Hence, General William Booth, founder of the Army, called upon Salvationists to give sacrifcially and to deny themselves in support of the Army's work worldwide. Officer of the Army, Commissioner John Carleton, was deeply motivated and thought of saving fifty shillings for a year by going without raisin pudding after each dinner in order to support the Army's overseas work. General William Booth approved of his suggestion, but considering it was a bit harsh for someone to give up on their daily pleasures for a whole year, so he altered the plan by making ita campaign held during only a certain period in a year and namedit the 'Self-Denial Appeal. In Cover Story, Maso Lee, with the help of the project of The Salvation Army Palliative Care in Residential Care Homes for the Elderly, helped his father Lee Foo to prepare for his end-of-life planning. The completion ofa life memory book before his father passed away not only completed his father's last wishes, but also helped Maso to get to know his father all over again. The father and son have built a stronger bond through the Project, leaving them with no regrets. Maso did not know much about his father's early life, and the chance of compiling a memory book together has helped him to learn more about his father. Beautiful memories were created and stay with Maso after the passing away of his father, whose virtues and teaching will always remain in his heart. Another story is about how The Salvation Army helps improve and nurture children's life. Having been serving the Mainland China for decades, the Army provides continued financial aids and support to projects to help improve the lives and growth of many children, to help them relieve their negative emotions and finish their studies. We have witnessed many students growing up, among which are students Xiaoyang and Xiaotao. Living in poverty, Xiaoyang received The Salvation Army sponsorship which enabled him to continue his studies, and he is now studying in the university. Xiaotao used to feel inferior about his family background. With the company of volunteer Uncle Long from the Army's project, he gradually opened up and remedied the relationship with his family. As love should go a long way and be passed on, our services focus on giving continuous love and care. We hope you will also feel the endless love from our services as you read these stories. In my father's last, days, we were able to spend quality time with him. And with his wishes fulfilled, he left with no regrets.’ Last year, Maso Lee lost his father Lee Foo to illness. Because of the blow he experienced at the time when his mother passed away suddenly, this time he chose to seek help from The Salvation Army ‘Palliative Care in Residential Care Homes for the Elderly’ Project, which allowed him to better know his father and his final wishes. The experience has minimised regrets for the whole family and brought them love and memories Hy ema fates 1 The Salvation Army ‘Palliative Care in Residential Care y’ project, Maso had been by the side of his father in hi both of therK10ig 190803 4 BE BL BE | Shnaae Hatt CBRE ES: SAO > MERE ISO FRALEBAS > RRB BIE © HDS > (PMT SQUAT PRESS SREB AAT 1B BIBSH SNE > Howat ARes GRA > BBN SMMAE POLHHSE > RMS Lisi REASHE) BISRBAS AUTH > LTRALEE NLA SER RieT MBI AD sth SHHRBR RS TAM EE) > DIETeRA SMAR ORS > BORESB © Carrying on the love Maso's mother Ngan-yu met Lee Foo in the residential care home at their late age. They were drawn to each other and later got married as they both had gone through colostomy and had been supporting each other. Maso admitted that at first he was not too familiar with his step-father, but their relationship built as he saw how Lee Foo took care of his mother during the last decade of her life. 'I did see his love for my mother, and I love him too." Old Mr. Lee's health went downhill after his wife passed away. As Maso needed to be on business travel from time to time, he looked for some arrangement that could bring more help to his father. The social worker of the care home introduced the palliative care project of The Salvation Army to Maso, and he joined the project after knowing that the project also helps elderly to complete the end-oflife planning with their families, including producing memory books and helping elderly to fulfil their wishes. father, and he towards others, his RSE heise SHREBSACAMT NSSMHET HRAE VAN PESNRB MATE T S75 o MBAS > A RITTER AR ATE BARAT > MaATREARHSE BERSAUE AHRAS TRO RABI SOBHRF RFR > PL APES H5lo4 RESERHT SRB CRERR ABO RMR RENE HE SY Ho SRAM HARAAS HAG Eel SOB > ARA-RARERZES > E PARE AR > Wea eA HRAML AA ¢ HRSA S > o2 ASHI > BARAT SHEL © SRE LBA —ERES FR MRL RAR > BH SEARERSKARK SAGAR = SAA SEBINTA Bk > BBR RARTA RRR BR > SSMU HA AIR SASRE EMRE EN EER RI AG waz BSW RCS MMOH AM BMA ° BHRRERASEHNR FATA GRRE ZA BEST et BUA © Knowing how to love in a timely way As a step-son, Maso did not know too much about the life of Lee Foo before he met his mother. He thanked for the opportunity of making a memory book together with old Mr. Lee, which allowed them to know more about each other. During the process, Maso was reminded to be mindful about the interaction with his father and was guided on how to better understand his father's needs, and Lee Foo had more communication not only with Maso but also with other family members. ‘There's no formal training on how to be children or parents. We are grateful to have the company and guidance of the project staff." Due to the pandemic situation, the visiting hours of the residential care home were restricted. Elderly had even less time to see their families, and every moment has become