HOW THE PROS DO IT
The first article is an article based on a combination of explorative and descriptive approach. The
second article is based on hypothetico-deductive or empirical study (see box below for a brief
explanation of the three types).
Research:
Explorative : identifying variables, factors, structure, pattern, etc.
of a new hasn’t been researched phenomenon
Article : Story telling/Reporting type
Descriptive : describing the characteristics of the variables
Article : Reporting/description
Hypothesis (hypothetico-deductive): Finding new truth or theory
or thesis
Article : Argumentative
Let’s first look at the article entitled “Beyond strategic information systems: toward an IS capability”.
The first thing presented in every article after the title is the abstract. Abstract contains a brief summary
of the article, usually maximum 500 words in length. Because it is a summary of the article it contains
the background – and hence the broad area problem - , the objective of the research, the methodology,
and the conclusion and recommendation.
The broad problem area is : While “frameworks, methodologies, and tools have been developed to
support the objective of the SIS era (and the earlier era – author added comments), yet the
mechanism through which organizations achieve repeated and sustain value from IT has received
scant attention.”
The objective of the study is – in this case the objective and the methodology is elaborated together –
“drawing on resource-based theory – the methodology , author comment – this paper proposes a
perspective on the management of IT in organization that specifically consider how organizations can
continuously derive and leverage value through IT.”
The conclusion or the results of the study is : he proposes and develops “the concepts of IS capability” –
a new era of IT; “outlines its core components and illustrates its applications.” The detail components
and illustration of the application is presented in the text.

1. As much as possible list all the elements of the research process from the article (not from
the abstract).
(1) Pick one article from any international journal (you can get this from online journal – you
may use google search), identify and elaborate all the elements of a research process in the
selected article.
