Side and Rear Vision - Blind Spot Information System - Overview

Description and Operation

Monitoring the blind spot

Item Description
1 Yellow LED (light emitting diode) in the exterior mirror
2 Warning lamp in the IPC (instrument panel cluster)
The {Acronym.BLIS} ({Acronym.BLIS}) recognizes other moving vehicles on both the left-

hand side and the right-hand side of the vehicle and warns of them as soon as they are
located in the detection area of the system. The detection area is larger than the actual
blind spot. The detection range of the system starts at half a meter distance from the side
of the vehicle at the height of the exterior mirror, is 3 meters wide and extends approx. 5
meters behind the rear bumper. The system does not warn of infrastructure, stationary
vehicles and vehicles approaching from the other direction. It mostly - but not necessarily -
warns of vehicles that are being overtaken with a difference in speed (relative speed) of
more than 10 km/h. 'Vehicles' in terms of this system include commercial vehicles,
passenger vehicles and motorcycles.
The {Acronym.BLIS} module is mounted in a bracket. This is installed on the rear fender or
the rear bumper trim panel, behind the rear wheel area. The bracket is designed so that no
mechanical adjustments are necessary.
If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a yellow LED lights up in the corresponding
exterior mirror.

The LED outputs the following signals:

• Yellow LED permanently lit - system is active, vehicle detected in blind spot
• Yellow LED flashing – system is active, vehicle detected in blind spot and vehicle turn
signal is active on same side (Secondary Warning System)
• No LEDs lit – system is active, no vehicle detected in blind spot

NOTE: If imminent overtaking maneuvers are detected on both sides of the vehicle at the
same time, the LEDs in both mirrors will illuminate.

The following operating limitations may exist:

• Magnetic objects in the detection range may limit the function of the radar modules.
• The system only becomes active at driving speeds above 10 km/h.
• During operation with a trailer that meets the defined criteria, the system is switched off
(yellow warning lamp in the IPC lights up continuously).
• The system will be deactivated when reverse gear is engaged if the 'Cross traffic alert'
function is deactivated or 'P (Park)' is selected.

NOTE: If a radar sensor is obstructed or impaired or the surface of the module is covered
by mud, slush or snow, the system may switch off in rare cases. The yellow warning lamp
in the IPC then lights up and the warning message ‘Blind spot monitoring blocked’ is
displayed in the driver information system. The system remains deactivated until the
contamination/damage has been corrected, and subsequently a time of about 10 minutes

has elapsed and 2 to 3 vehicles have overtaken or have been overtaken. The restriction
can also occur through heavy rain. When the rain eases, 10 minutes must pass and 2-3
vehicles must have overtaken or have been overtaken. Alternatively, the restriction
message disappears during an ignition cycle.
Cross traffic alert
The 'Cross traffic alert' function has been added to the existing system.

The system can detect an approaching vehicle during the exiting maneuver and alerts
the driver to the possible hazard situation:
• With a warning tone
• With the warning lamp for {Acronym.BLIS}
• With a message in the IPC about the side the vehicle is approaching from

Cross traffic alert

cardiagn.com
Item Description
1 Warning tone
2 Message in the instrument panel cluster
3 Warning lamp for {Acronym.BLIS}
A Scanning range of parking sensors
B Scanning range of cross traffic alert
C Scanning range of cross traffic alert obstructed by obstacles
The system is activated by engaging reverse gear.
The system uses the same radar sensors as the {Acronym.BLIS}.
The system detects cross traffic, under optimum conditions, from a distance of max. 40
meters and up to a speed of 50 km/h.
Once the system detects an approaching vehicle, the driver is alerted to the possible hazard
situation using a warning tone, warning lamp for the {Acronym.BLIS} and message in the
instrument panel cluster about the side the vehicle is approaching from.
It is possible to disable the cross traffic alert function in the instrument panel cluster menu.
It cannot be disabled when using MyKey.
