Quantitative Analysis

Period 1

Cereal Superstars

Finding the top 10 kinds of cereal is challenging due to the sheer abundance of cereals in the world. With the help of this data

and criteria, it has been done but since there are only ten open positions there are some honorable mentions such as Frosted Flakes,

Froot Loops, and Trix. The cereals in the top 10 are big-name brands that most people currently have in their houses. The criteria

chosen are a mix of qualitative and quantitative variables. Start with the qualitative variables: Nostalgia, box appearance, taste, smell,

and cereal appeal. Now onto the quantitative variables: quantity, cost, annual sales, creation date, and nutrition. The difference

between quantitative and qualitative is that quantitative means statistics and numbers-based. While qualitative is opinion-based.

Everyone has their own opinion on what the best cereal, but these criteria can help settle that discussion this table works is by a

ranking scale for example since Frosted Mini-Wheats has 18 oz of cereal it has 10 points, however, since Cheerios has 8.9oz it only

receives 1 point. This ranking is on a 1–10-point scale with 10 being the highest while 1 is the lowest. After finishing all the point

breakdowns, it can be repaid from 10 being the worst cereal and 1 being the best.

Rice Krispies, Which was made in 1928 is an ongoing brand that still brings

annual sales of 136.7 million. Also, the nutritional value of 114 calories makes it a great

cereal to eat if trying to stay healthy, but on the other hand, it is one of the best cereals

to add ingredients to due to the simplicity of its design. Yet that's where the praise stops

in every other category. Rice Krispies falls short and lands itself at the bottom for box

appearance with 1 point and taste, quantity, and cereal appeal ended up acquiring two points. In consequence,

Rice Krispies received the tenth place in the rankings.

Lucky Charms, on this list, never had its spot due to the true mediocrity of this

cereal which led it to not receive any ranking higher than 7. To elaborate more on that

idea in the rankings Lucky Charms tied with 7’s in both annual sales and creation date,

4’s in nutrition, box appearance, taste, and cereal appeal, and 3’s quantity, cost, and

smell. However, the outlier among all the criteria was nostalgia, which received six

points. In the end, Lucky Charms was in ninth place

4

Fruity Pebbles, With the worst nutritional value, happens to have 330 calories,

but on the other hand, its highest ranking was in smell. This makes sense because the

creators of this cereal would strive to acquire that fruity scent for a cereal claiming the

title of Fruity Pebbles. In turn that would mean adding more ingredients which would

increase the number of calories. It is said Fruity Pebbles earned the eighth ranking.

Cheerios, the most well-known brand in the world, may not be one of the oldest

cereals but it does have the highest annual sales with 435.9M. Also, it is the healthiest

cereal on this list with 114 calories. Yet the downfall of Cheerios when it came to the
5

rankings was the box's appearance, taste, smell, and cereal appeal. They all scored below four points, which

landed them in seventh with 53 points tying with Cap’n Crunch, but the tie was broken by seeing who had five

points or higher in the rankings.

Cap’n Crunch is also known as the cheapest cereal with a price of 2.94. However, Cap’n Crunch may be

the third oldest cereal, yet it has the second worst annual sales. The reason is due to the low cost of Cap’n

Crunch, leaving it with annual sales of 112.2M. The lowest value Cap’n Crunch received was in cereal

appeal with 1 point. Because even after 60 years have passed the Captain Crunch logo is the same. Despite

all the setbacks, it still placed sixth.

Reese’s Puffs, the largest value they have is cereal appeal and smell. When it comes to smell Reese’s

has the most natural smell which is just peanut butter and chocolate. The lowest values received were in three

categories which were nostalgia, creation date, and cost. This is the newest cereal on this list with a creation
6

date of 1994 and the most expensive with a price of 3.44. This could explain why their annual sales are the third

to last because most parents did not grow up with this cereal; they are unsure if they are willing to spend money

on such an expensive cereal. But, finally leaving this in Fifth place

Frosted Mini-Wheats, this cereal gives the purchaser the most

bang for their buck because they have 18 oz of cereal in a regular-sized

box. But when it comes to children the box's appearance will draw them

in yet once their parent opens that box and the child can smell the

lackluster cereal it is doubtful, they will eat it once more. Nevertheless,

this cereal is still in the top 5 among annual sales with 241.9M.

However, one common misconception about this cereal is that it is

healthy. If we are talking about calories, it is the third worst. Yet Frosted Mini Wheats places fourth

place.
7

Cookie Crisp is a cereal that flies underneath most people's radar when searching for cereals to

buy. But it is quite the opposite when children are the ones looking because once they see the box's

appearance, they are always asking their parents if they could purchase it. However, because the price is

up in the three-dollar range, most parents would rather not buy a cereal that seems unhealthy. Yet

Cookie Crisp is not an unhealthy cereal by any means it only has 116 calories. However, due to that

misconception, the annual sales for cookie crisps are only in the 5.5M range. Which leaves cookie crisps

obtaining third place.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch, the two greatest categories it received were box appearance and smell. When it comes

to box appearance it’s in the creator's best judgment to make it look appealing to both children along with adults,

which they accomplished perfectly. Nevertheless, even though Cinnamon Toast did not win first in annual sales it

came in third at 344.3M. Then when it comes to the lowest value cinnamon toast crunch received was only on the

creation date. But aside from that, Cinnamon Toast Crunch came in second place.
8

Honey Bunches of Oats did not receive any top spots but it did take a handful of 9 spots starting off with cost,

annual sales, nostalgia, and cereal appearance, starting off with box appearance the box is trying to do too much so it is

too hard to understand so that were it fell short on this list. Also, when it comes to nutrition it is the second worst

cereal, which is surprising due to the box's healthy appearance, but it is quite the opposite with a total of 220 calories.

Even of that H.B.O.O narrowly acquired first from Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Nevertheless, every cereal on this list was

ranked equally and was given a fair chance.