more precious than ever. Maso was very grateful to have the chance to visit his father one last time during the Mid-Autumn Festival last year, thanks to the arrangement of the Project. On that day, Maso brought his father some durians which was his favourite and, with the help of the care home staff, the two had an online reunion with other family members. The joy of old Mr. Lee that day has touched Maso's heart so much. To him, it was a wonderful experience and a happy memory for everyone in the family. With no regrets at the very end Maso also remembered the very last time he was with his father. That day, old Mr. Lee was sent to hospital urgently, and Maso rushed to the hospital when he knew the news. When his father regained consciousness, Maso showed him the wedding video clip of his daughter. Seeing the granddaughter has built her own family, Lee Foo passed away peacefully with no regret. From time to time, Maso goes through the life memory book and photos of his father. Maso misses his late father, and he will always remember, his kindness towards others, his virtues and his teaching, The love between the father and son does not vanish with the ending of life; it carries on and completes the lives of both of them. The Project applies CORE-UPHOLD Model, a programme created through the cooperation with Sau Po Centre on Ageing of HKU, to estimate elderly's needs. Old Mr. Lee was clear about the medical decision that he made, and the Project arranged related palliative care services for him according to his wishes. His condition was reviewed every month by a doctor. This saved him the trips to hospital and allowed him to stay in the care home which was more comfortable for him: Bobby added that, the idea of memory book for elderly allows them to look back on their lives in a more positive way, and family can gain a more vivid idea of the lives of the elderly. Also, family can have more time with each other as they compile the memory book, and together they create fond memories which they can always cherish. Palliative Care in Residential Care Homes for the Elderly Started in 2010, with the theme ‘complete life and complete love’, the Project was devoted to develop a palliative care service model that can be applied in residential care homes. The model provides elderly and their families with comprehensive end-oflife services from the aspects of mind, body, social contact and spirit, and includes supporting services such as early intervention, end-of-life care and ‘fulfilling your wishes’ services. The fourth phase of the Project has been commenced, which will focus on the continuous development of palliative care services for the local elderly. Unemployment and panic buying of anti-epidemic supplies have made matters worse for the grassroots citizens. Amid the pandemic, different sectors of society have never ceased to support us and share love with those in need. We sincerely thank all those who have generously supported The Salvation Army by donating various anti-epidemic supplies including RAT test kits and medicine, which has indeed brought the much needed support and warmth to the disadvantaged community. Since local schools resumed face-to-face lessons in end April, we have continued to urge the public to donate children's masks or RAT test kits to help lessen the family financial burden of our students. After giving birth to her two children, Wendy wanted to build a new and complete home for the three of them. However, she was baffled by the many issues her children encountered in their growth and development In 2017, Wendy joined the Peer Parent Counsellors Programme. Through her interaction with other parents, she realised the importance of listening and communication. She started thinking about her own strengths and weaknesses, and began to know how to communicate with her adolescent children by understanding their behaviours and emotions, and by listening to them. The cat in the above picture is the bridge to communication between Wendy and her children. They express their feelings through drawing cats, which in turn help promote a harmonious atmosphere in the family. The Peer Parent Counsellors Programme has been implemented for almost 20 years. It has trained nearly 2,000 peer parent counsellors who, through sharing of experience, have helped parents in need to enhance family harmony. During the pandemic, the Programme initiated the CARE Action (Connect, Action, shaRe, Engage) to give support, care and encouragement to parents in the community through verbal and written words as well as actions, sharing positive energy with them during the difficult time. We have already given him a lot of encouragement but he still doesn't respond much. And why wouldn't he learn to speak like how we teach him?’ Parents surely want their young children to talk more proactively, but apart from giving all sorts of direct encouragement, living space arrangement can also make a difference. Let us take the home of Ming, a three and a half years old, as an example. To his parents and grandparents, Ming is the apple of their eyes. That's why they have specially created a play corner in the living room for Ming with plenty of lovely and attractive toys. Next to the colourful playmat laid rows of Ming's favourite toy cars and robots. On the bottom shelf are the toys he plays most often, such as cooking toys and blocks. Books are placed on the middle shelf, and on the top shelf are family game sets, such as Chicken Drop and Whack-a-mole. The grownups of the family think Ming's favourite toys must be easy for him to reach, and it saves the trouble of taking out and returning the