ThermalConductivity

Measurement Experimen

Name of student :- Sara Ghazi Yahya

Aim of the experiment:-

The coef cient of thermal transfer describes the ef ciency of a
gas or liquid that transmits energy through its surface and thus
discharges energy from its surface. This depends on the speci c
heat, density and coef cient of thermal conductivity of the medium
to which heat is transmitted as well as the heat-eating body. Heat
transfer coef cients are calculated by assigning the temperature
difference between the two contact bodies.

Description of the apparatus Equipment :-

• Steam generator

• Steam chamber with hardware

for mounting sample • Ice block with cover

• Laboratory balance

• Vernier caliper

• Two containers
• Sample materials

Procedure
1_ Measure the thickness of the sample material, Record
your data as
2_ Mount the sample material onto the steam chamber
3_ Measure the diameter of the ice block, Record your
data as d1 in the .
4_ Place the ice on top of the sample as shown in
5_Let the ice sit for several minutes so it be ginsto
meltan dcomes infull contact with the sample.
6_Run steam into the steam chamber .Let the steam run
forseveral minutesuntil temperatures stabilize so that
the heat ow is steady. Place a container under the drain
spout of the steam chamber to collect the water that
escapes from the chamber.
7_ Collect the melting ice in the container (with the
steam running) for a measured time (3–7minutes).Record

this value as t in the Data Table 1 and Record the melting
ice mass value as
8- Remeasure the diameter of the ice block, Record
your data as d2.
9- Repeat the procedures for another sample material.
Record your data in the corresponding Data Table 3 and
4 respectively.

discussion :-
What increases thermal conductivity?

_2 Temperature effects. Thermal conductivity increases with

temperature. The insulating medium (the air or gas within the voids)
3
becomes more excited as its temperature is raised, and this
enhances convection within or between the voids, thus increasing
heat ow.

What is thermal conductivity measured in?

_Watts per meter Kelvin Thermal conductivity is a

property that describes a material's ability to conduct
heat. It is often denoted as k and has the SI units of.
W/m·K (Watts per meter Kelvin). Thermal conductivity is
a key parameter in measuring conductive heat transfer.

Is a high K value good?

_K-Value represents the thermal conductivity of a

material, and it measures its ability to conduct the heat.
So, the lower the K-value, the better the insulation is.

Why are there errors in measuring the value of k?

_Neglecting the state of the stable system and errors in

measurements.

How do I correct the thermal conductivity test errors?

_Use a lot of insulation. Try to achieve parallel heat flow

in a short sample. If this fails, shorten the sample and
lessen the temperature difference. Investigate how the
heat flow depends upon length and temperature
difference, and try to find an empirical formula which
models the heat losses, depending on the variables.
This should allow you to correct the ‘errors’ in your
predictions of heat flow.

Why is the value of k wrong in the experiment?

1. Neglecting his stady state condition

2. Error in calculating thickness
3. Cylinder weight error
4. Devices are not modern, i.e. subject to error
