II. What You Need To Know

Our discussion will be divided into two parts:

1. Adding 2-3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 without
regrouping.
2. Adding 2-3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 with
regrouping.

First Part: Without Regrouping # Time - To- Think

Let us start by studying the problem

below.

Mother asked Ben and Berto to pick mangoes and sell it to the
market so that they can buy rice. The two boys immediately
followed their mother’s command. Ben picked 71 mangoes
while Berto picked 327 mangoes. How many mangoes did
Ben and Berto pick in all ?
If you were Ben or Berto, will you follow the command of your
mother ? Why? Why not?

Let us first understand the problem above:

1. Who asked Ben and Berto to pick mangoes?
2. What did mother asked Ben and Berto to do?

4. If you were Ben or Berto, will you follow your mother’s command?

Now, let us solve the problem.

and Berto is 398.

Let us study another set of numbers. First, add the numbers in the
ones place. Second, the numbers in the tens place. And third, the numbers
in the hundreds place.

Second Part: With Regrouping

Now, let us study on how to add numbers if there are regroupings
that will happen in any place.

1. If regrouping of numbers will happen in the ones place.

First, we will add 6 and 7, and the answer is 13. Since 13
is a two-digit number, then write 3 in the ones place and regroup 1
in the tens place. Next, add all the numbers in the tens place. And lastly,
add all the numbers in the hundreds place.

2. If regrouping of numbers will happen in the tens place.

What are the things we need to remember in adding 2-3 digit

numbers by 3-digit numbers with sums up to 1 000 without or with
regrouping?

1. First, add all the numbers in the ones place. Second, add the
numbers in the tens place. And third, add the numbers in the
hundreds place.

Example:
245 First : 5+2=7

 2. If the sum of the numbers in the ones place is 10 or more, the first
digit will be written in the ones place and the
second digit will be regrouped to the tens place.