most-played toys to shelf every time. This way of organising the toys is no doubt convenient, but at the same time the child would become so ‘self-sufficient’ and focused in playing and switching between toys by himself that he would be hardly aware of the communication from the grownups. In Ming's case, instead of putting his favourite toys on the floor for him to pick up by himself, placing them on the topmost shelf where the boy can't reach can encourage him to ask the grownups to help him get the toys. Naturally he will have more motivation to communicate verbally or physically. Another example: if we put his favourite toys in a plastic storage boxes with lockable lid, even though this treasure box of toys is within his reach, the extra ‘barrier’ will increase his intention to communicate as he may need the grownups to help him open the box. At the same time, family game sets can be placed at the bottommost shelf to draw his interest to play, and he would need to express himself verbally or physically to invite the grownups to play with him by the time he wants to play those games. How would you reorganise Ming's play corner? One way to do it is to arrange the items on the three shelfs in reverse order, and to move his favourite toys from the floor into a transparent storage box with lockable lid. These arrangements are simple and easy to do With some small adjustments we can help enhance communication skill development of children in a natural way. uwnjo> # # |A LOVING HEART CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE RAF RERARRVABHS AOE: GEAHESRA AUR RAR StHABE > ERRMAROTES > fh RKLBTA RAS AM NED o WES eS hie SATA Bo REHM RRS AS » PABRI RDN AH Rh NBEO Bette © PEE RE BAIN) RAMS AHCAM 20 HB SAR > BETAS RSI HERA IAAT RES >» STA SERS PIE AE > RAPE TR BMWAMBAR ; BRBT hit HEP SAAC RB2L > BER SRMB AGATA? 8 Pune OIF ° NBS RAR) ES SHWE EFA MIG RA > RE IRE MERRAEL PAIRS > fE Bea TS Ac REBAR ARN RBES | me RA SENEIS —A TP RBIBREL EM © BABS BABA EER MERBRA BIZ BTR AL ‘{RRTTAG © tt 2 BAD » BISA # EB PRRASRRABA— BHSRER RANE PRS » 2021 5 ft YO BALA 8 Shs AT BG READ THEKERERRS SENSES 30007? RAH fea caer TARE > Children's health and happiness seem to be something we take for granted, However, because of family financial difficulties or other reasons, for some children in mainland China, their parents cannot be around them when they grow up. The children are dealing with overwhelming economic and emotional stress all by themselves. By providing sponsorship and conducting projects locally, The Salvation Army not only helps these children with their studies but also provides all kinds of activities and social visits to relieve their mental stress. The Army has been conducting poverty alleviation and education sponsorship projects in Longchuan County of Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province for almost 20 years. During all these years, thousands of students have been able to finish their studies. And make use of their knowledge to change their lives for the better and create their future with hope. Influenced by the Army, these children also learned to be grateful and pass on their passion and kindness to others in need. Xiaoyang is one of these students. Xiaoyang came from a very poor family in the cold, remote highland of Bangdong Village, Wangzishu Township of Longchuan County. His father was badly injured during a work accident and was hospitalised for over a month. The tuition fee for Xiaoyang and his little brother and the living expenses of his family came from their mother’s slender wages. Sometimes, they have to borrow from neighbours to live through the tough days. Xiaoyang has been a hard-working and straight-A student since primary school. During his high school years, he got a scholarship from the Army. In 2021, he entered his dream college, Yunnan Agricultural University. With the 3000-Yuan scholarship from the Army, he could pay his travel fees and the first few months’ living expense which helped him start his life in university much easier.lerseds gw am | B-BS Bat Bs Bh > St BAB DALE TIS TER RAD A EIS LR BBA SE MMMM > HAR + HOARHAA > BHR S MO HOSTED AE © NFR WES 12 > BLM BBE 8 RETA IARAY » MAAR AT SABA TMT > eb ee RGA Go RAE B tk REIT PRLBUUR A » ERHARA RARE AES BASE ATMGREAA AR UMASS > BR AIE R > hth ABBR 0 EBL SR > hie ATRES: Aah: thsas BAKE? Story of Uncle Long and Xiaotao Xiaotao is a 12-year-old boy studying in Secondary 1. His, dad was sent to prison when Xiaotao was 8 and his mum left the family as she couldn't face the harshness. Since then, Xiaotao was left alone with his grandparents. Despite the veteran pension and minimum social welfare support, his grandpa has to work here and there to pay the bills. Xiaotao has been an inferior boy since he was small, and as he grew older and hit puberty, he became more and more withdrawn. Xiaotao was so reluctant to hang out with Uncle Long at first, but as Long visited more and more, Xiaotao started to open up to him and even look forward to meeting him. At the same time, the Army conducted a prisoner visitation and support activity called 'Bring Hope to Reunion’, Xiaotao and his grandmother signed up right away. Xiaotao hadn't seen his dad for years and he couldn't even recall what his father looks like. On the special day of visit, Uncle Long gave Xiaotao and his grandma a ride to the jail Xiaotao prepared so many things that he wanted to share with his dad, but the second he saw his dad, he couldn't speak a word but cry, so were his father and grandma. The tears spoke for themselves. The Project also offers a training activity for guardians. Grandma joined these training sessions as well.
