Routine Problems

Topic: Integers

1. In a game, each team receives 3 points for each correct answer and loses 1 point for each incorrect
answer. Kendrick's team answered 7 questions correctly and 4 questions incorrectly. What was the
team's final score?

Solution:

3 3 3 3 3 3 3 = 21 21 + (-4) = 17

1 1 1 1 =4

2. In the first half of a trivia game, Kenneth scored 500 points. Then, during the scored half, he lost 200
points. What was his total score?

Solution:

500 + (-200) = 300

3. Simon spent Php 1,000 on a fancy watch and deposited a Php 3,000 pay check. How much is change
that Simon had?

Solution:

-1,000 + 3,000 = 2,000

4. There were 56 birdhouses at school. Today, 4 classes made more birdhouses. Each class made 8
birdhouses. How many total birdhouses are there now?

Solution:

4 × 8 = 32

56 + 32 = 88(total birdhouses)
5. An airplane takes off and then climbs 2500 feet. After 20 minutes, the airplane descends 150 feet.
What is the airplane's current height?

Solution:

2500 + (-150) = 2350 feet

Non-routine Problems

1. A submarine hovers at 240 meters below sea level. If it descends (goes down) 160 meters and then
ascends (goes up) 390 meters, what is its new position?

Solution:

Step 1. Understand the plan

The final location of the submarine hovers.

Step 1. Determine the given in the problem

The locations are: 240m below sea level, 160m (descends), 390m (ascends)

Step 3. Determine the operation to be use

Addition

Step 5. Conduct the number sentence

N = (-240m) + (-160m) + (390m)

Step 6. Solve the problem

N = - 240 + (-160) = 400

N = -400 + 390 = -10

N = -10

2. Monica travels a lot. In one country that she visited, the temperature is around 23°C. The following
month she again travels to how many degrees celsus is the difference of the two temperature?

Solution:

Step 1. How many degrees celsus is the difference of the two temperature?

Step 2. The temperature on the first country was 23°C in the morning.

The temperature on the second country was 34°C in the afternoon.

Step 3. Subtraction
Step 4. (23°C) - (34°C) = N

Step 5. Let's solve: N = (23°C) - (34°C)

N = (23°C) + (34°C)

N= -11

3. The temperature in Baguio City was 12°C in the morning. It dropped to 8°C in the evening. What is the
difference between these temperature?

Solution:

1. What is asked?

The difference between the morning and evening temperature

2. What is the difference between the temperature of Baguio in the morning and evening?

To get the difference between the two temperatures, we need to subtract 8° from 12°.

12 - 8 = 4°C

4. Marine's hourly wage is Php.57.00 if she worked for a total of 48 hours a week, how much pay will she
receive?

Solution:

1. Understand

a. what is asked?

The pay she will receive for working for 48 hours

b. What are the given facts?

Marine's hourly wage is Php.57.00

2. Plan

Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence

3. Solve

It is given that Marine got Php.57.00 per hour and worked for 48 hours. So we have 57 × 48 = N

57 × 48 = 2,736

4. Check
2736 ÷ 48 = 57, therefore the answer is correct.

5. Jojo owes the sari-sari store Php.135.00 each of his 5 friends will help him pay off his debt. How much
will each friend equally share to pay his debt?

1. Understand

a. What is asked?

The amount each friends will equally share to pay Jojo's debt

b. What are the given facts?

Jojo's debt is Php.135.00. He has 5 friends who will equally share to pay his debt.

2. Plan

Strategy: Write a mathematical sentence

3. Solve

Since there are 5 0f Jojo's friend who will help him pay off his debt, we will divide hid Php.135.00 debt
by 5. So we have 135 ÷ 5 = N

135 ÷ 5 = 27

Therefore, each of Jojo's friend will pay Php.27.00

4. Check

27 × 5 = 135, therefore the answer is correct
