presenting the new lesson earthquake?
 What method is used by seismologist in locating the epicenter of
an earthquake?
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson After going through this lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. Define seismic waves scientifically.

2. Differentiate the different types of seismic waves.

3. Recognize the importance of seismic waves in the study of the
Earth’s interior.
4. Realize the relation of seismic waves to earthquakes

new skills #2
F. Developing mastery (Leads to Activity 1 Amazing Waves!
Formative Assessment 3)
G. Finding practical applications of
concepts and skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations and As an earthquake occurs, energy moves out in all directions from the focus. The
abstractions about the lesson energy that is released is carried by a vibration called seismic waves.
There are four (4) main types of seismic waves: P-waves and S-waves (which are
body waves), and Rayleigh and Love waves (which are surface waves).
P-Waves or Primary Waves
 P-Waves or primary waves travel faster than other seismic waves. It is
considered as the first signal from an earthquake to be felt. This may be
transmitted through gases, liquids and solids.
 S-Waves or Secondary waves
S-Waves or secondary waves are a type of elastic wave and are one of the two
main types of elastic body waves. It is also called as shear waves.
Types of Surface Waves
 Love Wave
- Love Wave is named after Augustus Edward Hough Love. It has a horizontal
motion that is transverse to the direction the wave
- is travelling and is considered to be the fastest surface wave and moves the
ground from side to side.
 Rayleigh Wave
- Rayleigh Waves move in an elliptical motion, producing both vertical and
horizontal motions. This moves the ground up and down and side to side in the
same direction that the wave is moving. It is named after Lord Rayleigh (John
William Strutt).

I. Evaluating learning  What are seismic waves?

 What are the 2 main types of waves?
 What is the difference between surface and body waves?
 How important is learning about seismic waves to seismologist and to
people?

School Grade Level 7

Teacher Learning Area Science
Time & Dates Quarter 4

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
the different phenomena that occur in the atmosphere
B. Performance Standards The learners shall be able to:
analyze the advantage of the location of the Philippines in relation to the climate,
weather, and seasons
C. Learning Competencies / Objectives. The learners should be able to…

V. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or In our previous lesson about conservation of natural resources, why
presenting the new lesson is it important to utilize renewable energy resources than non-
renewable resources?
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson 1. Describe the different layers of the atmosphere;

2. Tell the characteristics of each layer of the atmosphere

3. Appreciate the existence and importance of the atmosphere

C. Presenting examples/ instances of the Name the following images shown:
new lesson Satellite, Meteor, clouds, rocket, aurora
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing Layers of the atmosphere and its respective characteristics

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #2
F. Developing mastery (Leads to Activity: Put Me on the Layer!
Formative Assessment 3)
Activity: Superheroes Save the Day!
G. Finding practical applications of
concepts and skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations and Earth's atmosphere has a series of layers, each with its own specific traits. Moving
abstractions about the lesson upward from ground level, these layers are named the troposphere, stratosphere,
mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. The exosphere gradually fades away
into the realm of interplanetary space. The atmosphere’s division of layers depends
on how temperature changes with height. More than three quarters of Earth’s
atmosphere is made up of nitrogen while one fifth is oxygen. The remaining 1% is a
mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and ozone. These gases not only produce
important weather features such as cloud and rain, but also have considerable
influence on the overall climate of thebEarth, through the greenhouse effect and
global warming.
I. Evaluating learning • What are the five layers?
• Describe each layer
• In which layer is temperature increasing with increasing altitude?
• In which layer is temperature decreasing with increasing altitude?
• What is the relationship between temperature and height in the
- troposphere?
- stratosphere?
- mesosphere?
- thermosphere?
- exosphere?
