea of each paragraph? Choose one of the options for each
paragraph and write the letter on the line.
Modern Technology
A. Modern technology is changing the way we live our lives. Clever gadgets make everyday activities easier and
enable people to use their time effectively. But what impact will this change have in the future and is it really a
positive thing? People are busier than ever before.
Technological advances mean that things are often possible with the touch of a button. A hundred years ago,
however, things were very different. Everyday jobs, like doing the laundry, would take a whole day, and the
telephone was a new invention! Nowadays, almost every household has a washing machine and a dishwasher,
and there are more than 70 million mobile phones in use in the United Kingdom alone.
B. Research shows that around 28% of children in the UK are overweight or obese. Some people are concerned
that this is because young people spend too much time online and not enough time socializing with their friends
and playing outside. In the past, nearly all children walked to school because their parents didn’t have a car. They
didn’t have all the luxuries that many children have now, so they used their imagination and played outdoors in
the fresh air.
C. Years ago, when people wanted to stay in touch with their friends and family, they wrote letters. These days,
however, E-mail communication and social networking sites, such as Facebook, allow instant, free international
communication.
D. Online banking and shopping make essential activities possible from the comfort of our own homes. But what
effect will this have on town centers and shops? In some towns and cities, many shops are now empty, and a lot
of people think this is because more and more people choose to use the Internet for shopping.
E. There are many benefits of using technology but we need to be responsible in the choices we make. Modern
equipment is often very expensive and does not last a long time. It is important to consider how much we really
need these things and the impact they have on our health, the environment and society.

CELEBRATION TIME!
Throughout the world people celebrate for many different reasons and at different times of the
year. Here are just a few examples of the reasons people have for celebrating.
First, let's go to Sweden where December 13th is the festival of St. Lucia. On this day the Swedes
traditionally have lussekatts, a kind of cake with raisins, for breakfast. It is also a tradition to light
candles in honor of St. Lucia. Also, in junior schools throughout the country, they choose one of
the girls to dress up and 1_____________________ to lead the St. Lucia Day procession.
Next is Hong Kong. The most important celebration of the year is, without a doubt, the
Chinese New Year. It usually takes place in February. It lasts for fifteen days and is a
time for families and friends to get together to eat, drink, and have fun. The main
reason for the celebration is to bring health, wealth, and happiness to the family for
the coming year. Just before the celebration begins, people 2__________________to
get rid of the previous year's bad luck. The highlight of the celebration is the street
parade led by a dancing dragon that contains up to fifty people.
The biggest celebration in Latin America , 3_____________________, takes place at
around the same time of year. The celebration lasts for three days. The biggest event
is the Samba School Parade in which about 50,000 people take part.
4
___________________and they dance along the grand parade avenue from seven
o'clock in the evening until the early hours of the morning.
Finally, we move to Vietnam where every autumn the Trung Thu Festival is held. The purpose of this
festival is to celebrate the beauty of the moon which looks bigger and brighter at this time than at
any other time of the year. Young people buy lanterns with candles which they light and take out
into the street at night. They also wear funny masks. 5_________________ represents the
brightness of the moon. Also, everyone eats Moon Cakes with specially prepared sweet fillings of
sugar and eggs.
