Introduction to working stress method Limit state design: Concepts of limit state design, Characteristic
loads, Characteristic strength, Partial loads and Material Safety factors, Representative stress, Strain curves,
Assumptions in limit state design, Stress block parameters, Limiting moment of resistance. CO-2 Designing
of Beams (10 Lectures) Singly and doubly reinforced beams: Limit state analysis and design of singly
reinforced, doubly reinforced beams. Flanged sections: Limit state design of T and L beam sections. Shear,
torsion and bond: Limit state analysis and design of sections for shear and torsion, Concept of bond,
anchorage and development length, I.S Code provisions. Design examples in simply supported beams. CO-3
Designing of slabs and Columns (10 Lectures) Slabs: Design of one-way slabs, two-way slabs, Continuous
slabs using IS coefficients. Columns: Short and long columns Uni axial loads Uni - axial bending and bi-
axial bending I.S code provisions. CO-4 Designing of footings and Staircase (10 Lectures) Footings:
Footings: Different types of footings–Design of isolated, square, rectangular and circular footings Staircase:
Types of staircase. Limit state design of stairs spanning horizontally and doglegged stairs. Reinforcement

Course Rationale :The purpose of the course “Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures” is to impart
knowledge to the students on design of various structural elements subjecting to onsite practical loading
conditions which makes them applicable in civil engineering problems and able to identify the solutions.
Course Objectives :This course is planned to give exposure to analysis and Design of RC Structural
elements subjected to flexure, shear and torsion. The course focuses on understanding the behavior of
reinforced concrete components and systems. At the outset of the course, Learner will be able to do Practical
applications and computational projects using design tools with the help of software

In every course, student has to maintain a minimum of 85% attendance to be eligible for appearing in
Semester end examination of the course, for cases of medical issues and other unavoidable circumstances the
students will be condoned if their attendance is between 75% to 85% in every course, subjected to submission
of medical certificates, medical case file and other needful documental proof to the concerned departments

DETENTION POLICY :

In any course, a student has to maintain a minimum of 85% attendance and In-Semester Examinations to be
eligible for appearing to the Semester End Examination, failing to fulfill these conditions will deem such
student to have been detained in that course.
