ART APPRECIATION

Module 1

Learning Exercise 1.1

Can you consider Art as important in your life? If yes, how did it help and influence you
particularly during this COVID-19 pandemic?

-Our world today is facing a great health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives
in an instant. We are mandated to wear face masks every time we go out, and when we go out, we
must keep a social distance. Social gatherings are prohibited; online classes and working from home
are our new ways of connection and productivity. And also, aside from physical health being the most
concerned and affected at this time, mental health is also one of the problems faced by many of us.
Because maybe for some people, their lives have become uncertain due to this highly contagious
virus. And I was one of those people. When the pandemic started, my mental health went down. Thus,
art holds a very crucial role in my life and also in others'. Through art, we can express our feelings
that we can't express directly towards other people. Art kept me strong and accompanied me when I
felt I was alone. Every time I overthink and feel sad, I was just going to read some books to distract
my mind from thinking about negative thoughts. And listening to music satisfies my imaginations.
Appreciating art, especially novels and music, entertained and inspired me with their lessons. By
reading novels, I was inspired to write my own story. So, while I was quarantined, I watched some
YouTube videos about writing tips. I thought of so many story ideas and started writing, but it is not
yet finished. Doing that, I was motivated again and slowly regaining my mental health. Reading
novels and music always takes me to other dimensions and help me escape the harsh reality for a
while. Most importantly, art kept my sanity during those dark times of my life. Maybe it can't literally
comfort me, but by just simply appreciating it, it can relax my whole being.

Learning Exercise 1.2

Are you ready to test what you have learned? It’s simple. Just discuss and/or explain the
phrases below.

Art is universal because it is popular. Art is good because it is universal.

-Art is an aesthetic product of creative imagination that no one can resist. It reaches different
places and people, and they always enjoy it. It became popular since a lot of people patronized art,
and inspired many of them to create their own masterpieces. Thus, it became universal, even isolated
places have their own art that depicts their culture and way of living. Art touches so many lives; it
makes our lives colorful and not boring. It is good that art is universal so that beauty and creativity
spread all over the world. So, it can touch so many lives and inspire them to be artistic and expressive
through art. Also, to test their critical thinking in understanding art, and can create unity by
appreciating everyone's art.
Learning Exercises 1.3

1.Give an example of a simple object or art which can be classified as functional and indirectly
functional art. Explain how it changed/fused roles and cross boundaries.

- Chandelier is an example of the fusion of direct and indirect functional art. Chandelier
started from being a single light bulb that brightens our houses during night time. Because of the
creative mind of people, from being an ordinary light bulb it improved into a chandelier that contains
so many bulbs and has a variety of beautiful designs. Chandelier is not just used to provide light but
also used as a decoration to make the interior design of the house look more aesthetic. In this kind of
art, direct and indirect functions of art crossed boundaries and fused their purposes.

2. Enumerate five examples in each function or purpose of art.

Aesthetic Utilitarian Social Cultural

1. Landscape 1. Sala set 1. Festivals 1.Traditional clothes

2. Painting 2. Car 2. Movies 2.Traditional dances

3. Sculpture 3. Cooking pots 3. Dances 3. History books

4. Drawing 4. Vases 4. Music 4. Traditional music

5. Photography 5. Fashion Clothes 5. Literary works 5. Rituals

Learning Exercise 1.4

When do we say an art is representational or non-representational? Attach a work of art (with

the name of the artist and when was it made) and identify its classification of subject and what
kind of subject is depicted in the artwork. Discuss your answer clearly.
The “Spoliarium” was painted by Juan Luna in 1884. The painting depicts a representational
art because it is derived from a real event that happened during the Roman history that centered on the
bloody carnage brought by gladiatorial matches. Spoliarium was a basement of the Roman Colosseum
where the fallen and dying gladiators were thrown after a combat. The depiction of Roman cruelty
represents the violation of human rights and allegory of Spanish towards the Filipinos. History is the
kind of subject that the painting has since Roman history is a real event. The painting wants to
transmit the happenings during the Roman Empire and to unravel the cruelty of the Romans. And
Roman Empire was one of the largest in the history.

Learning Exercise 1.5

1. In what ways artists sever society? How about artisans?

- Artists sever the society by changing their opinions and creating different taste of people
when it comes to artworks. The artisans divide the society by their different needs and wants.

2. Explain your idea of the concept of imagination in art making. Then select one mode of
imagination and its importance in art making.

- Art is created out from imaginations. Artists have creative minds that can think of anything.
And these imaginations can turn out into a masterpiece. It inspires and motivates artist to create more
artworks since their minds are not running out of ideas. Every artist has unique and different
imaginations. It might be affected by their experiences. Imaginations will be useless if were not
transform into a real form. Emotional imagination has a vital role in art making because it brings
emotion to the audience through an artwork. Emotions is an important ingredient in producing a
masterpiece because through that, many people will relate and appreciate the art. People love artworks
that could touch their lives and it will be possible if there are emotions on them.
3. What is appropriation? In what way can artist appropriate his/her artwork without issues of
copyright or plagiarism of art?

- Appropriation in art refers to the practice of artists reusing or borrowing of an already

existing objects or images in their art with little transformation on it. It is not stealing, owning or
plagiarizing a particular work but just using the artwork in the artist’s raw context. In order to avoid
copyright issues in appropriating an artwork the artist should have a fair use. The purpose and
character of using the artwork, the nature of the used work, the amount and substantiality of the
portion of the original work used and the effect of the use upon the market for the original work, these
are the factors should be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use according to the
Copyright Act of 1976 in the United States. And it is better if the artist of the original work is aware
about the reusing of his/her own work so that everything will be all fine.

4. What is Art Making? What is the three stages involved in Art Production?

- Art making is the development of a concept, researching, experimentation, art exploration

and production of a potential work. There are three stages in Art production; these are Pre-Production
is the planning of everything that involves conceptualizing of the theme, Production is the actual
shooting or recording, this is the execution of all the plans, and Post-production is the creating of final
output involves editing, evaluation and critiquing of the production.

5. Engage yourself in a deep silence and imagine how a simple paper clip can be utilized in ways
other than its basic purpose, which is to clip and bind paper. Take a photo of your creation and
attach it in your answer sheet. Explain its new usage and functionality. Be creative and enjoy
the process.
- Aside from clipping and binding paper, paper clip can be also used as a phone stand. I never
imagined that paper clips can be used for another functionality but with creativity everything can have
many functionalities. I jut used my imagination to think of its new usage. I thought of the things that I
need and can be a great help to me and then I thought of making a phone stand since there were times
that I just use anything just to stand my phone when taking an online class. I just bind the paper clip
until it turned out like a phone stand. It is amazing that a simple paper clip can turn out another art and
can have new usage.
