This meal plan was created with an understanding that many people eat the same meal
numerous times within a week to avoid groceries expiring. This meal plan considers the cost of
groceries as well and includes budget-friendly meals. These meals are also simple and include
days with “fun” meals which is likely to occur when going out. This meal plan was designed to
be realistic so that it is easy to achieve.
Glucometer testing:

1. Gather equipment: alcohol swab, test strip, lancet, glucometer and tissue
2. Turn on glucometer
3. Insert test strip
4. Select a finger to test, change fingers each use to avoid bruising
5. Clean the side of the tip of finger, using an alcohol swap and allow to dry
6. Hold lancet to puncture area and press release button on device
7. If blood does not appear, massage or gently squeeze finger until blood appears
8. Wipe away first drop of blood with a tissue
9. Bring the glucometer with test strip to the blood
10. Test result will appear on screen of glucometer
11. Clean finger with a tissue
12. Dispose of testing strip using a tissue

Administering insulin:

1. Determine blood glucose levels


2. Gather supplies: insulin, syringe, needle, alcohol swabs and sharps container
3. Perform hand hygiene
4. Take cap off of insulin vial and clean with alcohol swab
5. draw air into needle equivalent to amount of insulin required
6. inject air into bottle and draw up required amount of insulin
7. retract needle from vial and recap using one-handed method to avoid contamination
8. tap out any air bubbles and recheck required dose
9. cleanse injection site with alcohol swab, allow to dry
10. using non dominant hand lightly pinch around the injection site using thumb and index
finger, using dominant hand insert the needle at a 90 degree angle quickly and firmly.
11. Slowly inject the medication and retract needle quickly
12. Place gauze over injection site
13. Dispose of injection needle
